For the first time since his 1980 release 80/81, guitarist Pat Metheny has recorded with a band that features tenor saxophone. Unity Band introduces a new Metheny ensemble with Chris Potter on sax and bass clarinet, longtime collaborator Antonio Sanchez on drums, and the up-and-coming Ben Williams on bass. The album features nine new Metheny compositions. Once he had assembled this stellar band, Metheny wrote a considerable amount of new material for them. Through rehearsals, they winnowed the music down to the nine tunes on the Unity Band album. "It's funny, I have heard so many guitar/tenor records that have been clearly influenced by that 80/81 sound, and yet I really wanted to try to take it to a different place this time, even though that record was certain to be a reference point along the way," Metheny says. "One of Antonio's specialties is this even eighth-note thing he does, and in a lot of ways that set a direction for the writing. But still, this is a group of musicians who can do just about anything."

Americana is the first album from Neil Young & Crazy Horse in nearly nine years. Crazy Horse is: Billy Talbot, Ralph Molina, Poncho Sampedro and Neil Young. As you'll see from the track-listing, Americana is collection of classic, American folk songs. In their day, some of these may have been referred to as "protest songs," "murder ballads," or campfire-type songs passed down with universal, relatable tales for everyman. Some of these compositions which, like "Tom Dooley" and "Oh Susannah," were written in the 1800s, while others, like "This Land Is Your Land" (utilizing the original, widely misinterpreted "deleted verses") and "Get A Job," are mid-20th-century folk classics. It's also interesting to note that "God Save The Queen," Britain's national anthem, also became the de facto national anthem of sorts before the establishment of The Union as we know it until we came to adopt our very own "The Star Spangled Banner," which has been recognized for use as early as 1889 and made our official national anthem in 1931. Each of these compositions is very much part of the fabric of our American heritage; the roots of what we think of as "Americana" in cultural terms, using songs as a way of passing along information and documenting our past. What ties these songs together is the fact that while they may represent an America that may no longer exist, the emotions and scenarios behind these songs still resonate with what's going on in the country today with equal, if not greater impact nearly 200 years later. The lyrics reflect the same concerns and are still remarkably meaningful to a society going through economic and cultural upheaval, especially during an election year. They are just as poignant and powerful today as the day they were written.

Storm Corrosion is the long-discussed and highly anticipated collaboration between two of the modern progressive rock scene's most innovative and multi-talented artists: Mikael Akerfeldt of Opeth and Porcupine Tree's Steven Wilson. The pair have been friends since the early '00s, when Wilson co-produced Opeth's revered 'Blackwater Park' album. Over the years, they'd often spoken of working on a project together, but it wasn't until recently that they managed to make something happen, when Mikael flew over to visit Steve in the UK and they ended up in Wilson's home studio throwing ideas around. Caetano Veloso and David Byrne/Live At Carnegie Hall ....CD $17.99
In the spring of 2004, Caetano Veloso curated a week of special concerts at New York's Carnegie Hall as one of its prestigious Perspectives artists. As part of the series, he invited his longtime friend and collaborator David Byrne (Talking Heads) to join him for an evening in Isaac Stern Auditorium. The concert was recorded for broadcast on NPR and now will be released by Nonesuch as Caetano Veloso and David Byrne: Live at Carnegie Hall on March 13, 2012. The singer/guitarists each performed an acoustic set of their own songs (including songs from Byrne's tenure with The Talking Heads), joined by cellist Jacques Morelenbaum and percussionist Mauro Refosco, and also performed together.

Nonesuch Records releases an album of works by Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki and composer/Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood. The artists' works were presented side-by-side in two concerts in September 2011, highlighting Penderecki's influence on younger composers, at the European Congress of Culture in Wroclaw. In its report on the Congress, which celebrated Poland's presidency of the European Union, London's Independent called Penderecki "Poland's godfather of the musical avant-garde" and Greenwood "the doyen of English art-pop," describing their concert as "rapturously received." The composers went to Krakow's Alvernia Studios immediately after the performances to oversee the recording of the same music, along with one other piece by Greenwood. The Wroclaw concert included two works by Penderecki dating from the early 1960s: Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima and Polymorphia (for 48 strings), the latter of which inspired the Greenwood piece on the program, 48 Responses to Polymorphia; all three are on the Nonesuch record. An additional piece by Greenwood, Popcorn Superhet Receiver, which was inspired by Penderecki's Threnody, also was recorded for the album. For both the concerts and the recording, the pieces were performed by the AUKSO ensemble, which comprises graduates of Poland's Katowice Academy of Music.
John Adams/Son Of Chamber Symphony & String Quartet ....CD $15.99
John Adams' Son of Chamber Symphony is performed by the International Contemporary Ensemble, led by the composer, and Adams' String Quartet is performed by the St. Lawrence String Quartet, the ensemble for which the piece was written. This is the first recording of both works. "As you might imagine, Son of Chamber Symphony is closely related to Chamber Symphony," Adams recently explained in an interview for the London Sinfonietta. "The two are very similar in instrumentation: 15 players-a large chamber group, or a very small orchestra-which means everybody gets to be a soloist in one way or another. It gave me an opportunity to do the kind of challenging virtuoso writing that I would never attempt with a large orchestra. The new chamber symphony also has the same buoyant quality [as the original]." The piece was co-commissioned by the San Francisco Ballet for a new work by choreographer Mark Morris, entitled Joyride, which premiered in 2008.

As a nod to the Guitar Shop album, the band solidly shreds on the masterful hard rocker Big Block, the dance hall vibe of Savoy and of course the power slide guitar balladry of the haunting Where Were You. Even more classics abound as Jeff Beck and Co. treat the listener to some of his most requested tunes from Blow By Blow and Wired like the crowd pleaser Freeway Jam, the intense and percussive interplay on Scatterbrain, the jazz classic Goodbye Pork Pie Hat. The show closes out with a chilling instrumental of The Beatles' A Day In The Life from Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, which has since become a staple and much requested tune from his fans. A poignant song for this September 10, 2003 occasion, as this full capacity New Yorker audience remembered all too soon the tragic events of 9/11. Some performers would have a difficult time to follow up after such an emotional and powerful performance, but a righteous new day is coming with Curtis Mayfield's classic People Get Ready as Jeff Beck reprises this hit single from the early eighties for his delighted fans.

As the song closes, Morrison can be heard chanting, "Mr. Mojo Risin'"--an anagram of his name that was made famous during the bridge of "L.A. Woman." Vol. 2, an essential continuation of the original that includes more than two hours of
unreleased performances from that storied tour. Grateful Dead archivist David
Lemieux, who produced this 20-track compilation, says he only chose song titles that did
not appear on Europe '72 as a way to complement the original. "I think this album,
coupled with Europe '72, represents a complete overview of the tour in every way," he
says. "In fact, songs like ‘Beat It On Down The Line,' ‘Next Time You See
Me' and ‘Sing Me Back Home' were selected by the Grateful Dead for the first set, but
were left off because there wasn't enough room." In a nod to the original, Vol.
2 features new cover art by Stanley Mouse, the artist who helped create the iconic artwork
from Europe '72, which features the return of the legendary Ice Cream Kid. "Trouble
comes in many flavors. Ice Cream Kid is in hot water. The jury is out. His only defense is
love," says Mouse of the Kid's return. Recorded at various locations during the
band's 22-show tour, the collection captures the Dead in white-hot moments of
improvisational revelry as the band explores a number of its most enduring songs, like
"Bertha," "Sugaree" and "Playing In the Band," plus
relatively obscure cuts like "Black-Throated Wind" and Pigpen's "Chinatown
Shuffle."
As a special treat, the set includes an epic hour-plus jam that combines "Dark
Star" and "The Other One." Recorded at the Bickershaw Festival, it was the
only show on this tour where the band broke out both of these beloved improvisational
showpieces. VOL. 2 also includes "Good Lovin'" and "Dire Wolf" from
the April 26 show at Jahrhundert Halle in Frankfurt, West Germany. While much of that
concert was released on 1995's Hundred Year Hall, these particular tracks were not
included and have remained unreleased until now. The high-quality sound heard on
Vol. 2 stems from painstaking work done by Jeffrey Norman, who has been the primary mixer
of the Dead's archival multi-track material for the past 15 years. For this release, he
mixed each show from the original 16-track recordings while two-time Grammy-winning
engineer David Glasser mastered the music to HDCD specs.

The Music of Vladimir Martynov includes three works written for Kronos by the leading Russian composer: The Beatitudes (1998, rescored for Kronos, 2006), Schubert-Quintet (Unfinished) (2009), and Der Abschied (2006). Kronos' artistic director and founder David Harrington says Martynov's music "straddles various points of musical history and time; the music seems to me to reflect and absorb humanity in such a beautiful way." Born in Moscow in 1946, Martynov was the son of a well-known musicologist and writer. He studied music from a young age and attended the Conservatory before expanding his musical pursuits beyond the traditional classical canon and into folk songs, early music, avant-garde, rock, and electronic music. In 1979, he entered the Spiritual Academy at the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, where he worked on preserving and restoring traditional Russian Orthodox chant. He returned to composition in the 1990s with a new style that combined the traditions of American minimalism with the repetitive chant of Russian Orthodoxy.

New York City's premier jazz venue got the blues last April when Wynton Marsalis and Eric Clapton performed together in Rose Theater at Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center for two sold-out shows dedicated to vintage blues. The extraordinary collaboration, billed as Wynton Marsalis & Eric Clapton Play the Blues, paired these musical virtuosos with members of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra as they brought to life a repertoire of songs selected by Clapton and arranged by Marsalis. The band nimbly navigated a diverse set list that touched on different styles, from the four-on-the-floor swing of Louis Armstrong's "Ice Cream" and the southern slow-drag of W.C. WTC 9/11 reflects on the World Trade Center attacks of September 11,
2001, when Reich and his family lived only four blocks away from the site of the tragedy.
"On 9/11 we were in Vermont, but our son, granddaughter, and daughter-in-law were all
in our apartment. Our phone connection stayed open for six hours and our next-door
neighbors were finally able to drive north out of the city with their family and ours. For
us, 9/11 was not a media event," the composer says. The piece is scored for
three string quartets; Kronos recorded all three parts for the album. WTC 9/11 also uses
pre-recorded voices, the speakers' final vowels and consonants elongated in a stop-motion
sound technique that Reich says is the "means of connecting one person to
another-harmonically." Those voices and their texts belong to NORAD air traffic
controllers, as they raised the alert that the airplanes were off course; FDNY workers on
the scene; friends and former neighbors of the Reichs, recalling that day; and women who
kept vigil, or Shmira, over the dead in a tent outside the Medical Examiner's office,
reading Psalms or Biblical passages. The relationship between Steve Reich and Kronos
Quartet spans more than 20 years. This is the third quartet the composer has written for
Kronos; all three have been recorded by Nonesuch.
Mallet Quartet (2009), co-commissioned and performed by SA Percussion on
both the CD and the DVD, is scored for two vibraphones and two five-octave marimbas. The
New York Times said of a recent Carnegie Hall performance: "SA Percussion's energetic
account...pointed up one of Mr. Reich's current modes of propulsion: a two-tiered approach
in which the rhythmically repetitive backdrop that listeners hear as Minimalist (and as
the music's distinctively Reichian signature) is offset by restless, melodically
adventurous top lines. There were other contrasts here: the repeating figures, for
marimbas, were dark and subdued, with a warm, wooden tone; the themes, played on
vibraphones, were cool, bright and lively." Dance Patterns
(2002) is Reich's contribution to Thierry de Mey's film Counterphrases of Anne Terese de
Keersmaeker's Choreography, for which several composers wrote short pieces. While the film
was shown, the music was performed live by the Ictus Ensemble, which commissioned all the
music. Scored for vibraphones, xylophones, and pianos, Dance Patterns features members of
Steve Reich and Musicians on the Nonesuch recording.
