Mahogany Rush got together in 1970, featuring Marino on lead guitar, backed by Paul Harwood (bass) and Jim Ayoub (drums). Their big break came when they played at a pop festival during the 1971 Montreal Expo. This led to a record contract and the release of this debut album in 1972. 'Maxoom' was recorded in a Quebec studio with the 16 year old Marino delving into psychedelic blues and utilising wah wah effects to the max. This was their third studio album, first released in 1966 and packed with blues standards recorded in the States with top producer Tom Wilson. Originally a six-piece student outfit from Cologne, the group was formed in 1968 and released its first album 'Birth Control' in 1970. They started out playing in a jazz-rock style influenced by such British organists as Brian Auger, and were famed for their extended arrangements - as featured on 'Gamma Ray,' here among the five tracks on this excellent 'live' set. Here is a welcome slice of pop history that showcases the work of excellent British vocalist and band leader Neil Christian. His group The Crusaders took up the sword way back in 1960, and after many years of struggle were rewarded when the single 'That's Nice' became a Number 14 UK chart hit in 1966. It was also highly successful in Germany. This 30 track definitive CD anthology covers the Christian era from 1962 to 1969. Among the A and B-sides and EP tracks are several boasting outstanding guitar work from Jimmy Page, who joined the Crusaders as a teenager. (Page plays a storming solo on the 1966 B-side 'I Like It' and is also heard on the Joe Meek produced 'Get A Load Of This' from 1963). The Crusaders boasted several other great guitarists during their heyday, notably Ritchie Blackmore and Mick Abrahams. The set also includes two rare tracks with German lyrics. This all adds to the fascination among fans for the work of a pioneering beat group and its unfailingly nice young singer.

'Heavy Petting' is the second album by Dr.Strangely Strange, the experimental Irish folk group beloved of the late broadcaster John Peel. Although a short-lived outfit, the good Doctor has been favourably compared to The Incredible String Band and their work has achieved cult status among record collectors. Formed in Dublin in 1967, the original group comprised Tim Booth (vocals, guitar), Ivan Pawle (bass and keyboards) and singer Tim Goulding. They augmented the line up with guest musicians for this album, including 16-year-old Gary Moore, later to achieve fame with Thin Lizzy. Gary's fluent guitar provides some of the best moments on this diverse and entertaining set of original songs, beefed up by drummer Dave Mattacks. Joe Boyd, the young American based in London, produced 'Heavy Petting.' which was first released on the Vertigo label in 1970. The album has eleven tracks, including such quirky songs, such as 'Ballad Of Wasps,' 'Summer Breeze,' and 'I Gave My Love An Apple.' There are hymns and laments, country jigs and boogie riffs - all played with lively enthusiasm and innocent charm. 'Kilmanoyadd Stomp' has Ivan Pawle playing harmonium, while Goulding plays the recorder, which adds to the traditional flavour. This CD provides a fascinating insight into the development of Irish rock and folk music in the early Seventies. One of the first American Prog Rock outfits, Dust was formed in New York in 1968. Originally a group of teenagers specialising in covering songs by The Who and Rolling Stones, Dust evolved into a more mature experimental band that released this highly collectable album in 1971. Gravy Train was a Lancashire based progressive rock outfit, noted for its top class musicianship and songwriting skills. Jade Warrior was one of the most intriguing and musically gifted bands signed to the progressive Vertigo label in the early Seventies. Love Affair hit the charts in 1968 with 'Everlasting Love.' Yet, by their time second album 'New Day' was released in 1970, the group had undergone drastic change. When The Yardbirds broke up in 1968, the surviving members were determined to take a fresh look at their musical aims and ambitions. A uniquely talented British heavy rock band, Rumplestiltskin was the brainchild of American producer Shel Talmy. It was his idea to form a 'supergroup' that might rival the highly successful outfits that dominated the early Seventies, such as Status Quo and Led Zeppelin. Instead of picking young, untried rockers, Talmy brought together highly experienced professional session men. Among them was drummer Clem Cattini, who recalls the evolution of the group in a special interview for the informative liner notes. Although 'Rumplestiltskin' wasn't a hit, it was nevertheless a serious project, as can be heard on the eight powerful tracks on this CD re-issue of a classy album, first released in 1970. The band also featured singer Peter Lee Stirling, who later scored a hit single with 'Beautiful Sunday' under the name of Daniel Boone.

A kind of maniac intensity pervades the powerhouse performances on this blues drenched CD. Much of the excitement is due to the presence of a 17-year old lead guitarist and singer, who would go on to fame and fortune. However, this is not the U.S. Skid Row (the one starring singer Sebastian Bach that came to prominence in the early 1990s). This dynamic trio came storming out of Belfast in 1970 and showcased the talents of none other than future guitar hero Gary Moore. Gary was clearly out to prove himself the equal of his favourite guitarists such as Eric Clapton and Peter Green. He certainly reveals a talent for speed and energy on such numbers as 'Mad Dog Woman' and 'An Awful Lot Of Woman.' Clever, intricate arrangements ensure the drums and bass are given as much work to do, while Gary skids into the crash barriers at 100 miles-an-hour. Historically and musically, this is a gem of an album that bridges 60s blues and 70s hard rock.

Spirit was one of the most exciting young American bands to enliven the late Sixties' rock scene. The exultant playing of teenaged lead guitarist and former Hendrix protege Randy California sparked a group that was also powered up by the drumming of Randy's stepfather Ed 'Mr.Skin' Cassidy. It was a fascinating set up that aroused much public interest at the time and was celebrated by the title of their second album, 'The Family That Plays Together.' First released in 1969, it proved hugely popular around the world, particularly in Germany and England. The album also spawned their debut hit single 'I Got A Line On You.' Spirit reached a creative peak with a concept work that many saw as Spirit's very own 'Sgt.Pepper.' The original LP's 12 tracks were produced by David Briggs, best known for his work with Alice Cooper and Neil Young, and range in mood from soulful ballads to rockin' ravers. When Progressive Rock ruled in the early Seventies, it was a challenging period for new talent. As well as top acts like King Crimson, Genesis and Yes, a new wave of ambitious young groups were determined to experiment and play excitingly fresh music. Among them was Spring, from Leicester, England. They were a band that featured first class musicians, encouraged by the top names of the record industry. Spring's only album - now regarded as a Prog Rock masterpiece - was produced by Gus Dudgeon and engineered by Kingsley Ward, the founder of Rockfield Studios, who had discovered the band. 'Spring' features the vocals of Pat Moran and the lead guitar work of Ray Martinez, who later found fame with Showaddywaddy. Their drummer Pick Withers went on to work with Dire Straits. These eight tracks from the original LP, including ballads and rockers, are distinguished by the use of the Mellotron, which adds an eerie flavour to their sound. Hammering out the blues with locomotive power, Steamhammer was one of the best British groups of the late '60s. A hugely popular touring outfit they featured lead guitarist Martin Pugh, who is showcased on 'Speech' which proved to be the band's final album after its original release in 1972. The band was moving towards a more progressive rock style by the time they recorded 'Speech' and had undergone a few changes of personnel. Among the final recruits was bass guitarist Louis Cennamo who gives his personal memories of the final period in the band's career in an interview for the CD liner notes. This three-track album includes the extended work 'Penumbra' and is sparked by the drumming of Mick Bradley who passed away shortly afterwards and whose early death contributed to the break up of a fondly remembered group.
