Sonar & David Torn/Vortex ....CD $15.99

Produced by David Torn - and featuring the legendary guitarist on all its tracks - Sonar's fourth release Vortex is the Swiss band's first on the RareNoise label.  The band, comprised of guitarists Stephan Thelen and Bernhard Wagner, bassist Christian Kuntner and drummer Manuel Pasquinelli have long been celebrated for combining the power and dynamics of art rock with a minimalist aesthetic and the quartet's link up with David Torn - suggested by Henry Kaiser - has taken the band's music to new heights.

Lorenzo Feliciati/Elevator Man ....CD $15.99

Lorenzo Feliciati/Elevator Man ....CD $15.99

As a follow-up to his most personal project to date - 2015's Koi - in-demand Italian bassist Lorenzo Feliciati has upped the ante on Elevator Man, a powerhouse recording with echoes of King Crimson, Allan Holdsworth and other Prog Rock icons. Elevator Man features a rotating cast of stellar musicians, including King Crimson drummer Pat Mastelotto, former Holdsworth/Zappa drummer Chad Wackerman, Swedish Freak Guitar shredder Mattias IA Eklundh, Italian progressive metal guitarist Marco Sfogli (currently in Premiata Forneria Marconi), trumpeter Cuong Vu and Feliciati's Naked Truth bandmate Roy Powell on distortion-laced clavinet. As well as composing and arranging the material, Feliciati plays fretted and fretless basses, electric guitar and keyboards on his seventh recording as a leader.

Joshua Trinidad/In November ....CD $15.99

Joshua Trinidad/In November ....CD $15.99

Denver-based trumpeter-composer Joshua Trinidad makes a strikingly original statement on his RareNoise debut, In November. Recorded in Giske, Norway, this highly evocative trio outing features the adventurous Norwegian guitarist-composer and ECM recording artist Jacob Young and drummer Stale Liavik Solberg, a central figure on Oslo's improvising music scene. Brimming with deep and winding lyricism, Trinidad's elegiac seventh album as a leader is a compelling mix of bold long tones on trumpet, atmospheric guitaristry, fluid melodic invention and daring group improv, all delivered with rare authority by the three intrepid improvisers. From the minor key rubato opener "Beside" to the melancholy soundscape "Bell (Hymn)" to a darkly entrancing "The Attic" and the stirring title track, Trinidad and his empathetic crew of deep listeners show respect toward space and silence on these spellbinding noirish numbers.

Dave Liebman with Adam Rudolph and Tatsuya Nakatani/The Unknowable ....CD $15.99

Dave Liebman with Adam Rudolph and Tatsuya Nakatani/The Unknowable ....CD $15.99

The Unknowable is a completely improvised, spontaneous group-composed body of music created by legendary saxophone and flute player Dave Liebman together with celebrated percussionists Adam Rudolph and Tatsuya Nakatani. Dave Liebman, whose legendary, more than fifty year-long, career has seen him work with Miles Davis, Elvin Jones, John Scofield, Chick Corea, Dave Holland, Bob Moses and Richie Beirach, collaborates here with Adam Rudolph, himself one of the deepest percussionists of the last half century, whose collaborations encompass Don Cherry, Pharaoh Sanders, Bill Laswell, Herbie Hancock, Omar Sosa and several members of the AACM, and with Japan-born percussionist and sound innovator Tatsuya Nakatani. The result of this extraordinary meeting of the minds is music that stems from the worlds of free and spiritual jazz, yet goes beyond. It is incredibly open, has no north, south, east and west, it is simultaneously music of all humanity and of the cosmos.

Bobby Previte/Rhapsody ....CD $15.99

Bobby Previte/Rhapsody ....CD $15.99

Highly respected drummer and prolific composer Bobby Previte continues his Terminals trilogy with Rhapsody, a song cycle on the subject of transit and migration. Subtitled In Transit: Terminals II, Previte's newest work was scored for acoustic sextet and features fellow composer/improvisers in guitarist Nels Cline, harpist Zeena Parkins, pianist John Medeski, vocalist, alto saxophonist Fabian Rucker and vocalist-erhu player Jen Shyu. This latest major work comes on the heels of Previte's powerful prior RareNoise release, Mass, a nine-part work scored for choir, pipe organ and heavy metal trio. Rhapsody was commissioned by the Greenfield Prize at the Hermitage Artist Retreat in Florida and had it's world premiere on April 21, 2017 at New College in Sarasota.

Roswell Rudd/Embrace ....CD $15.99

Roswell Rudd/Embrace ....CD $15.99

For his follow-up to 2016's purely improvised studio recording Strength & Power (a cooperative quartet album featuring pianist Jamie Saft, bassist Trevor Dunn and drummer Balazs Pandi), the ever-adventurous trombonist-composer Roswell Rudd made a decided shift in direction on his first RareNoise Records release as a leader by embracing jazz standards he has loved and played throughout his long and illustrious career. Accompanied by the brilliant pianist Lafayette Harris, upright bass virtuoso Ken Filiano and soulful vocal sensation Fay Victor, the 81-year-old jazz master delivers with rare potency and poignancy on the aptly-titled Embrace. This intimate, drum-less quartet session is brimming with conversational playing between all the participants, with Rudd and Victor partaking in some particularly interactive exchanges on jazz classics like Billy Strayhorn's "Something to Live For," Charles Mingus' "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat," Thelonious Monk's beautiful ballad "Pannonica," the standard "Can't We Be Friends" and the traditional "House of the Rising Sun."

Lef/Hypersomniac ....CD $15.99

Lef/Hypersomniac ....CD $15.99

A dark soundtrack-like work from Lorenzo Esposito Fornasari (AKA Lef), performed by an all-star band featuring American bassist Bill Laswell, Norwegian guitar visionary Eivind Aarset, Norwegian jazz trumpeter Nils Petter Molvaer, thunderous Norwegian drummer Kenneth Kapstad (Motorpsycho), British saxophonist Rebecca Sneddon (Free Nelson Mandoomjazz) and Norwegian organist Stale Storlokken (Supersilent, Motorpsycho).

Eraldo Bernocchi/Rosebud ....CD $15.99

Eraldo Bernocchi/Rosebud ....CD $15.99

Experimental Italian guitarist, electro-producer and sound designer Eraldo Bernocchi joins forces with percussionist FM Einheit (a founder of the influential German industrial group Einsturzende Neubauten) and London-based cellist Jo Quail on Rosebud, a compelling mix of tranquil ambient sounds and pummeling industrial onslaughts. From the opening "Bloom," an 11-minute suite that travels from evocative ambiance to caustic crescendo, to the closing theme "The Inquirer," which emerges gradually over a haunting drone and builds to a hellacious distortion-laced guitar climax, Rosebud carries a dark, foreboding undercurrent while showcasing the trio's uncanny group-think in the throes of organized chaos.

Jamie Saft/Solo a Genova ....CD $15.99

Jamie Saft/Solo a Genova ....CD $15.99

Over the decades, Jamie Saft has recorded or performed with (among many others) The Beastie Boys, Bad Brains, B-52's and Iggy Pop. His discography spans over 160 recordings as a leader or sideman.  This is his first solo piano album.  Solo a Genova contains Jamie's interpretations of some of tunes from some of his favorite musicians: Z.Z. Top, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Curtis Mayfield, Stevie Wonder, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis & Charles Ives.  Jamie Saft's first solo album is an unrestrained experience, taking an eclectic mix of material – jazz, rock, pop, blues, modernist classical, and a few Saft originals – and creating an hour's coherent listening without sacrificing any of the variety. In other words, some choices might seem odd on paper but aurally, it works, and then some.  The reasoning behind the choices goes back to the original idea for a solo concert in 2007 in Italy. Saft wanted, "...to present American music as an example of positive, forward thinking art ...art that resisted hatred and negativity, art that promoted a positive path forward..."

David Fiuczynski & Phillip Gerschlauer/MikroJazz ....CD $15.99

David Fiuczynski & Phillip Gerschlauer/MikroJazz ....CD $15.99

2017 release. On MikroJazz, their cutting edge joint project for RareNoise Records, German saxophonist Philipp Gerschlauer and guitarist David Fiuczynski explore the world of music that falls between the cracks of the tempered scale. Joined by jazz drumming legend Jack DeJohnette, fretless electric bassist Matt Garrison and microtonal keyboardist Giorgi Mikadze, this daring crew creates dreamy, otherworldly soundscapes on tunes by Gerschlauer like aptly-titled "Hangover (Schlechter Kater)" and "LaMonte's Gamelan Jam" along with a swinging microtonal tune "Mikro Steps" and other originals like Fiuczynski's "MiCroY Tyner," "Zirkus Macabre" and "Lullaby Nightmare." Fiuczynski, who heads up the Planet MicroJam Institute at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, previously released two microtonal recordings on RareNoise - 2012's Planet MicroJam, which opened a Pandora's Box on non-Western tuning, and 2016's Flam! Blam! Pan-Asian MicroJam!, which was jointly dedicated to 20th century classical composer Olivier Messiaen and innovative hip-hop record producer JDilla. Gerschlauer, who was inspired by French composer Gerard Grisey and Paul Desmond had been independently exploring the world of microtonal music in Berlin and New York before developing a method of dividing an octave (12 notes in equal temperament) into 128 notes on the alto saxophone.

O.R.k./Soul of an Octopus ....CD $15.99

2017 release. Following on the heels of 2015's captivating Inflamed Rides, the members of the powerful collective O.R.k. - lead singer Lorenzo Esposito Fornasari, Porcupine Tree bassist Colin Edwin, Marta Sui Tubi guitarist Carmelo Pipitone and King Crimson drummer Pat Mastelotto - were primed to deliver an even more potent statement for their sophomore offering. Coming off of a triumphant tour of Europe and South America, they were charged to take things up a notch. And so it was with Soul of an Octopus, their second recording and RareNoise debut. This one finds the four kindred spirits dealing in even deeper waters. "After Inflamed Rides we did around 30 shows in Europe, Argentina, Chile and Mexico this year," says Fornasari. "That definitely helped us to reign in our sound and get to a more focused mutual vision. So all the pieces from the new album represent an honest and effective picture of who we are as O.R.k. right now."
