The Classics of the Future
Musea is a 10-year old non-profit record label dedicated to the promotion of Progressive Rock. This style of music was made popular in the 70's by bands such as Genesis, Yes, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Van der Graaf Generator, Magma, Ange, and many others. However, the rough rules of the market and the lack of media support led Progressive music to lose favor by the late 70's.
Despite this public desertion throughout the 80's and 90's, artists from around the whole world perpetuate this aesthetic. Opposed to rigid formulae, Progressive music mixes Rock with elements from other horizons such as classical music (Yes, Genesis, ELP), jazz (Soft Machine, Caravan), electronic music (Heldon, Tangerine Dream), world music (Peter Gabriel) and many more.
During these last two decades, many artists have released masterpieces of great interest; but due to media disinterest, these gems have not yet reached the music lover's ears. The realization of this problem led to the founding of Musea. For many years, a crew of volunteers has participated in this adventure with no other aim than that of sharing the huge pleasure they feel while listening to these unknown treasures. With its production of hundreds of records (original releases and reissues) , Musea offers any open-minded listener bored with commercial music imposed by a media ruled by money, a collection of gems that lead to new and exciting musical horizons.
Apogee/Mystery Remains ....import CD $18.99
Apogee is the solo project by Arne Schafer, guitarist and singer in the German band Versus X, probably the best German progressive band nowadays. On this fourth album Arne is helped by Uwe Vollmar and Thomas Reiner, former and current drummer of Versus X. These experienced and talented musicians play an ambitious symphonic progressive music. If the influences of King Crimson, Van der Graaf Generator and Peter Hammill are still there, the music has become more personal, in a more meditative and contemplative way sometimes, and with a more melodic approach. Five long pieces (9 to 20 minutes) confirm one more time Arne's taste for complex musical structures. "Mystery Remains" is an excellent symphonic album, sophisticated and intelligent.

Area - Probably the most original Italian group from the Seventies, melting rock, Progressive, jazz, ethnic music in a way nobody did it before. A music extremely constructed, varied, sometimes written sometimes improvised, with cast spelling melodies alterning with frantic parts. Sometimes considered as the Italian Magma. Next to the incredible singer Demetrio Stratos and his protest lyrics, we could find Paolo Tofani, guitarist in I Califfi, and the French bass player Patrick Djivas. This last musician then became part of PFM a little later.

It's the first album by this French band, but Continuum must already be considered as a major outfit in the "dark metal prog" musical sphere. Like the band's musical influences, including Dream Theater, Andromeda or Pain of Salvation, Continuum composes and plays a violent, wild music, mixing aggressive riffs and rythms with sophisticated structures and symphonic keyboards. It's a real pleasure to hear the musical fights between Aldebaran's guitars and Franck Dibari's keyboards, enhanced by powerful and frantic drumming. Chris/A Glimpse Inside ....import CD $18.99
It's the first album by Christiaan Bruin, a Dutch musician who played everything on the album, and also did artwork and mastering. In a vein near other Dutch bands like Knight Area or bands like Splinter, Chris offers a modern progressive music, made of straightforward melodic work combined with complex, symphonic arrangements. The vocal parts are sometimes reminiscent of Shadow Gallery (or even The Beach Boys!). Playing piano and guitar as well, Christian cleverly uses programming. Neo-prog' lovers will certainly appreciate "A Glimpse Inside," a refreshing, entertaining but ambitious album.
Arpia/Racconto D'Inverno ....import CD $18.99
This is an unusual project, by a new Italian band: a novel, written by Leonardo Bonetti, and a concept album adapting/recreating the story. Arpia is L. Bonetti (vocals, acoustic guitar, keyboards, bass), Paola Feraiorni on female vocals, Fabio Brait on acoustic guitar, and Aldo Orazi on drums: an unusual line-up too, for an acoustic music – becoming more and more symphonic with the use of keyboards in the second half of the album. Arpia's music is difficult to compare with any other. Unquiet harmonies and atmospheres recall King Crimson, or the acoustic works of Peter Hammill, sometimes also Banco and the Italian progressive trend, with Italian lyrics and singing. Well produced, played with intensity, "Racconto d' Inverno" is a musical spell enchanting the listener.
Neuschwanstein/Alice In Wonderland ....import CD $18.99
Neuchwanstein is a German band, famous among the progsters, due to its wonderful album "Battlement," released in 1979. "Battlement" offered an admirable music, in a vein near the early Genesis albums. Musea is very proud to release today the very first recording of the band, a concept album! "Alice im Wunderland" is a 40 minutes piece of music, composed in 1973. And "Alice imWunderland" confirms Neuchwanstein's significant importance in German rock history: the band succeeded, from the beginning, in creating a fluid, refined music, intense and suggestive, typical of the creative enthusiasm of the early seventies. Normally structured around the keyboard sections, the music often underlines vivid and very refined piano pieces.With its strong melodies, its airy and dynamic flute solis, its dreamlike atmospheres, and the subtlety of the guitar effects, influenced by Steve Hackett's style, "Alice im Wunderland" easily takes its place among the best contemporary works of Camel or Focus
Little Tragedies/The Paris Symphony ....import CD $18.99
A Russian band with a variable number of musicians, Little Tragedies was born from the will of composer and musician Gennadi Ilyin to experiment new musical expression forms. More particularly, his art could be described as a hybrid mixture of Seventies-like Progressive rock, fusion jazz-rock and contemporary classical musics. The whole thing played through vintage keyboards reminding of the seventies, but especially with an obvious Slavonic personality. Apart from ELP and the classical composers, one could think of Pink Floyd, Genesis or Focus, with the characteristic sound of the Russian bands. The music is a brilliant mix of rock, classical music and jazz, with heavy-metal traces in some guitar riffs.
Various Artists/Tuonen Tytar II - A Tribute To Finnish Progressive Rock Of The Seventies Volume Two ....import 3 CD set $45.99
Finnish magazine Colossus started its now famous collection of tributes to the Progressive rock movement of the Seventies with Tuonen Tytar "A Tribute To Finnish Progressive Rock Of The Seventies," obviously dedicated to the local scene. Almost a decade later and a dozen albums jointly published with the Musea label, here's the second part of Tuonen Tytar. Thirty-one bands contributed to this three CD project, more than three hours of musical happiness ! Wigwam, Haikara or Kalevala, but also to less known Finnish bands, are found here. As with the previous Colossus and Musea projects, drum machines are banned, and analog sounds preferred.
Sebkha-Chott/De La Persistance De La Mythologie Chottienne En ??? Vélos ....import CD $18.99
It's the fourth album by this French band, and its music remains perfectly unusual, odd, and fascinating. It sometimes recalls Zappa, Magma, sometimes also King Crimson (acid guitars especially) or VDGG's mad sax, Etron Fou Leloublan (the sense of vocal and musical delirium), Mr. Bungle, and even Eastern Europe music you can hear in Kusturica's films (by the way, just the same sense of delirium). Imagine amad brass section coupled with crazy (but heavy!) guitars, lunatic vocals and sounds coming from outer space, all of them controlled by a clean, precise rhythm section: here is Sebkha Chott's "Mekanik metal disco” (so they say).
Quikion/Escargot Bianco ....import CD $18.99
Quikion is a Japanese band that's released five albums starting in the late nineties. Initially released in 1999, Escargot Bianco's new release offers several previously unreleased bonus tracks, plus one live track. The whole album is typical of the very peculiar musical style of Quikion, an acoustic band influenced by European folk music. Not unlike Pascal Comelade or Klimperei, Quikion offers a fragile and delicate music, with unusual instruments added to the acoustic guitar: concertina, castanets, glockenspiel, accordion, pianica. The Japanese female singing coupled with the European/traditional folk influence (from France and Eastern Europe especially) is very pleasant, refreshing and surprising.

No Name is a band from Luxembourg created in the late eighties, having released four albums since 20 years. Its music is a worked-out neo-progressive rock in a vein near Pendragon, IQ, Pallas, and other members of this eighties british trend. Celebrating twenty years of carreer is always a big event. The Luxembourger band chose to illustrate this with the release of its first ever best-of album. "20 Candles" includes ten of the quintet's most famous compositions, rerecorded for the occasion, with the help of guest musicians. Apart from the candles, the icing of the birthday cake is made of two unrealeased tracks!
Narrow Pass/In This World And Beyond ....import CD $18.99
This Italian band released a brilliant first album in 2006, "A Room of Fairy Queens." The guitarist Mauro Montobbio and the vocalist Valeria Caucino were members of the mythical Eris Pluvia. "In this World and Beyond" is in a similar musical vein, mixing celtic influences with progressive ones, acoustic and electric sequences, instrumental moments and songs. Several guests play here bass, drums, sax, flutes, piano or violin, and help in creating a refined progressive music, influenced by Genesis, PFM, Camel, with a more acoustic and celtic touch that brings them near Iona and sometimes Enya. It's a melodious, suggestive and dreamy music, full of grace and softness, like Valeria's fragile and delicate voice.
Kotebel/Ouroboros ....import CD $18.99
It's the fifth album - in ten years - by this Spanish band. Kotobel has proved to be one of the most innovative and ambitious bands of contemporary progressive music. Led by keyboard virtuoso Carlos Plaza, Kotobel's music includes classical influences (Ravel, Debussy...), progressive and symphonic, and experimental (Univers Zero). "Ouroboros" offers six instrumental tracks (plus one bonus live track), well balanced between keyboards and guitars, with syncopated and complex rhythms sometimes reminiscent of Gentle Giant. Not unlike other Musea's bands in the past Kotobel succeeds in being melodious, ambitious, symphonic and experimental in the same time.
Bertrand Loreau/Reminiscences ....import CD $18.99
Bertrand Loreau is a French composer of electronic music who has released several album since the early nineties, but composed and made shows several years before. "Reminiscences" is a collection of 13 instrumental pieces, among his early works on synthesizers, like Polymoog and mini-moog, Yamaha DX7, and many others. Influenced by Klaus Schulze or Vangelis, and using sequences not unlike Tangerine Dream here and there, Bertrand has always composed a melodious and suggestive music, often inviting to dream and meditation. These early works show a mature composer, creating a personal musical world.

"Mal de Terre," the band's first album, is a concept about our modern world, de-humanized by TV, decadence and pollution. Abacab's influences include all progressive bands from the seventies to the nineties. Like Ange or Mona Lisa, theatrical lyrics and singing are often in the foreground, with dreamlike atmospheres and sounds ala Pink Floyd, but Abacab also develops a strong metal prog' feel a la Dream Theater, with lively guitar and keyboard solis. Intense and well played, "Mal de Terre" is a sort of "Mona Lisa meets metal prog'" trip, enjoyable and inspired.

The Musea label and the Finnish magazine Colossus endlessly continue their quest for the greatest universal themes, in order to complete their collection of concept -albums dedicated to Progressive rock. The hero of the day is Dante Alighieri, the famous medieval author from Firenze who wrote "The Divine Comedy." That's precisely this epic piece of work, without a doubt one of the greatest books of all times, that serves as the basis for this new project. And of course, it has been divided in three parts: Inferno, Purgatorio and Paradiso. Apocalypse was the first Brazilian band signed by Musea. "The Bridge Of Light" has been captured live in front of an enthusiastic Brazilian audience in November 2006. You just need to listen to the two opening songs to realize how good this band is: the first one gets closer to the best of Deep Purple, whereas the second one strongly evokes Fish's Marillion. And what about the remaining tracks? They just sound like... Apocalypse!
Mindflower/Little Enchanted Void ....import CD $18.99
It took six years for this Italian band to compose and create "Little Enchanted Void," and it was worth waiting! "Little Enchanted Void" is a concept album in which a creature of light is travelling from chaos to purity - should we say "from genesis to revelation?" "Little enchanted void" is structured in an unusual way (26 short musical fragments linked to each other, in an impressionistic manner), and the music is gorgeous: additional players offer violin, oboe, viola, cello. It's a brand new chamber symphonic music: the musicians use acoustic sequences –especially delicate piano parts - electric ones, neo-classic, ambient and electro. It sometimes recalls the spirit of Anthony Phillips or Peter Gabriel, but most of the time it's just Mindflower! Melodious and worked out, this precious music haunted by airy strings and soft vocals was partly recorded in Real World studios, and mastered in Abbey Road studios: a brilliant and secret music, revealing its treasures after several listenings.
Jean-Jacques Toussaint/From Tiemko To Travelling ....import CD $18.99
Jean-Jacques Toussaint was the keyboardist of the French band Tiemko who created a really original progressive music in the late eighties/early nineties, influenced by prog bands like King Crimson, but also by classical, contemporary music and jazz-rock. For this solo album Toussaint welcomes numerous musicians like Tiemko's guitarist Eric Chauvidan, drummer F.Verly, and others on accordion, trumpet, sax, violin, cello. This chamber orchestra played 13 instrumental pieces with very diverse instrumentation, length, atmospheres and musical inspirations, going from jazz to progressive and experimental music, including classical influences, and even, here or there, electro hints: versatile keyboards, suggestive melodies and harmonies which sometimes recall Tiemko.
Tee/The Earth Explorer ....import CD $18.99
Here is the first album by a new Japanese band, a five piece combo (keyboards/flute/guitars/bass and drums). This instrumental music (with voices used as instruments) is developed into six mid-long pieces (7-8 minutes). It's a lively, dynamic progressive music, with numerous flute parts played by a virtuoso (Kenji Imai), and suggestive, dominating keyboards. Think of Camel (in the seventies), PFM, Vermillion Sands, and you'll have an idea of this beautiful, melodious work. Tee, like Kenso, also includes jazz-rock hints and rhythms. "The Earth Explorer" is played with enthusiasm, and succeeds in mixing the seventies feeling and a modern production.
Outre Mesure/Abacadae ....import CD $18.99
Outre Mesure is the name of a young French band from the city of Lille, and includes Marc Dosiere, (trumpet & bugle), Jerome Rosele (tenor saxophone), Jean-Louis Morais (guitar), Olivier Verhaeghe (bass) and Charles Duytschaever (drums). Their music is a kind of electric free-jazz, although being well-constructed, getting close to progressive rock and new musics. No doubt Henry Cow, Soft Machine and Frank Zappa were main influences for the quintet. Published on the Great Winds label, "Abacadae" resfers to a musical structure made of several themes, one being repeated. That's the case for the rondo.
Fantasmagoria/Day & Night ....import CD $18.99
Fantasmagoria is the name of a Japanese progressive rock band, led by the female violinist Miki Fujimoto. She moved to United States at age of eleven, graduated from several music schools all around the world. The group aims at playing irregular rhythms with melodic patterns, from classical essence to King Crimson, Curved Air, jazz-rock fusion and symphonic music. Fantasmagoria's energetic live performances received great acclaim and applause, especially at the 2005 edition of BajaProg, as well as France's ProgSud 2007.

Diallele is a young French band playing experimental jazz, born in the year 2005. The trio is made of saxophone and clarinet player Mathieu Lemaire, guitarist Sylvain Lemaire and drummer Romain Berce. The recording sessions for the first self-titled album took place at Poitiers' Carre Bleu. Mixing and mastering were handled by David Mascunian. Diallele's music balances between jazz and progressive rock, in all its aspects.

As a true legend of the electric bass, Jeff Berlin is often viewed as the best instrumentalist of his generation. He was revealed through the jazz-rock fusion movement during the second half of the Seventies, notably playing in a trio with drummer Tony Williams and guitarist Allan Holdsworth. The latter made him acquainted with a certain Bill Bruford, with whom he then formed one of the most accurate rhythm sections ever heard. The list of stars that invited Jeff Berlin would be much too long, but let's quote only Al Di Meola, Patrick Moraz, Randy Brecker, John McLaughlin, ABWH, Billy Cobham.... Along with this extreme activity, this American musician pursues a discreet solo carrier, celebrating an instrumental smart and distinguished jazz-rock fusion, deprived of any free demonstration of virtuosity. The two latest releases to date were published through M.A.J. Records, the artist's own record company: "Lumpy Jazz" (2004) and "Aneurhythms" (2006). Renamed "Ace Of Bass" in Japan, the latter album includes ten tracks lasting a bit more than an hour. Jeff Berlin had to find instrumentalists able to cope with the demands: this happened through the presence of drummer Vinnie Colaiuta.

Minimum Vital releases its seventh album! Eagerly awaited since "Atlas" in 2004, this new opus is a new milestone in the band's career. Minimum Vital has always been one of the most original, innovative and ambitious French contemporary rock bands, and "Capitaines" is by no means an exception. Featuring guests on harp and percussion, the band still includes female vocalist Sonia Nedelec, bass player Eric Rebeyrol, and the composers Jean-Luc and Thierry Payssan. Riveryman is the first album of 30 year old Finnish professional guitarist, Tony Riveryman, helped on drums by Pikkis. He studied also music in a Pop/Jazz academy in Finland, and has played in a metal band; he still plays in a Finnish dance band. But "Magic World" is definitely progressive/symphonic music, influenced by Yes, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Spock's Beard, etc. Here are eight songs, and most of them are around ten or fifteen minutes long. There are also lively flute parts. There are medieval influences in the vocal parts as well. A music full of strangeness, dreamy and fascinating.

It's the second album by this French band, after a first one released by Musea in 2006 under the name Eye to Eye, "One in every crowd." With a new singer and a new bass player, Eye 2 Eye plays a melodious and lyrical neo-progressive music, influenced by early Marillion albums, Pendragon, and also "first progressive generation bands" like Genesis or Pink Floyd. With three pieces lasting a quarter of an hour, Eye 2 Eye prefers complex and ambitious pieces, in which bombastic keyboards and beautiful, lyrical, fluid guitar parts are enhanced by a precise and sober drumming and bass playing. It's a well-balanced music, with delicacy and power at the same time. All neo-progressive lovers – and also fans of David Gimour!- will certainly find "After All" delightful. It’s a really positive evolution since "One in Every Crowd."

This new French band is composed of a keyboardist/guitarist, a violin and bass player, and a drummer, all of whom sing. They are playing on "Dreamland" with a string quatuor, and "Dreamland" is the musical version of a complete show, with a dancer, a lightshow, etc. "Dreamland" is a poem by Edgar Allan Poe, adapted here in seven parts. Eidolon is often reminiscent of Pink Floyd, sometimes Anekdoten and the French band Pulsar. It's a music full of atmospheres, with dominating instrumental sequences, alternating contemplative or experimental moments - with floating sounds of keyboards and diverse sounds, with more progressive ones, in which a lyrical electric guitar brings a lot of emotion, and sometimes become wild enough. The atmospheres are also enhanced by soft vocals, full of melancholy. A beautiful music very original and intense.

Xystus is a Dutch Progressive heavy-metal band formed in 1999 by drummer Ivo Van Dijk and guitarist-vocalist Bas Dolmans. They enlisted bassist Mark Brekelmans and second guitarist Bob Witsma. Through the course of releasing two albums, 2004's "Receiving Tomorrow" and 2006's "Surreal," the band built up a buzz and fanbase in The Netherlands. The musicians even contacted the Utrechtsch Studenten Concert (The country's oldest symphony orchestra), in order to record the rock opera "Equilibrio." Conceived as both an actual stage production and studio recording, is was performed to four sold out audiences in July 2008. Over four thousand people witnessed the opera. Sensory is proud to release the studio recording of "Equilibrio," which features key scenes from the opera. The story revolves around a wanderer named Diegu (Bas Dolmans) who finds himself caught between the forces of Good and Evil, the power mad ruler Primos (John Vooijs) and the altruistic rebel Avelin (Michelle Splietelhof). Primos makes a pact with Death (George Osthoek) to take over the world. After unsuccessful efforts by Diegu to mediate between Avelin and Primos, the latter ends up with complete power and the world is thrown out of balance. Diegu is summoned by the goddess Lady Sophia (Simone Simons). She watches over Earth and entrusts Diegu with the job of reuniting Primos and Avelin in order to restore the balance between Good and Evil again.

The latter, a long-time synthesizers enthusiast started on stage in 1981, and this experience translated into a simple choice "everything live with a lot of space devoted to improvisations." For example, he took part in the compilation "Patch Work Music" and then recorded "Ephemeride" two years later, which was well-liked by the media thanks to its qualities in terms of deep and hypnotic sound atmospheres. His latest production was issued in 2005 "Close Encounters of Electronic Music," and was a compilation of a concert given in Livorno during August 2004. Jean-Christophe Allier, new-age musician and yogi for two decades, has now started to work on sound thanks to a new perception of the dimension of sound depths, that only Sound Holograms can reveal.

This American band had released two albums during the early nineties, and then disappeared for fifteen years! Its resurrection, with the original line-up, allowed the recording of "Lost at Sea," a concept album about a short story included in the booklet with the lyrics. It deals with mankind's story, contemporary confusion and struggle for power, through religions or political action. ANCIENT VISION was originally influenced by JETHRO TULL, Tom Hook's vocals reminding one of Ian Anderson with a more grave tone. "Lost At Sea," a symphony made of four parts and eight pieces, is much more eclectic and diverse, although strictly based on symphonic structures and arrangements. The music remains faithful to the seventies inspiration, with grandiose and suggestive analog keyboards, great keyboards/guitars interplay, intense acoustic moments, rockier parts here and there. It also includes refreshing parts with female vocals, sax, balalaika. Carefully composed and played, "Lost at Sea" is a beautiful modern symphony.

Some four years after the previous album, here is finally ANEKDOTEN's fifth opus. It was worth waiting for! "A Time Of Day" seems to come back to the sound, energy and ambition of the beginnings, offering as an overture a double swig of Mellotron plus a few well inspired schizoid riffs. However, those who prefer up-to-date and mainstream sounds are not forgotten either. The presence of a flautist, guest on the second track "30 Pieces," bringing about a welcome wind of freshness, should also be noted.

French keyboard player and composer Didier BARDIN is a Musicology graduate from Paris' famous Sorbonne University. The conception of his project "Le Pouvoir Des Pierres" originates from a question: is it possible to create a soothing and beneficial music, while varied and interesting? One first work concerned the discoveries of Professor Lee BARTEL, of Toronto University. His searches reveal the direct effect of certain frequencies on the production of alpha, beta and delta cerebral waves. They also show the action of certain rhythms on the respiratory and cardiac cycle. The symbolism of certain minerals, as well as their vibratory properties, appearead as an appropriate concept, while proposing a readability which is largely accessible to the listener. The five years of work that this project took enabled to overlap closely these different aspects, the creation of specific tonal sonic textures supposing a melodic and harmonic writing of the "tension/expansion" type. Nevertheless, the artist had to propose a pleasant and harmonious music, readily accessible, leaving the listener with the liberty to choose his own listening and attention level.

It's the ninth solo album by this French guitarist, different from its predecessors as usual. His first album "Jeux de nains" was the first to be released by the Musea label in 1985. "JPB" is the guitarist from the band ALIFAIR, and also a renowned sound engineer. Every new album he composes and plays is a complete renewal, and he seems to have played every possible style from jazz to rock and symphonic music, in a personal way. "La boite a musique" is a collection of twelve instrumental pieces for acoustic guitar. It's delicate, refined, nostalgic, full of sensibility and emotion, highly suggestive: just beautiful.

CAGE is an Italian progressive rock band, led by keyboards player Alessandro Bugliani, born in the mid '80s. The five musicians have perfectly assimilated the lessons of ELP, Genesis, IQ, Gentle Giant and so on, whilst opting for a very modern approach, as far as the sound and the composition work is concerned. The emotional range is quite wide, from The Flower Kings' luminous guitar soli to ambiences not unlike Van der Graaf Generator. After an introductory track showing influences of a light jazz-rock, not unlike Kenso, the delicate and refined symphonic progressive rock comes back to the front. Mostly instrumental, it also leaves space to the vocals, more gabrielish than Peter Gabrial himself, courtesy of the band's new singer. The second track "The Scream" might even let you think that you're listening to a brand new composition by The Watch. Let's also note beautiful guitar parts, lyrical to the bone, mixing the styles of Steve Hackett, Allan Holdsworth or even Pat Metheny.

As steady as a click, CAST carries on making albums, so regularly that you have the feeling the Mexican band has always been a part of the progressive rock scene. It even could have been so, if only a lack of funds had not forced them to wait twenty years until they could release their works. At least, since the band's birth in the Seventies, it had time to polish up its music! In a way similar to The Flower Kings, Cast loves multiplying the releases and alternating single and double-albums. This time, the twin-edition has been favoured. And the motto "Excellent symphonic Progressive rock album" has been kept. A quality trademark still shining south of the Rio Grande.

Yngve Guddal and Roger T.Matte are two norwegian keyboard virtuosos who create a musical event three years ago: they rearranged GENESIS classics for two grand pianos. Same formula for this 'vol.2,' with a recording from 2002-3 on two Steinway grand pianos. Paul Whitehead, who realized the most famous Genesis cover paintings through the years, created 'Escape from New-York' for this release. It’s a fantastic way to re-discover masterpieces like 'Me and Sarah Jane,' 'The Battle of Epping Forest,' 'The Cinema Show,' 'The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway,' 'Blood on the Rooftops,' 'Seven Stones' and 'Eleventh Earl of Mar.' It's a real re-creation for two pianos, with real dialogues between both players, complex and worked out, perfectly composed and played: exceptional! Complex arrangements, an excellent production.

This is a brand new Swedish band, existing since 2004. KLOTET is a quartet (drums/organ and keyboards/bass/guitars) which plays an instrumental progressive rock. These 14 pièces are concise, but full of a very special flavour. Based on the organ/Rhodes sounds, the atmosphères recall the early seventies, especially according to the band itself - the Swedish bands at that time, and musicians like BO HANSSON. It's a very dynamic and lively music, sometimes even frantic, with melodies typical of the Scandinavian touch we all appreciate in progressive rock. Including some unquiet harmonies alla KING CRIMSON, KLOTET's music is enhanced by a roaming bass, and played with a constant enthusiasm. An excellent and really original album.

The third album by this Russian band, "Return" was released by Musea in 2005. It offered a gorgeous neo-classic progressive rock ala ELP, with bombastic keyboards. "The Sixth Sense" reveals a great improvement, and an eclectic inspiration: the music recalls E.L.P, but also Genesis, Pink Floyd, Camel and Focus. It's a subtle mix of neo-classical music, rock, jazz, with some hints of metal on guitar solis. The composer and keyboardist G.Ilyin uses seventies keyboards, and offers nice and lively piano parts. Russian singing is to notice, but the music is mainly instrumental, played with a real technical skill and well produced. An excellent album.

LOST WORLD is a musical trio, and its musicians come from RUSSIA. They created the band ten years ago, as they were students in the musical conservatory of Moscow, and already released an album in 2001. The three of them are virtuosos, Vassily Soloviev on flute and percussion, the composer A.Didorenko on guitars and violins, A.Akimov on keyboards, percussion and programming. These twelve instrumental pieces reveal a very high musical level, a very dynamic and lively music, with incredible violin parts, frantic but not heavy rythms, suggestive melodies. Due to these elements it may recall here or there UK or KANSAS, but this music is absolutely personal, influenced by classical composers and progressive music.

This American band, with its second album, "plays thoughtful rock with a furnished feel" --so they say. "Hoop of Flame" is made of two long musical suites (23 and 29 minutes). Is it a coincidence if the name of MIRAGE, a French current Progressive rock band, is also the one of one of the most famous albums of CAMEL? Some serious clues were already given in their first opus "A Secret Place," released in 2001 under the Musea label. If that was still not enough, "Tales From The Green Sofa" (2004) would definitely take all doubts away! Beyond the obvious link between them, these two pieces of work reveal above all the intelligence of musicians who try to recapture the inspiration of the Seventies British Progressive rock legend. The fluid guitar riffs, the delightful Hammond organ parts and the bewitching flute are of course there, and all the songs are well interpretated, with a lot of personality. The lyrics (In English) are modern, existential or inspired by science-fiction themes. They reveal a permanent desire of going deeper into the reflection. If the first effort by MIRAGE has allowed to build a reputation, the second one obviously strenghthens professionalism and talent. Carrying the flame of the lyric symphonism dear to Andy LATIMER and his disciples, it is sure that this group has a great potential for the future... This new opus named "Borderline" follows the magic musical trip driven by both previous ones and promises good vibes for all fans of early Camel’s era!

Yes fans will recognize the name of Tim Morse as the author of the book 'Yesstories' featuring in depth interviews with all members of the band past and present. His obvious love of Yes can be found in his debut CD as well. This Italian band is a project by Mauro Montobbio, a guitarist/keybpardist. Narrow Pass existed briefly in the eighties, had disappeared, and is back with a tremendous first album. Several musicians contribute to "A Room Of Fairy Queens," on drums and bass, but also on vocals (Valeria Caucino and Alessandro Corvaglia, the second one being the singer from LA MASCHERA DI CERA) and flute/sax/bagpipes (Edmondo Romano). Valeria and Edmondo were both part of the only album released by ERIS PLUVIA, a masterpiece from the nineties. And Narrow Pass sometimes recalls ERIS PLUVIA: an exquisite sensibility, pure and refined melodies, airy flute parts, a common CAMEL influence. But NARROW PASS also reveals some PINK FLOYD hints, and lyrical guitar solis not unlike MARILLION's first era. Don't miss this masterpiece, the second album is on its way!

Here is something really special: a truly original progressive rock band. It's the second album by this Finnish combo, and its musicians are all about 25 years old: you'll hear about them! Metaepitome is composed by six complex pieces, two of them are real progressive suites (15/20 minutes long). You hear some remaining influences like Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Rush, Marillion, Dream Theater during this hour of pure progressive music, mixed with some strange psyche/electro sequences, and powerful metal moments. But you certainly hear seventies keyboard sounds, melodious, lively bass parts, nice flute solis, good vocals, and an excellent guitar player, initially influenced by Satriani/Vai, but who developed a personal playing, eclectic and surprising. Brilliant!

Jean-Luc PAYSSAN created with his twin brother Thierry the famous french band MINIMUM VITAL, twenty years ago. They found a new musical language, mixing jazz-rock, classical, progressive and Middle-Ages music. His first solo album is not a solitary effort: VITAL's keyboards and female vocals are present here with Sonia NEDELEC and Thierry PAYSSAN, together with B.Millon's violin. Jean-Luc plays classical and acoustic guitar, but also theorbo, mandola, cittern, mandolin. "Alone Together" is a very coherent album packed with masterfully combined, excellent ideas. It's plain to hear that these guys simply enjoy playing together. Apart from the beautiful ballads, like the opening track called "different" with an enchanting melody played on xaphoon (also known as 'pocket sax' or 'bamboo flute') or "we are alone together", an ambient-like composition permeated with emotions, you can expect a hefty amount of rock riffs, breathtaking solos, remarkable work of the rhythm section and that ever so wonderfully sounding flute. There are also a few really incredible surprises... Since "Alone Together" is a concept album, it is worthwhile paying attention to the lyrics and the track titles, which ingeniously form one sentence that describes the content of the record. It talks about different kinds of loneliness and estrangement, about being "alone together" in various sorts of relationships - with a friend, a partner, and the family... Bartek, the vocalist, has certainly found his place in the band and gives a truly heartfelt rendition of the lyrics. It's the third album by this Venezuelian artist, guitar virtuoso, living in Miami. Raimundo Rodulfo released in 2000 and 2002 two critically acclaimed albums, "Dreams" and "The Dream Concerto." "Mare e Terra" is more than one step further, with contribution of South American prog stars like Carlos Plaza (leader of Kotobel), Pedro Castillo and Gerardo Ubieda (Tempano), among many others. Rodulfo uses here a chamber orchestra: violins, cello, flutes, sax, clarinet, trumpets, etc., added to usual the rock band, with male and female vocals. Two suites divided in two parts compose these 75 minutes of a fantastic symphonic and neo-classic rock, melodious and adventurous. Rodulfo's guitar playing is reminiscent of Steve Howe (Yes), and is combined with seventies orientated keyboards (including mini-moog), and groovy rhythms, revealing hints of Latin traditional music. This colourful and enthusiast music, constantly inspired and lively, is at the top of the today's symphonic production.

This legendary musician has achieved a sucessful musical career since the Magma days, with ZAO, NEFFESH MUSIC, etc. His unique musical style is a sort of ethnic jazz, influenced by Hungarian music and American music (Coltrane), among others. "My old roots" is a collection of pieces from 1976 and 1980, created with Neffesh Music and for "Chromophonie." Some pieces were never released on CD, and one is an unreleased track, recorded in 2005 with violin player Lajos Horvath. It's an excellent introduction to Seffer's lively, inventive and colourful music. Just brilliant!

This German band from Dusseldorf released an album in 1998, "The Dawn Of Time," and "From Dusk Till Dawn" is made of unreleased 1994 demo tapes, carefully reworked and restored in 2003 with some overdubs and bonus tracks. The result is an excellent album of symphonic/neo progressive. SHADES OF DAWN was then influenced by ELOY, PINK FLOYD, CAMEL, GENESIS (among others), and also MARILLION for some keyboard solis. It's very melodious, nice lyrical guitar solis, well played, with a lot of dynamic and lively instrumental sequences and "airy atmospheres." Waiting for the next album, "Graffity's Rainbow," you’ll certainly enjoy this nice piece of symphonic prog!

SOMA PLANET is a Progressive rock band born in the mid-Nineties, in Barcelona, Catalunya. At first very influenced by bands such as KING CRIMSON (Seventies and Eighties), GONG, CAN or EMBRYO, the musicians quickly achieved a personal style. All their efforts and time were dedicated in finding formulas to play music that permitted at the same time breaking with traditional harmonies and structures, following improvisational patterns built slowly in time, starting in understanding music as a game. The first eponymous album has been recorded during summer 2003. "Bholenath" is the second opus of the band, released in 2008 by the Musea label. There's everything you can imagine in it, as far as Seventies are concerned (Except for keyboards): versatile drumming, roaming bass, a mix of acoustic and electric sequences, vocal (A little) and instrumental (A lot) tracks, one minute interludes and 9-10 minutes complex pieces, nice melodies, frantic rhythms and peaceful moods, electronics, a pandemonium of heavy saxophones and whispering flutes. Their musical style, still influenced by GONG, is a complex mix of Progressive rock, experimental music, jazz and ethnic influences (Indian among others) and percussions.

It's the fourth album by this dutch band, and "Time re-arranged" and "Time to End" had received critical acclaim. S.O.T.E. goes one step further with "Reasons," a concept album that deals with a lifetime Time seems to be the main theme for S.O.T.E.! Connected with mind's existential and philosophical preoccupations in each age of life. S.O.T.E. is basically a power trio (guitars/basses/drums), with some additional keyboards in the background. But the band's music has become fully personal and hard to categorise. The main initial influence for S.O.T.E. was RUSH, and their music was also compared to QUEENSRYCHE, DREAM THEATER's "Scenes from a Memory," or HOLDSWORTH. It gives a good idea of "Reasons'" atmospheres, still dark and tortured, but the music has become really personal, powerful, diverse and constantly inspired, creating an innovative blend of metal and progressive/symphonic genre.

This brazilian band was created in 2000, and this first album was recorded in 2002. "Tarkus" name may sound like a reference to E.L.P., but these six pieces reveal a personal music, although certainly keeping the seventies flame alive. The flute player offers us sequences near CAMEL or JETHRO TULL, and other influences are to be found in GENESIS (especially the guitar parts) or P.F.M and BANCO. But TARKUS musical compositions also offer heavy moments, together with a general symphonic inspiration. "A gaze between the past and the future" is made of six pieces, two of them including covers (of NEXUS and DEVIL DOLL). It's a brilliant symphonic rock, with strong melodies and enthusiasm!

Due to the great demand, Colossus (The Finnish Progressive Music Association) and Musea proudly present their new progressive rock epic, succeeding to Kalevala, The Spaghetti Epic, the Colossus Of Rhodes...: THE SEVEN SAMURAI! The intention is to publish a progressive rock concept album inspired by the famous film by Akira Kurosawa called "The 7 Samurais" (1954). The story has been divided in 3 chapters same as the number of bands participating, each band has chosen one chapter and has made a suite inspired by it. TEMPANO (Venezuela), CAP and TAPROBAN (Italy). The total length of each suite is around 25 minutes. The sound remains faithful to 70's progressive music: original 70's keyboards (Hammond, Moog, Mellotron, Fender Rhodes, Grand Piano etc.) are preferred, and the bands avoid loops, drum machines or other 80's - 90's digital sounds. Tempano, CAP and TAPROBAN have composed three magnificent progressive suites, reminding all the seventies masters, like Genesis and Jethro Tull for Tempano, Banco or King Crimson for CAP, ELP for Taproban, among many other influences. But each piece is also faithful to each band’s style and personality.

During the "1001 Degrés Centigrades" period, MAGMA was stuggling to find a wider audience. This was mainly due to the fact that the French band played such an innovative music and used its own language known under the name Kobaian. So, drummer extraordinaire Christian VANDER and his teammates decided to hide behind a different name and write texts in English. Not too long in fact, as the second side of the only opus recorded have been designed to lead the listener to discover musical landscapes not so far away from Zeuhl. "Undia" even sees the comeback of Kobaian. Unfortunately, the UNIVERIA ZEKT exeperience didn't last long, and MAGMA went back to its own concept shortly after with much success. That's why "The Unnamables" (1971) is often regarded as a mythical album! As every Musea reissue, the CD version includes biography, rare photographs, etc.

In the late Sixties, EKSEPTION and Rick Van Der LINDEN were among the first musicians to create a blend of musical styles that went from classical music to pop and jazz. Extremely popular thanks to its instrumental covers of Ludwig Van BEETHOVEN ("The Fifth") and Aram KHATSATURJAN ("Sabre Dance"), the Dutch line-up was replaced by TRACE in the year 1974. This new band followed in the path taken by EKSEPTION, becoming thus a Progressive rock power-trio led by the keyboards of its virtuoso leader. A serious counterpart to EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER! "An Ekseptional Trace" includes a previously unreleased live recording of TRACE in 1977, with Ian MOSLEY, future co-founder of MARILLION on drums. The Finnish magazine Colossus asked thirty (yes, thirty) progressive bands, from all over the world, to illustrate moments of "Kalevala." Kalevala is the Finnish national epic, made of old Finnish ballads and lyrical songs, a complex and diverse cycle of legends which inspired Tolkien as well as the composer Sibelius, among many others. VERSUS X could become one of the greatest modern Progressive rock bands and the one with the most personality. Those four German musicians (Guitar-vocals, keyboards, bass & drums) perform an elaborate and suggestive music that goes through a lot of effort to create different ambiences. The lyrics (Sung in perfect English by a top vocalist) show an ambition that is only matched by the complex and hyper-refined instrumentation. If it is always possible to relate this band to some Seventies references (Some atmosphere and the singers' voice could evoke ELOY), this mainly translates in their feelings, not so much of the formal aspect of their work. So, the result is some decisively original tracks with a quite unique sound. "Primordial Ocean" showcases four tracks in the 15-20 minutes area, plus one elegant piano interlude. ARNE SCHAEFER's lyrics still combine Science, Philosophy and metaphysical questions. The music stills reveals complex, intricated piano or (Often vintage) keyboards, as well as fine guitar interplays.

XII Alfonso got to be one of the "greatest" bands of international Progressive rock, thanks to their first album issued in 1996 and called "The Lost Frontier." Once more, the band creates a very original instrumental piece of work, seventeen musical fragments mixing symphonic, neo-classic, experimental and French popular music. XII Alfonso can't be linked with anything else, even if its musical approach has some common points with Isildurs Bane for instance. In order to fill the gap between the second and the last volume of the trilogy, XII Alfonso offers today a brand new album, named "Under," trying to illustrate the reality under the events. Fully instrumental, this opus includes many sounds, noises and voices. One may regognize the famous speech by reverend Martin Luther KING, whom the band pays tribute. Musically speaking, the Camel influences from the beginning are now far away, in favour of a more personal approach. And that's with great pleasure that one welcomes the return of the lyrical guitar parts courtesy of Philippe Claerhout, both electric and acoustic.

Yoch'ko Seffer (sax, flute, tarogato), Faton Cahen (piano, synth, bass synth) and François Causse (drums and percussion), recorded these nine pieces live and added some programming. They play an ethnic free jazz, based on afro-american percussion, piano (or synth) and Seffer's instruments which he plays with an incredible energy, including the forgotten "tarogato," a wood instrument used in Hungary in the sixteenth century.
