The Classics of the Future
Musea is a 10-year old non-profit record label dedicated to the promotion of Progressive Rock. This style of music was made popular in the 70's by bands such as Genesis, Yes, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Van der Graaf Generator, Magma, Ange, and many others. However, the rough rules of the market and the lack of media support led Progressive music to lose favor by the late 70's.
Despite this public desertion throughout the 80's and 90's, artists from around the whole world perpetuate this aesthetic. Opposed to rigid formulae, Progressive music mixes Rock with elements from other horizons such as classical music (Yes, Genesis, ELP), jazz (Soft Machine, Caravan), electronic music (Heldon, Tangerine Dream), world music (Peter Gabriel) and many more.
During these last two decades, many artists have released masterpieces of great interest; but due to media disinterest, these gems have not yet reached the music lover's ears. The realization of this problem led to the founding of Musea. For many years, a crew of volunteers has participated in this adventure with no other aim than that of sharing the huge pleasure they feel while listening to these unknown treasures. With its production of hundreds of records (original releases and reissues) , Musea offers any open-minded listener bored with commercial music imposed by a media ruled by money, a collection of gems that lead to new and exciting musical horizons.

Surrounded by a large line-up (bass, three guitars, five brass instruments, keyboards, flute, percussions, piano & vocals), French drummer Jean-Paul Prat presents an instrumental, powerful and symphonic work. The recurent themes are perfectly orchestrated and their many variations are full of melodic richness. The growing bass and brass instruments are close to Weidorje, but this music shows much more contrast and violent sequences follow quietest passages. After having revived the spirit of Masal though the self-named band in the year 2009, Jean-Paul Prat delivers nowadays a splendid piece of work. Ksiz/Nerve of War ....import CD $21.99
Feeling alone since Regency's demise? Here's something to dry your tears! Ksiz is a young band from Strasbourg, led by two virtuosos: guitarist Mathieu Spaeter and drummer Jimmy Pallagrosi. Supported by musicians as good as these two can be, the duet put all its talent and inspiration into a well-crafted instrumental piece of work, carrying the legacy of Dream Theater and Planet X. The progressive heavy-metal side isn't the only one here though. For instance, when the Fender Rhodes piano replaces the six-strings, one may think of Niacin. Add some violin parts here and there, and Jean-Luc Ponty seems to come back from the glorious seventies. Following the path of its predecessor, Ksiz strikes again with a second album named "Nerve Of War." The quality of the compositions is still top-notch, inspiration leads the way again, and instrumental prowess rules. This isn't by chance if the guest-list includes such names as Derek Sherinian (Dream Theater, Planet X), Tom Kennedy (Dave Weckl, Al Di Meola) or Christophe Godin (Morglbl, GNO). Let's also note that the album ends with a majestic nearly-twenty-minutes epic-track. No doubt about it, the French Liquid Tension Experiment of the XXIst Century is named Ksiz!
Barock Project/Coffee in Neukolln ....import CD $21.99
Barock Project is the name of an Italian progressive rock band, made of young but very experienced musicians. They are led by keyboardist virtuoso Luca Zabbini, who composed a concerto for piano and saxophone, a true sign of excellent musical abilities! Their project is described by themselves, "To spread the finest and perfect structure of classic music (mainly baroque music) with a rock style, and a little bit of jazz harmony, all supported by a pop song structure." During the composition process for its third album, Barock Project took the time to have a drink in one of Berlin's most famous quarters, to discuss the ravages made by history to this city divided for so long. The result of this happened to be an opus aptly titled "Coffee In Neukolln." Musically speaking, the listener will find himself at home, even if the symphonic side seems to slightly overcome the usual rock structure.

Electroclav is an electronic music French composer. Since childhood he has been passionate about synthesizers and computers. He has been inspired and initiated by Jean Michel Jarre, Vangelis and others artists of the current electro scene. Awenson, alias Joel Bernard, revivew the spirit of the innovative creations stemming from the electronic music in the Seventies. This French keyboards player was particularly influenced by Germany and the Berlin School. Hence it is no wonder if his album is reminiscent of the atmospheres created by Tangerine Dream or Klaus Schulze. It wouldn't be right to only see imitation there, and disregard the impact that the artist got from another one in the genre, namely Jean-Michel Jarre. Awenson draws a really personal music from all this, and it should delight the connoisseurs.
Amarok/Gouveia 2005 ....import CD $24.99
Amarok's style is quite different from the current Spanish progressive rock movement, thanks to their tone. Led by multi-instrumentalist Robert Santamaria, this mainly acoustic band uses a variety of instruments, like the guitar, oboe, violin, piano, didgeridoo, tabla, saxophone, organ, drums and percussions. Mireia Sisquella's clear voice creates sound-scapes characterised by their simplicity and calm, and this makes her the counterpart of Portuguese singer Teresa Salqueiro (Madredeus). This live album was performed in 2005 at the Portuguese Gouveia Art Rock Festival.

Progressive rock's very own One-Man-Army strikes again. Welcome to "Crimes And Reasons," the long-awaited fourth album by multi-instrumentalist and multi-genius Steve Thorne. Serge Bradacs is a new keyboards virtuoso from Switzerland. Heir of the neglected F.G. Experimental Laboratory, he is one more local representative of the genre, together with Krakatau or Aeryal. The Why Note Trio is the meeting of three musicians, the musical journey to a crossroads where jazz, contemporary music, traditional music and free improvisation meet. Far from the banal, where stereotypes invade the everyday world, Nagakanaya (a musical muse, well known in Asia) came out of a meeting between Fabrice Vanagar, the multi-instrumental composer, and Cerenya, the songwriter. Their musical universe is an eclectic blend, drawn from rock, pop, blues, Latino and vintage influences. The writing is based on human sensitivity. As for melodic side, it is like an organic firm, the instruments are not treated. It is on stage that the energy develops and penetrates the auditorium.
Q-Biq/Celeste ....import CD $21.99
Novelty prevails throughout the nine tracks of Q-biq's Celeste . Indeed, inventiveness appears to be the prime mover in this uncommonly-structured album. Without denying their early influences (e.g. "Return To Forever," "Headhunters," "Tribal Tech" ) Q-biq, here, make a sort of romantic breach which might reconcile fans of Scott Henderson with those of Frederic Chopin. While the title-track Racine was the lead-tune on the group's first album, the 3-part track, here, titled L'elephant, comes on top as the number likely to arouse marvel. As a majestic keystone, the lyricism of the vocals sung by Francoise Mazza is truly thrilling. Guitarist Julien Froment, after the fashion of one Brian May, delivers phrasings both high-pitched and ringing. It takes Antonin Neel's genius, on keyboards, to calm down that maelstrom fueled by a terrific rhythm section made up of Emmanuel Pastor on drums and of David Depassiot on bass. Though you may be enthralled by this number, the album's other tracks should by no means be second- rated . Let us mention, among other wonders: Frederic and its heart-rending outcome, as well as the raging Distorted Time, not forgetting Microcosm, a subtle and refined tune. In a more lively register, Agathe The Blues and Boogie Or Not Boogie will no doubt satisfy lovers of binary trips. The former is a tremendous, colourful display of riffs leading to some amazing architectural guitar breaks. As for the latter, it takes the listener into a blaze of white bubbling madness. Last but not least, Quarks, a kind of groovy ballad gradually developing into a feverish jam, remarkably demonstrates the Quartet's skill in combining melody elements with rich and unexpected harmonies.

Tee is a Japanese band, made of five musicians on keyboards, flute, guitar, bass and drums. Their second opus "Trans-Europe Expression" could have been a tribute to Kraftwerk, but the music featured here is quite different. The recipe of their first album has been kept and bettered, an instrumental brand of progressive jazz-rock fusion cooked with patience and talent. Together with his band, Generacion Cero, Rodolfo Mederos released two LP's in the mid-seventies. This here is the second of the albums in question, and is widely considered to be one of the best and most successful combinations of avant tango and progressive rock in history. These recordings feature nice touches of jazz, as well as clever incursions into psychedelic territory. This is a purely instrumental collection, which boasts Rodlfo's virtuous bandoneon playing and the outfit's beautiful and melancholic atmospheric passages.

Emmanuel Booz released three essential albums in the mid-Seventies, a unique mix of revolutionary poetry, songs and progressive rock. As an important character from the underground French scene, he was one of the first artists to write about ecology and about the impact of nuclear plants on nature. These themes are today more accurate than ever. The famous French critic Philippe Manoeuvre even wrote that his singing was one of the first rap attempts! "Le Jour Ou Les Vaches..." (1974), "Clochard" (1976) et "Dans Quel Etat J'Erre" (1978) are at last reissued thanks to Musea. Superb compositions with superb sound, always with feeling. In both cases, this music takes from contemporary composers (Stravinsky, Debussy), blending these influences with subtle touches coming from jazz or rock. It reminds sucessively of Julverne or Terpandre, but Noetra reveals a rare originality and charm. Seen from another angle, Noetra's music can be tense and harmful: let's imagine The Mahavishnu Orchestra without its typical angry outburst, but keeping that anguished rhythm guitar and that twirling violin.

Francois "Faton" Cahen and Francois Causse are friends since the seventies, around bands like Mamgm, Gong, Zao, Ethnic Trio, with Christian Vander, Didier Malherbe, Yochk'o Seffer and many more. After having played this music at the Satellit Cafe in Paris under the name of Don Faton, it was then recorded in 2010 in Francois Causse's studio in Massy, using the computer technology, without loosing the warmth of live music. No more preconceived ideas about style, but simply a process where each musician brings his ideas and feeling. Then, comes the selection of the best moments, which explains the title Amalgama, a word coming from classical arab language, which means fusion of metals. Tracks are build step by step, with generous unexpected guests, and this process takes some time. This is what is called fusion music.

Founded in 2003 on the ashes of ADN by Philippe Benabes and Didier Pegues, Eye 2 Eye finally released their third album on the Musea label. After "One In Every Crowd" (2006) and "After All..." (2009), nominated by the ProgAwards that same year, "The Wish" (2011) marks a watershed for the group that sign here its first concept-album, inspired by Oscar Wilde's "Picture Of Dorian Gray." Flor de Loto/Imperio de Cristal ....import CD $21.99
Flor de Loto is a present Peruvian progressive rock band, led by the flautist Johnny Perez. The outfit brillantly blends elements of seventies progressive rock with Andean music. This style is reminiscent of Jethro Tull, if Ian Anderson's band ever felt like emigrating to South America! Flute and guitar riffs are omnipresent, which enhances the charm of this elegant and joyful music. Released on the Musea and Mylodon labels as a co-venture in the year 2005, the first self-titled album shows a true achievement in the instrumental Progressive rock field. The second opus "Madre Tierra" (2007) forgets the all-instrumental formula, just the time of performing two titles sung in Spanish. A few interesting borrowings to celtic folk or heavy-metal are also noteworthy. Published in the year 2009, "Mundos Bizarros" goes even deeper into the dark side of the Peruvian band, for our greatest pleasure.

J: Joel Widmaier is Haiti's most respected jazz drummer and a connoisseur of Caribbean drum rhythms. A big fan of Weather Report, of guitarist Pat Metheny and of drums studio legend Steve Gadd, he knows well how to blend different kinds of music with Haitian rhythms and musical styles. P: Pascale Monier is a French classically-trained musician who studied piano and the semiclassical instrument "Ondes Martenot." She is also a bass and Chapman Stick player and a true admirer of composer Olivier Messiaen, of King Crimson's Tony Levin and of Van der Graaf's Peter Hammill. P: Poncho, Alfonso Medina is a Mexican classically trained guitarist and composer, but also a jazz, blues and rock fan. An enthusiast of Bach's works and of Prokofiev's harmony, he has been influenced by Rush, Pink Floyd and even Al Di Meola in his playing. In 2006 Pascale met Joel in Port-au-Prince, where she lived at the time. As she had played with Poncho previously in Mexico, the idea of inviting him for a series of concerts was proposed. So, they got together as a trio for a series of jazz performances in Haiti the same year. As soon as they started playing, they immediately understood each other and their concerts were an instant success. Therefore, they decided to compose new pieces and record an album together. For this purpose, most of their influences were brought in: jazzy pieces and melodic songs, heavy rock guitars and the delicacy of classicism, world music in the form of Haitian voodoo drums and Mexican pre-Hispanic ocarinas. What would they do with all these different styles? Well, "JPP" as pronounced in French ("jeepepay") is an expression in Haitian Creole that means "whatever will be, will be." The result was "Project One," a varied but still concise record, a blend of different styles and influences from three different countries by three different musicians in the same path.

The Samurai of Prog is a new group, named after Marco Bernard's nickname, an Italian settled in Finland. Obviously not having enough of being the editor of the Colossus fanzine, and regularly publishing, with the help of the Musea label, numerous projects paying a tribute to Progressive rock in all its incarnations, our man took his bass to perform a handful of mythical pieces: "The Lamia" (Genesis), "Starship Troopers" (Yes), "World Of Adventures" (The Flower Kings), "Assassing" (Marillion), "Gravita 9.81" (Arti + Mestieri), "Dogs" (Pink Floyd). A caprice? Far away from it, since Marco Bernard has been part of the Italian band Elektroshock at the end of the seventies. Let's also note that The Samurai of Prog is a real band, completed by drummer Kimmo Porsti (Mist Season) and singer Steve Unruh. Initially formed to play three dates at the 2010 Estonian Jazz Festival, Slow Electric is a collaborative project between the British song-writing team of Tim Bowness (No-Man) and Peter Chilvers (Brian Eno's current partner in sound, apps etc.), and the experimental Estonian duo UMA (Robert Jürjendal and Aleksei Saks). Using recordings from the concerts as a basis, Bowness recorded new vocals and Chilvers contributed additional keyboards and atmospherics. King Crimson's Tony Levin added some of his unique bass/chapman stick playing to selected tracks and the multi-tracks were subsequently mixed by ace Zurich-based percussionist/producer Andi Pupato (Nik Bartsch's Ronin). IZZ is a New York based band, and is frequently seen on the progressive rock festival circuit. Their name is taken from one of bassist John Galgano's favorite Mets players. Laborator is a trio of multi-instrumentists from the latest incarnation of Moving Gelatine Plates, one of the cult-bands of the French seventies progressive rock scene. Two albums were issued between 1970 and 1971, then bassist Didier Thibaut reunited the group for an opus under the name Moving in the year 1980. In the end, he reformed the band once again in 2006, to produce "Removing" on the Musea label. Today, Laborator presents its eponymous debut album, introducing a brand new music with various colours. Andre BALZER is none other than the lead singer of Atoll, one of the major acts of the French-speaking seventies progressive rock scene, along with Ange or Mona Lisa. Probably less considered than his alter-egoes Christian Decamps or Dominique Le Guennec, the singer from Metz was able to deliver an unmistakable theatrical sensibility, a unique personality and a remarkable voice though. The progressive rock audiences lost touch since the golden seventies, but here's Andre Balzer back in the year 2011! "Entre L'Alpha Et L'Omega - Opus Un" could be regarded as a concept album made of progressive rock songs exploring various themes, stuck by short narrations. And if the voice is no more the same as in the famous "L'Araignee-Mal," rockier and smoother at the same time, one might even have the illusion of hearing "Par Les Fils De Mandrin" here and there. The famous album by Ange, indeed... Andre Balzer has been helped here by some of the best musicians in north-east France, including Caroline Crozat and Alain Wittische. The progressive rock band Oneira has been formed in Italy by composer/guitarist and bass player Filippos Gougoumis in 2010. The current bandmembers are Erik Spedicato on drums, Giampaolo Begnoni on keys and Vincent King as guest vocalist. The debut album "Natural Prestige" contains 10 songs, out of which 4 are instrumental.The rest of the songs comes with deep emotional lyrics, dealing with goals to achieve in life, adventures in space, or the beauty of nature and the peace of the sea. For the making of the album Filippos teamed up with producer Oliver Philipps (Everon) and producer/engineer Christian "Moschus" Moos (Everon/Spacelab Studio). While Oliver arranged the songs and appears as special guest (keys, guitars, vocals), Moschus mixed the album and also did part of the recordings. The rest had been recorded in Italy already before Filippos came over to Germany to finish the album. The style of the music is progressive rock, with the focus on melodies and atmospheres, not on technical wizzardry. It may be best compared to the earlier works of bands such as Genesis or Yes, but may as well appeal to people who like bands like Rush, Styx or Journey.

Even with their names, these four musicians from Munich are making their picture of the world very clear: The combination between "Schizophrenia" and "Emotional rush," the brokenness between Chaos and Order, technical genius and released safety, are sensible with every single tone. That's why it is no surprise that Martin Mayrhoferr, head of the band, did not only cross ways with "superdrummer" Marco Minnemann, but did also walk together with the well-known jazz-metal band Panzerballett and of course got himself a more than versed band for his own project: keyboarder Markus Jehle (RPWL), as well as drummer Andy Lind (Acht, Lind...) are well known authorities in the music scene. For their studio debut, Schizofrantik did make a more than image-fitting theme their own: "Oddities" is dealing with the David Lynch classic "The Elephan Man" in which John Merrick, caught between Ausgrenzung and Akzeptanz, is standing in the eternal fight for humanity, which he is giving up at least. This critical concept album, based on a true story, is holding lots of space for several different emotional facets, expecially with the main character John Merrick: loneliness, otherness, as well as trust and musings are part of the story around "Oddities."

Stevegane Project reflects the musical vision of one French multi-instrumentist, who has worked closely with Ritchie Blackmore's touring crew. Don't expect Deep Purple's progressive hard-rock, powerful riffs ala Rainbow or medieval ambiences here, though. "When The Time Is A Present" is an excellent instrumental album, led by an electric guitar lyrical to the bone. It's impossible not to think of Mike Oldfield or David Gilmour, one might say Jean-Pascal Boffo or Minimum Vital. But don't be mistaken: those four long tracks (plus one 3 minutes-piece) appear to be original and catchy at the same time. Even programmed, the drums know how to be discreet and quirky at the same time, cleverly supporting this beautiful and quiet music.

Anima Mundi is a bunch of musicians from Cuba, who have chosen, at the end of the nineties, to play symphonic progressive rock music. It's certainly not the easiest place in the world to create and play this kind of music, so "Jagannath Orbit" in itself deserves attention: the band had to be really patient and brave to have a chance to release this second album. But even if this album was coming from England or Japan, you'd have seen no difference at all: it's just a brilliant symphonic rock, ambitious, played with passion, with a good production. English lyrics (and some guitar parts) reveal a certain Yes influence, together with the major masters of the seventies. The main thing about Anima Mundi is the absolute beauty of its melodies, from the first to the last second, coupled with a great sense of rhythm. You'll find of course plenty of gorgeous and bombastic keyboards parts, floating sounds and soli, lyrical guitar parts, a good singer, other instruments such as recorders, bagpipes, clarinet, didgeridoo. That music is constantly inspired, lively, and coming straight from the heart.

El Hombre Astral is the new project of Cesar Diez, bass player and founder of Rao Trio, one of the most eclectic musicians of the Castilla-Leon Spanish provinces. After many encounters as a producer and studio musician, he managed to get on with both skilful and inspired instrumentalists. First in the traditional progressive rock sphere of influence, the band's sound got harder towards complex progressive heavy-metal. Sung in Spanish, the nine songs tend to escape from the Dream Theater style, and are biased on a more personal and varied music, sometimes close to a certain sophisticated pop music, including some bright guitar soli and a few beautiful acoustic interludes.

Equilibrio Vital is a progressive rock band from Venezuela. The well-titled "Retorno" shows the band at its top, talented and inspired as before. The result are these nine tracks, worthy of the cream of the current South American scene. Timo Laine & Symphonic Slam/SSII ....import CD $21.99
Symphonic Slam made history, being the first band issuing, in the years 1976, a piece of work including synthesizer-guitars. Parallel to this, this self-titled opus has also been considered as a fine example of seventies progressive rock. There was a second album by the group, "SSII" (1978) that eventually saw the light of day again a decade later, courtesy of Musea again. Less renowned but deserving a lot more than this, this second attempt still highlights the instrument so dear to the leader Timo Laine. The name of the latter now apprears in the band's name, and his picture appears on the cover of the album as well. The group itself evolved according to the tracks, featuring several musicians, such as the famous bass player Jimmy Haslip (Alan Holdsworth, The Yellowjackets...) on three titles. Mostly instrumental, the disc sees the addition of four bonuses.

This American band, with its second album, "plays thoughtful rock with a furnished feel" --so they say. "Hoop of Flame" is made of two long musical suites (23 and 29 minutes). This Italian band is a project by Mauro Montobbio, a guitarist/keybpardist. Narrow Pass existed briefly in the eighties, had disappeared, and is back with a tremendous first album. Several musicians contribute to "A Room Of Fairy Queens," on drums and bass, but also on vocals (Valeria Caucino and Alessandro Corvaglia, the second one being the singer from LA MASCHERA DI CERA) and flute/sax/bagpipes (Edmondo Romano). Valeria and Edmondo were both part of the only album released by ERIS PLUVIA, a masterpiece from the nineties. And Narrow Pass sometimes recalls ERIS PLUVIA: an exquisite sensibility, pure and refined melodies, airy flute parts, a common CAMEL influence. But NARROW PASS also reveals some PINK FLOYD hints, and lyrical guitar solis not unlike MARILLION's first era. Don't miss this masterpiece, the second album is on its way!

Despite showing a passport not so common in the genre, Turkish band Nemrud develops an Anglo-Saxon type of progressive rock, of the highest quality. One might even be reminded of Eloy's "Ocean" opus... This is no surprise then to learn that the leader, Mert Gocay is a close friend of Frank Bornemann! "Journey To The Shaman" is a concept-album divided in three parts - The Ground, Underground, The Sky. Here's the initiation journey of the shaman, who needs to go underground first, to be able to eventually reach the sky. This rock symphony is mainly instrumental, as the lyrics are often used in a spoken and meditative way. It's a very sophisticated music, based on seventies sounds but with an excellent production. Floating keyboards sounds, guitar arpeggios and a sense of slowness obviously recall Eloy and Pink Floyd, but there are other influences, like Camel, Genesis, Jethro Tull.

A prolific multi-instrumentalist from the United States, Phideaux Xavier creates his own brand of polished modern progressive rock, sometimes sounding like Pink Floyd during the Roger Waters era. The artist published several albums on a short period of time during the years 2000, even making a name for himself on the present progressive rock scene. An ambitious trilogy started with "The Great Leap" (2006), then "Doomsday Afternoon" (2007), and "Number Seven" (2009) to conclude. If the second one here can be considered as the perfect meeting of The Beatles and Pink Floyd, its successor, displays a wider range of influences (Van der Graaf Generator, Mike Oldfield, Jethro Tull, Le Orme), without forgetting to emphasize a personality on its own. Here's a real achievement, as far as intimistic and polished Progressive rock is concerned!

It's the third album by this Venezuelian artist, guitar virtuoso, living in Miami. Raimundo Rodulfo released in 2000 and 2002 two critically acclaimed albums, "Dreams" and "The Dream Concerto." "Mare e Terra" is more than one step further, with contribution of South American prog stars like Carlos Plaza (leader of Kotobel), Pedro Castillo and Gerardo Ubieda (Tempano), among many others. Rodulfo uses here a chamber orchestra: violins, cello, flutes, sax, clarinet, trumpets, etc., added to usual the rock band, with male and female vocals. Two suites divided in two parts compose these 75 minutes of a fantastic symphonic and neo-classic rock, melodious and adventurous. Rodulfo's guitar playing is reminiscent of Steve Howe (Yes), and is combined with seventies orientated keyboards (including mini-moog), and groovy rhythms, revealing hints of Latin traditional music. This colourful and enthusiast music, constantly inspired and lively, is at the top of the today's symphonic production.

This legendary musician has achieved a sucessful musical career since the Magma days, with ZAO, NEFFESH MUSIC, etc. His unique musical style is a sort of ethnic jazz, influenced by Hungarian music and American music (Coltrane), among others. "My old roots" is a collection of pieces from 1976 and 1980, created with Neffesh Music and for "Chromophonie." Some pieces were never released on CD, and one is an unreleased track, recorded in 2005 with violin player Lajos Horvath. It's an excellent introduction to Seffer's lively, inventive and colourful music. Just brilliant!

In order to develop further a very personal style of music performance and after having left Zao, Yochk'o Seffer founded Neffesh Music ("Soul's Music") in 1976. Created thanks to jazz and rock as well as Hungarian roots, this original band is made of the rhythm section Dominique Bertram (bass) and Francois Laizeau (drums). Apart from them, we can also find the famous Quatuor Margand to complete the band. Yochk'o Seffer Neffesh Music recorded three albums: after "Delire" in 1976 and "Ima" in 1977, "Ghilgoul" finally closed that chapter in 1978. Three decades later, Neffesh Music is back on track with "Ezz-Thetics Travel" and "Noce Chimque." Here's a contemporary music that combines a jazz pulse with the influences of classical composers like Stravinsky, Debussy and Bartok. Without mentioning the modern and urban sounds of the DJ. It's kind of a classical contemporary music, never heard before, and quite fascinating.

In the late Sixties, EKSEPTION and Rick Van Der LINDEN were among the first musicians to create a blend of musical styles that went from classical music to pop and jazz. Extremely popular thanks to its instrumental covers of Ludwig Van BEETHOVEN ("The Fifth") and Aram KHATSATURJAN ("Sabre Dance"), the Dutch line-up was replaced by TRACE in the year 1974. This new band followed in the path taken by EKSEPTION, becoming thus a Progressive rock power-trio led by the keyboards of its virtuoso leader. A serious counterpart to EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER! "An Ekseptional Trace" includes a previously unreleased live recording of TRACE in 1977, with Ian MOSLEY, future co-founder of MARILLION on drums. The Finnish magazine Colossus asked thirty (yes, thirty) progressive bands, from all over the world, to illustrate moments of "Kalevala." Kalevala is the Finnish national epic, made of old Finnish ballads and lyrical songs, a complex and diverse cycle of legends which inspired Tolkien as well as the composer Sibelius, among many others. The idea of the project was to use original, "vintage" instruments of the seventies, to get the "old" feeling needed by the story. And, by the way, no programmed drums.
