The Classics of the Future
Musea is a 10-year old non-profit record label dedicated to the promotion of Progressive Rock. This style of music was made popular in the 70's by bands such as Genesis, Yes, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Van der Graaf Generator, Magma, Ange, and many others. However, the rough rules of the market and the lack of media support led Progressive music to lose favor by the late 70's.
Despite this public desertion throughout the 80's and 90's, artists from around the whole world perpetuate this aesthetic. Opposed to rigid formulae, Progressive music mixes Rock with elements from other horizons such as classical music (Yes, Genesis, ELP), jazz (Soft Machine, Caravan), electronic music (Heldon, Tangerine Dream), world music (Peter Gabriel) and many more.
During these last two decades, many artists have released masterpieces of great interest; but due to media disinterest, these gems have not yet reached the music lover's ears. The realization of this problem led to the founding of Musea. For many years, a crew of volunteers has participated in this adventure with no other aim than that of sharing the huge pleasure they feel while listening to these unknown treasures. With its production of hundreds of records (original releases and reissues) , Musea offers any open-minded listener bored with commercial music imposed by a media ruled by money, a collection of gems that lead to new and exciting musical horizons.
Amarok/Canciones De Los Mundos Perdidos ....import CD $18.99
Amarok's style is quite different from the current Spanish Progressive rock movement, thanks to their tone. Led by multi-instrumentalist Robert Santamaria, this mainly acoustic band uses a variety of instruments, like the guitar, oboe, violin, piano, didgeridoo, tabla, saxophone, organ, drums and percussions. Mireia Sisquella's clear voice creates sound-scapes characterised by their simplicity and calm, and this makes her the counterpart of Portuguese singer Teresa Salgueiro (Madredeus). Some keyboards rhythm sequences are the basis for the superb melodies pictured by the vocals, in a peaceful atmosphere between Enya's acoustic new-age, L'Ensemble Raye's minimalist chamber rock and In the Labyrinth's ethnic musics (apart from the Indian references).
Etron Fou Leloublan/Face Aux Elements Dechaines ....import CD $18.99
This is the last EFL album, recorded in 1985 and produced by Fred Frith. The band adopted the trio formula from the beginnings, with F. Richard (bass, vocals), Jo Thirion (organ, vocals) and G. Chenevier (sax, drums, vocals). "Face aux Elements dechaines" is probably the album in which EFL perfectly keeps the balance between structured compositions and sense of delirium and fantasy. The lyrics remain full of humour, but less carefree. The music offers the same pulsating energy, based on structured keyboards, theatrical vocals, and humourous sax parts. Perfectly produced, perfectly composed and played, "Face aux Elements Dechaines" is a milestone in French post-RIO rock history.
Rael/Mascaras Urbanas (digisleeve) ....import CD $24.99
What a divine surprise this Argentinian band from the Nineties is! Driven by keyboards player Horacio Pozzo, Rael's one and only album displays a music which could be regarded as "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway - Volume Two!" Not a real surprise, considering its name. All caracteristic elements from Genesis' music from the best era are here: a very Gabriel-like voice, acoustic guitar arpeggios, keyboards, great inspiration. Nothing is missing, except the fact that the chosen tongue is Spanish, instead of English!
Adrian Zarate/De La A A La Z ....import CD $18.99
Drummer and composer Adrian Zarate's debut album. Adrian is a member of the Mexican Symphonic Progressive Rock band Saena. This album shows a different musical approach than Saena, and it's more into RIO and complex progressive music, not unlike Daniel Denis' "Les Eaux Troubles" and especially influenced by the Terry Bozzio's Zappa. I must admit I found some Hector Zazou's early works echoes, not to mention a weird version of "Geen Leaves." You may file this one under 21st Century chamber rock.
Lost World/Sound Source ....import CD $18.99
This Russian band releases its third album "Sound Source." Unusual line-up: violin-guitars/drums/flute/keyboards. Unusual music too: this is a sort of dynamic instrumental chamber music, mixing classical influences (Vivaldi among others) and progressive ones - let's think of Kansas, UK, KBB, for the energy and the lively violin parts, but with a strong musical identity. These 16 concise instrumental tracks reveal technical skill, a huge musical culture, and a search for authentic sounds (including original sounds of nature). After "Awakening of the Elements." released by Musea in 2006, "Sound Source" proves once more that this band is among the best progressive outfits today, sincere and constantly inspired by a true love of music.
Qantum/Les Temps Oubliés ....import CD $18.99
Qantum is a French band, initially composed by musicians from Ultime Atome and Lapsus Languae. The band's first album, "Les temps oublies", is inspired by the golden age of French progressive music (Ange, Mona Lisa, etc), with also some influences of Genesis and common points with early Marillion or Galaad. Romantic lyrics (French), theatrical singing, lively dialogues between guitars and keyboards, compose a nice, sincere music, full of contrasts, worked out melodies and dreamy atmospheres, enhanced by Thierry Moreau's beautiful artwork.
Raphael Montechiari Project/How Was The Future? ....import CD $18.99
After having been involved in several Brazilian bands from various musical backgrounds, Raphael Montechiari recorded his first album in the year 2009. Jointly published by the Musea and Rock Symphony labels, "How Was The Future?" logically gives plenty of space for his beloved intrument: the keyboards. But this would be unfair not to mention the fact that Raphael Montechiari Project is supposed to be a real band. One could even say that the twelve tracks here show a remarkable team spirit. Musically speaking, we're most of the time getting away from the traditional Seventies symphonic music dear to the South-American School, to join the ranks of the best current progressive rock trend. The lyrics sung (In English) by Guilherme Rael surprisingly tend to sound not unlike the excellent Sebastian Harnack (Sylvan), as evidenced in the song "Delayed." But as you could never escape from your origins, the influences from Emerson Lake & Palmer or Pink Floyd are still around.
Amnesiac Quartet/Tribute To Radiohead ....import CD $18.99
Established in 2006, Amnesiac Quartet is the only group dedicated solely to the music of the English Radiohead. Formed in 1981, Nathan Mahl are a Canadian Progressive rock band with jazz fusion elements. Throughout a constantly evolving lineup of possibly some of the finest rock and fusion musicians from the Ottawa and Gatineau regions, keyboardist Guy LeBlanc is widely regarded as the essence and constant of the band. Guy appears to be more widely known as the keyboardist for progressive rock legends Camel from 2000 to 2003. Recording and touring resulted in a Nod and a Wink and The Paris Collection (Live).

The power-trio Ars Nova (keyboards, bass & drums) can be seen as the female answer to Gerard, another emblematic band of the Japanese progressive rock scene. Both of them actually pay tribute to the great bands of the Seventies, from Emerson Lake & Palmer to Trace, from classical music to Banco del Mutuo Soccorso. "Seventh Hell" may well put the listener on cloud nine, especially for those fond of vintage keyboards. You can trust Keiko Kumagai to provide loads of authentic seventies sounds. Here are five long pieces in the grand arsnovian tradition, including one 17 minutes-long suite, "Salvador Syndrome." The latter is here to honour a tradition made famous by the Musea label: a specific bonus-track for the european version. Let's also mention a couple of guest-stars, such as Hungarian guitar-player Zoltan Fabian (Age of Nemesis) and Dutch keyboardist Robby Valentine.

The Musea label and the Finnish magazine Colossus endlessly continue their quest for the greatest universal themes, in order to complete their collection of concept-albums dedicated to progressive rock. The hero of the day is Dante, the famous medieval author from Firenze who wrote "The Divine Comedy." That's precisely this epic piece of work, without a doubt one of the greatest books of all times, that serves as the basis for this new project. And of course, it has been divided in three parts: Inferno, Purgatorio and Paradiso. T.Phan is the new project of Stephan Caussarieu, the drummer from Tai Phong. Those are two names sounding similar, and it's certainly not by chance! For those who don't know, this French band from the second half of the Seventies, apart from having revealed great artists such as Jean-Jacques Goldman (one of the most respected singer-songwriters in France) and Welsh guitarist Michael Jones, made a huge hit with "Sister Jane." But this wouldn't be fair not to mention that this major group knew how to create quality melodic rock, sung in English, not so far away from the progressive rock standards set by Yes or Pink Floyd. Thirty years later, T.Phan took what's needed to continue the story, with an album named "Last Warrior." Published on the Musea label, it will surely delight the fans from the beginning, as well as gaining new ones. Here you're going to find great melodies, some beautiful guitar solos, a tasty jazz-rock fusion touch, a couple of catchy lines here and there, splendid instrumental parts. And surprisingly enough, you'll also find experimental sequences, showcasing the dark side of the band.
Ovale/Slalom ....import CD $18.99
Ovale is a French band located in Strasbourg, that was formed in 2001 and which is led by saxophonist Pierre Michel (Bise du Buse). Essentially based on dialogues between brass instruments, this outfit likes to blend different musical ways, that converge while remaining autonomous, generally renouncing comfort and straightforwardness. Jazz? Rock? Improvised music? Maybe a bit of all this in "Slalom," first album by these five musicians released on the Gazul label. So here are fourteen instrumental tracks of variable construction and inspiration. One can particularly note "Dodecafeine," a wink to Arnold Schoenberg's dodecaphonism, present in a slightly different version in "Joue Sa Musique," sole album by Bise du Buse.
Neverness/The Measure Of Time ....import CD $18.99
Neverness is a Spanish band created in 1998, clearly influenced by the progressive rock and hard-rock music of the seventies (King Crimson, Deep Purple or Pink Floyd, amongst others), with also some psychedelic hints, and including a taste for semi-improvised sequences. Here you have a powerful and contrasted music, full of tension, with acid and numerous, often heavy, guitar parts on the foreground. In the Spanish contemporary scene, Neverness has something very special and organic in the sound, not unlike some South American bands. An excellent, genuine work, "The Measure Of Time" is certainely not intended to change Neverness' universe. That said, this third album marks a certain evolution, with compositions much more personal and mature. Mostly instrumental, the six long titles are also reinforced by the inclusion of English lyrics.
Iconoclasta/Resurreccion ....import CD $18.99
This band performs from their first albums onwards, a really structured music which includes many themes, breaks and changes of rhythms and climates. It is elegant and ardent at the same time, due to the complex melodies and subtle and sometimes angry combinations, which developpe in furious crescendos between guitar and keyboards. The title of this opus, "Resurreccion," clearly shows the new stages encountered by the band, still centered around guitarists Roberto Moreno and Ricardo Ortegon, as well as drummer Victor Baldovinos. The two new members add a female touch to the team: bassist-singer Greta Silva and singer Alma Castillo. Jointly published by the Musea and Luna Negra labels, "Resurreccion" will surely please the aficionados of the South-American school's precious symphonism.
Delta Red/Gama de Espectros ....import CD $18.99
Delta Red is a progressive jazz-rock "power-trio" coming from the city of Queretaro, Mexico. The musicians' unconventional concept rises from collective improvisations where their influences converge: from classic Progressive rock to King Crimson's "Red" era to Don Caballero or Mr. Bungle-like math-rock. The first album "Gama De Espectros," a co-production between the Musea and Luna Negra labels, will please all fans of sophisticated progressive rock music, jazz-rock lovers and real alternative music from the twenty-first Century. If you're into Japan's Baraka or the Chilean revelation Tryo, you should try this as soon as possible!
Acanthe/Someone Somewhere ....import CD $18.99
From the beginning, one of Musea's missions has been to re-release major French progressive rock albums from the seventies. We've been proud to create digital versions of Atoll, Mona Lisa, Ange, together with more obscure - but talented - bands. A lot of others existed in the seventies, composed and performed live, without leaving any recorded trace. Acanthe existed from 1973 to 1977, and some tapes of the band's music were recently re-discovered, leading, after a lot of re-working effort, to "Someone Somewhere." This release is kind of a miracle for every French prog' and seventies lover: Acanthe's music, although never released before, easily takes place among the best French bands of this period. It reveals influences from Pink Floye, Genesis, King Crimson, Ange, the Doors (some organ parts especially), but offers a personal music, mixing instrumental and sung (in English or French) sequences. Well played, refined and worked-out, with beautiful guitar solis and suggestive keyboards, "Someone Somewhere" is intense, full of musical ideas and inspiration.

Ageness performs a music in the same tradition as that of Genesis ("The Musical Box" era), without plagiarism or copy. The band simply assimilated what the essence and strength of this music was, the sounds and voices that made it characteristic, and gave it a surprising rebirth, largely influenced by Marillions neo progressive rock. This fourth album has everything to become one of the revelations of the year. The music integrates the spirit (and the voice!) of Peter Gabriel's band when they were at their best, and follow the same musical path that they abandoned.

Led by Quebec born bassist-composer Antoine Fafard, Spaced Out proves to be an excellent modern progressive jazz-rock combo. The five musicians that participated to the recording of the eponymous album in 2000 all show a great talent as musicians and an unbreakable cohesion. As for Mathieu Bouchard's guitar, it definitely evokes the great Allan Holdsworth! As for Robert Fripp, he wasn't forgotten at all! The change of millenium was probably a revelation for our nice Canadians, who did an "Eponymus II" as wonderfully interpreted as the first one, but that also has the brandmark of the best Magma!!!

It's the End is an instrumental project made up of three musicians based in Oslo, Norway. Having worked together on several other projects, ranging from heavy-metal to jazz to classical music over a few years, the guys have also been writing stuff on the side. Stuff that later was to become part of the current band's repertoire. It comprises a unique new blend of progressive rock, heavy-metal, jazz-rock fusion, electronica and free improvisation. The self-titled instrumental album is a good mix of Frank Zappa, Mr. Bungle, Allan Holdsworth, Chick Corea, Meshuggah, King Crimson, Farmers Market, Supersilent and Gong.. And why not add a touch of Mats-Morgan here and there?!?

Canadian band Direction was formed in 2002. After 3 albums released independently, the band signed and released the album Est in 2008 on the Unicorn Digital Label. The music of Direation is a blend of each member's influences: Rush, Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Styx, Led Zeppelin and other great music from the 70's. Direction is not slave to its influences and delivers a true and honest progressive rock sound. The French lyrics tell a story where fiction and reality meet.

A prolific multi- instrumentalist from the United States, Phideaux Xavier creates his own brand of polished modern progressive rock, sometimes sounding like Pink Floyd. The artist published several albums on a short period of time during the years 2000, including an ambitious trilogy starting with "The Great Leap" and continuing with "Doomsday Afternoon" and "Number Seven."
Echo Us/The Tide Decides ....import CD $18.99
It's the second album by this American band, created in 2001 by Ethan (ex Greyhaven). It took four years to achieve "The Tide Decides," but the result is more than satisfying. This concept album reveals a strong personal style, mixing electronic music with progressive one. Helped by guests on harp, viola, bass and drums, Ethan has composed an ethereal, dreamy music. The concept deals with one person's life linked with the life of Earth; as the band mentions it, it's a "metaphysical approach to music with fantasy." Ethan's voice is close to Frankie Goes to Hollywood, but the musical style is kind of electro/synth/contemplative stuff. The atmospheres, sounds and vocals with effects sometimes recall Mike Oldfield’s "Songs from Distant Earth," with a more dynamic approach on rhythms; the music also recalls Vangelis.
Ancient Vision/Lost At Sea ....import CD $18.99
This American band had released two albums during the early nineties, and then disappeared for fifteen years! Its resurrection, with the original line-up, allowed the recording of "Lost at Sea," a concept album about a short story included in the booklet with the lyrics. It deals with mankind's story, contemporary confusion and struggle for power, through religions or political action. ANCIENT VISION was originally influenced by JETHRO TULL, Tom Hook's vocals reminding one of Ian Anderson with a more grave tone. "Lost At Sea," a symphony made of four parts and eight pieces, is much more eclectic and diverse, although strictly based on symphonic structures and arrangements. The music remains faithful to the seventies inspiration, with grandiose and suggestive analog keyboards, great keyboards/guitars interplay, intense acoustic moments, rockier parts here and there. It also includes refreshing parts with female vocals, sax, balalaika. Carefully composed and played, "Lost at Sea" is a beautiful modern symphony.
Anekdoten/A Time Of Day ....import CD $18.99
Some four years after the previous album, here is finally ANEKDOTEN's fifth opus. It was worth waiting for! "A Time Of Day" seems to come back to the sound, energy and ambition of the beginnings, offering as an overture a double swig of Mellotron plus a few well inspired schizoid riffs. However, those who prefer up-to-date and mainstream sounds are not forgotten either. The presence of a flautist, guest on the second track "30 Pieces," bringing about a welcome wind of freshness, should also be noted.
Apogee/Mystery Remains ....import CD $18.99
Apogee is the solo project by Arne Schafer, guitarist and singer in the German band Versus X, probably the best German progressive band nowadays. On this fourth album Arne is helped by Uwe Vollmar and Thomas Reiner, former and current drummer of Versus X. These experienced and talented musicians play an ambitious symphonic progressive music. If the influences of King Crimson, Van der Graaf Generator and Peter Hammill are still there, the music has become more personal, in a more meditative and contemplative way sometimes, and with a more melodic approach. Five long pieces (9 to 20 minutes) confirm one more time Arne's taste for complex musical structures. "Mystery Remains" is an excellent symphonic album, sophisticated and intelligent.
Ars Nova/Chrysalis - Force For The Fourth ....import CD $18.99
Well known since more than a decade among the prog listeners, this Japanese progressive band has released numerous albums, always driven by composer and keyboardist (virtuoso!) Keiko Kumagai. "Chrysalis" offers six pieces taken from their albums, recorded live in studio–without audience- with a guitarist added to the rhythm section. These six pieces are, in a way, re-created here with much more power and dynamism: fierce guitar chords, lively and bombastic keyboards, a deep bass sound, and 'metal' drumming: brilliant!
Didier Bardin/Le Pouvoir Des Pierres ....import CD $18.99
French keyboard player and composer Didier BARDIN is a Musicology graduate from Paris' famous Sorbonne University. The conception of his project "Le Pouvoir Des Pierres" originates from a question: is it possible to create a soothing and beneficial music, while varied and interesting? One first work concerned the discoveries of Professor Lee BARTEL, of Toronto University. His searches reveal the direct effect of certain frequencies on the production of alpha, beta and delta cerebral waves. They also show the action of certain rhythms on the respiratory and cardiac cycle. The symbolism of certain minerals, as well as their vibratory properties, appearead as an appropriate concept, while proposing a readability which is largely accessible to the listener. The five years of work that this project took enabled to overlap closely these different aspects, the creation of specific tonal sonic textures supposing a melodic and harmonic writing of the "tension/expansion" type. Nevertheless, the artist had to propose a pleasant and harmonious music, readily accessible, leaving the listener with the liberty to choose his own listening and attention level.
Baroque/La Fiaba della Buonanotte ....import CD $18.99
This is a new band from Torino, Italy, well-known in the area for its devastating shows! It’s a powerful rock band with elements of progressive music, influenced by Queen (first albums), David Bowie, Queen of the Stone Age, and also classical composers (Bach, Vivaldo, ect.). Here are thirteen songs and instrumental pieces full of dynamism, fantasy and energy, made of powerful riffs, diverse and syncopated rythms, sometimes near A.C.T., enhanced by discrete but colourful keyboards and Italian singing. BAROQUE is an excellent rock band with progressive elements, inspired and juicy, full of a contagious energy.

As a true legend of the electric bass, Jeff Berlin is often viewed as the best instrumentalist of his generation. He was revealed through the jazz-rock fusion movement during the second half of the Seventies, notably playing in a trio with drummer Tony Williams and guitarist Allan Holdsworth. The latter made him acquainted with a certain Bill Bruford, with whom he then formed one of the most accurate rhythm sections ever heard. The list of stars that invited Jeff Berlin would be much too long, but let's quote only Al Di Meola, Patrick Moraz, Randy Brecker, John McLaughlin, ABWH, Billy Cobham.... Along with this extreme activity, this American musician pursues a discreet solo carrier, celebrating an instrumental smart and distinguished jazz-rock fusion, deprived of any free demonstration of virtuosity. The two latest releases to date were published through M.A.J. Records, the artist's own record company: "Lumpy Jazz" (2004) and "Aneurhythms" (2006). Renamed "Ace Of Bass" in Japan, the latter album includes ten tracks lasting a bit more than an hour. Jeff Berlin had to find instrumentalists able to cope with the demands: this happened through the presence of drummer Vinnie Colaiuta.
Jean Pascal Boffo/La Boite a Musique ....import CD $18.99
It's the ninth solo album by this French guitarist, different from its predecessors as usual. His first album "Jeux de nains" was the first to be released by the Musea label in 1985. "JPB" is the guitarist from the band ALIFAIR, and also a renowned sound engineer. Every new album he composes and plays is a complete renewal, and he seems to have played every possible style from jazz to rock and symphonic music, in a personal way. "La boite a musique" is a collection of twelve instrumental pieces for acoustic guitar. It's delicate, refined, nostalgic, full of sensibility and emotion, highly suggestive: just beautiful.
Cabezas de Cera/Hecho En Mexico ....import CD $18.99
CABEZAS DE CERA, a current Mexican trio, presents an exciting mixture of Progressive Rock. Mixing together influences from jazz-rock, Rock In Opposition and world music. The musicians themselves cite several varied sources including KING CRIMSON, Dave MATTHEWS BAND, Miles DAVIS, John COLTRANCE and Pat METHENY. The group proposes to give its audience a truly personal sound which cannot be confused with that of any other group.

CAGE is an Italian progressive rock band, led by keyboards player Alessandro Bugliani, born in the mid '80s. The five musicians have perfectly assimilated the lessons of ELP, Genesis, IQ, Gentle Giant and so on, whilst opting for a very modern approach, as far as the sound and the composition work is concerned. The emotional range is quite wide, from The Flower Kings' luminous guitar soli to ambiences not unlike Van der Graaf Generator. After an introductory track showing influences of a light jazz-rock, not unlike Kenso, the delicate and refined symphonic progressive rock comes back to the front. Mostly instrumental, it also leaves space to the vocals, more gabrielish than Peter Gabrial himself, courtesy of the band's new singer. The second track "The Scream" might even let you think that you're listening to a brand new composition by The Watch. Let's also note beautiful guitar parts, lyrical to the bone, mixing the styles of Steve Hackett, Allan Holdsworth or even Pat Metheny.
Cast/Originallis ....import CD $18.99
As steady as a click, CAST carries on making albums, so regularly that you have the feeling the Mexican band has always been a part of the progressive rock scene. It even could have been so, if only a lack of funds had not forced them to wait twenty years until they could release their works. At least, since the band's birth in the Seventies, it had time to polish up its music! In a way similar to The Flower Kings, Cast loves multiplying the releases and alternating single and double-albums. This time, the twin-edition has been favoured. And the motto "Excellent symphonic Progressive rock album" has been kept. A quality trademark still shining south of the Rio Grande.

Eddy GRANDJEAN is a young musician from the north-east of France, graduated from the prestigious Music Academy International located in Nancy. Yngve Guddal and Roger T.Matte are two norwegian keyboard virtuosos who create a musical event three years ago: they rearranged GENESIS classics for two grand pianos. Paul Whitehead, who realized the most famous Genesis cover paintings through the years, created 'Escape from New-York' for this release. This is a brand new Swedish band, existing since 2004. KLOTET is a quartet (drums/organ and keyboards/bass/guitars) which plays an instrumental progressive rock. These 14 pièces are concise, but full of a very special flavour. Based on the organ/Rhodes sounds, the atmosphères recall the early seventies, especially according to the band itself - the Swedish bands at that time, and musicians like BO HANSSON. It's a very dynamic and lively music, sometimes even frantic, with melodies typical of the Scandinavian touch we all appreciate in progressive rock. Including some unquiet harmonies alla KING CRIMSON, KLOTET's music is enhanced by a roaming bass, and played with a constant enthusiasm. An excellent and really original album.

The third album by this Russian band, "Return" was released by Musea in 2005. It offered a gorgeous neo-classic progressive rock ala ELP, with bombastic keyboards. "The Sixth Sense" reveals a great improvement, and an eclectic inspiration: the music recalls E.L.P, but also Genesis, Pink Floyd, Camel and Focus. It's a subtle mix of neo-classical music, rock, jazz, with some hints of metal on guitar solis. The composer and keyboardist G.Ilyin uses seventies keyboards, and offers nice and lively piano parts. Russian singing is to notice, but the music is mainly instrumental, played with a real technical skill and well produced. An excellent album.

LOST WORLD is a musical trio, and its musicians come from RUSSIA. They created the band ten years ago, as they were students in the musical conservatory of Moscow, and already released an album in 2001. The three of them are virtuosos, Vassily Soloviev on flute and percussion, the composer A.Didorenko on guitars and violins, A.Akimov on keyboards, percussion and programming. These twelve instrumental pieces reveal a very high musical level, a very dynamic and lively music, with incredible violin parts, frantic but not heavy rythms, suggestive melodies. Due to these elements it may recall here or there UK or KANSAS, but this music is absolutely personal, influenced by classical composers and progressive music.

This American band, with its second album, "plays thoughtful rock with a furnished feel" --so they say. "Hoop of Flame" is made of two long musical suites (23 and 29 minutes). MIND FURNITURE's musical identity is personal, even if it recalls seventies bands like KANSAS, JETHRO TULL, RUSH, STYX and neo-progressive music, especially MARILLION for the lyrical guitar solis. It's well structured (five parts for each suite), very diverse in the inspiration, with elaborate arrangements that keep very well the balance between keyboards and guitars. It combines philosophical and metaphysical lyrics with a dynamic feeling and positive vibrations. Let's mention nice vocal parts, sometimes near IAN ANDERSON, and beautiful, intense solis. It took six years for this Italian band to compose and create "Little Enchanted Void," and it was worth waiting! "Little Enchanted Void" is a concept album in which a creature of light is travelling from chaos to purity - should we say "from genesis to revelation?" "Little enchanted void" is structured in an unusual way (26 short musical fragments linked to each other, in an impressionistic manner), and the music is gorgeous: additional players offer violin, oboe, viola, cello. It's a brand new chamber symphonic music: the musicians use acoustic sequences –especially delicate piano parts - electric ones, neo-classic, ambient and electro. It sometimes recalls the spirit of Anthony Phillips or Peter Gabriel, but most of the time it's just Mindflower! Melodious and worked out, this precious music haunted by airy strings and soft vocals was partly recorded in Real World studios, and mastered in Abbey Road studios: a brilliant and secret music, revealing its treasures after several listenings.

Is it a coincidence if the name of MIRAGE, a French current Progressive rock band, is also the one of one of the most famous albums of CAMEL? Some serious clues were already given in their first opus "A Secret Place," released in 2001 under the Musea label. If that was still not enough, "Tales From The Green Sofa" (2004) would definitely take all doubts away! Beyond the obvious link between them, these two pieces of work reveal above all the intelligence of musicians who try to recapture the inspiration of the Seventies British Progressive rock legend. The fluid guitar riffs, the delightful Hammond organ parts and the bewitching flute are of course there, and all the songs are well interpretated, with a lot of personality. The lyrics (In English) are modern, existential or inspired by science-fiction themes. They reveal a permanent desire of going deeper into the reflection. If the first effort by MIRAGE has allowed to build a reputation, the second one obviously strenghthens professionalism and talent. Carrying the flame of the lyric symphonism dear to Andy LATIMER and his disciples, it is sure that this group has a great potential for the future... This new opus named "Borderline" follows the magic musical trip driven by both previous ones and promises good vibes for all fans of early Camel’s era!

Yes fans will recognize the name of Tim Morse as the author of the book 'Yesstories' featuring in depth interviews with all members of the band past and present. His obvious love of Yes can be found in his debut CD as well. "Transformation" is a masterpiece of Progressive rock, combining the musical experimentations of the Seventies with modern production techniques and virtuoso performances. This Italian band is a project by Mauro Montobbio, a guitarist/keybpardist. Narrow Pass existed briefly in the eighties, had disappeared, and is back with a tremendous first album. Several musicians contribute to "A Room Of Fairy Queens," on drums and bass, but also on vocals (Valeria Caucino and Alessandro Corvaglia, the second one being the singer from LA MASCHERA DI CERA) and flute/sax/bagpipes (Edmondo Romano). Valeria and Edmondo were both part of the only album released by ERIS PLUVIA, a masterpiece from the nineties. And Narrow Pass sometimes recalls ERIS PLUVIA: an exquisite sensibility, pure and refined melodies, airy flute parts, a common CAMEL influence. But NARROW PASS also reveals some PINK FLOYD hints, and lyrical guitar solis not unlike MARILLION's first era. Don't miss this masterpiece, the second album is on its way!

Here is something really special: a truly original progressive rock band. It's the second album by this Finnish combo, and its musicians are all about 25 years old: you'll hear about them! Metaepitome is composed by six complex pieces, two of them are real progressive suites (15/20 minutes long). You hear some remaining influences like Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Rush, Marillion, Dream Theater during this hour of pure progressive music, mixed with some strange psyche/electro sequences, and powerful metal moments. But you certainly hear seventies keyboard sounds, melodious, lively bass parts, nice flute solis, good vocals, and an excellent guitar player, initially influenced by Satriani/Vai, but who developed a personal playing, eclectic and surprising. Brilliant!

Jean-Luc PAYSSAN created with his twin brother Thierry the famous french band MINIMUM VITAL, twenty years ago. They found a new musical language, mixing jazz-rock, classical, progressive and Middle-Ages music. His first solo album is not a solitary effort: VITAL's keyboards and female vocals are present here with Sonia NEDELEC and Thierry PAYSSAN, together with B.Millon's violin. Jean-Luc plays classical and acoustic guitar, but also theorbo, mandola, cittern, mandolin. These 14 musical short pieces are based on magnificent melodies, it's a very pure music, timeless and personal. Unlike most of the guitarist albums, often self-indulgent and repetitive, it's brilliant and humble in the same time, all the pieces are different for atmospheres, arrangements, melodies, revealing eclectism and a huge musical culture: a wonderful music.

"Alone Together" is a very coherent album packed with masterfully combined, excellent ideas. It's plain to hear that these guys simply enjoy playing together. Apart from the beautiful ballads, like the opening track called "different" with an enchanting melody played on xaphoon (also known as 'pocket sax' or 'bamboo flute') or "we are alone together", an ambient-like composition permeated with emotions, you can expect a hefty amount of rock riffs, breathtaking solos, remarkable work of the rhythm section and that ever so wonderfully sounding flute. There are also a few really incredible surprises... Since "Alone Together" is a concept album, it is worthwhile paying attention to the lyrics and the track titles, which ingeniously form one sentence that describes the content of the record. It talks about different kinds of loneliness and estrangement, about being "alone together" in various sorts of relationships - with a friend, a partner, and the family... Bartek, the vocalist, has certainly found his place in the band and gives a truly heartfelt rendition of the lyrics. His voice conveys a whole range of emotions - melancholy, longing, a lot of passion and even a dash of irony... The new release comes with great artwork - the cover featuring a picture by Michal Florczak superbly matches the content of the album. "Alone Together" is simply perfect and the band is obviously in great shape. They present on this album the best of what they have to offer and, at the same time, what their fans love them for - splendid melodies and lush arrangements. It is an invitation on a wondrous journey into the land of imagination.
Raimundo Rodulfo/Mare Et Terra ....import CD $19.99
It's the third album by this Venezuelian artist, guitar virtuoso, living in Miami. Raimundo Rodulfo released in 2000 and 2002 two critically acclaimed albums, "Dreams" and "The Dream Concerto." "Mare e Terra" is more than one step further, with contribution of South American prog stars like Carlos Plaza (leader of Kotobel), Pedro Castillo and Gerardo Ubieda (Tempano), among many others. Rodulfo uses here a chamber orchestra: violins, cello, flutes, sax, clarinet, trumpets, etc., added to usual the rock band, with male and female vocals. Two suites divided in two parts compose these 75 minutes of a fantastic symphonic and neo-classic rock, melodious and adventurous. Rodulfo's guitar playing is reminiscent of Steve Howe (Yes), and is combined with seventies orientated keyboards (including mini-moog), and groovy rhythms, revealing hints of Latin traditional music. This colourful and enthusiast music, constantly inspired and lively, is at the top of the today's symphonic production.
Yochk'o Seffer/My Old Roots ....import CD $18.99
This legendary musician has achieved a sucessful musical career since the Magma days, with ZAO, NEFFESH MUSIC, etc. His unique musical style is a sort of ethnic jazz, influenced by Hungarian music and American music (Coltrane), among others. "My old roots" is a collection of pieces from 1976 and 1980, created with Neffesh Music and for "Chromophonie." Some pieces were never released on CD, and one is an unreleased track, recorded in 2005 with violin player Lajos Horvath. It's an excellent introduction to Seffer's lively, inventive and colourful music. Just brilliant!
Shades of Dawn/From Dusk Till Dawn ....import CD $18.99
This German band from Dusseldorf released an album in 1998, "The Dawn Of Time," and "From Dusk Till Dawn" is made of unreleased 1994 demo tapes, carefully reworked and restored in 2003 with some overdubs and bonus tracks. The result is an excellent album of symphonic/neo progressive. SHADES OF DAWN was then influenced by ELOY, PINK FLOYD, CAMEL, GENESIS (among others), and also MARILLION for some keyboard solis. It's very melodious, nice lyrical guitar solis, well played, with a lot of dynamic and lively instrumental sequences and "airy atmospheres." Waiting for the next album, "Graffity's Rainbow," you’ll certainly enjoy this nice piece of symphonic prog!

SOMA PLANET is a Progressive rock band born in the mid-Nineties, in Barcelona, Catalunya. At first very influenced by bands such as KING CRIMSON (Seventies and Eighties), GONG, CAN or EMBRYO, the musicians quickly achieved a personal style. All their efforts and time were dedicated in finding formulas to play music that permitted at the same time breaking with traditional harmonies and structures, following improvisational patterns built slowly in time, starting in understanding music as a game. The first eponymous album has been recorded during summer 2003. "Bholenath" is the second opus of the band, released in 2008 by the Musea label. There's everything you can imagine in it, as far as Seventies are concerned (Except for keyboards): versatile drumming, roaming bass, a mix of acoustic and electric sequences, vocal (A little) and instrumental (A lot) tracks, one minute interludes and 9-10 minutes complex pieces, nice melodies, frantic rhythms and peaceful moods, electronics, a pandemonium of heavy saxophones and whispering flutes. Their musical style, still influenced by GONG, is a complex mix of Progressive rock, experimental music, jazz and ethnic influences (Indian among others) and percussions.

It's the fourth album by this dutch band, and "Time re-arranged" and "Time to End" had received critical acclaim. S.O.T.E. goes one step further with "Reasons," a concept album that deals with a lifetime Time seems to be the main theme for S.O.T.E.! Connected with mind's existential and philosophical preoccupations in each age of life. S.O.T.E. is basically a power trio (guitars/basses/drums), with some additional keyboards in the background. But the band's music has become fully personal and hard to categorise. The main initial influence for S.O.T.E. was RUSH, and their music was also compared to QUEENSRYCHE, DREAM THEATER's "Scenes from a Memory," or HOLDSWORTH. It gives a good idea of "Reasons'" atmospheres, still dark and tortured, but the music has become really personal, powerful, diverse and constantly inspired, creating an innovative blend of metal and progressive/symphonic genre.

This brazilian band was created in 2000, and this first album was recorded in 2002. "Tarkus" name may sound like a reference to E.L.P., but these six pieces reveal a personal music, although certainly keeping the seventies flame alive. The flute player offers us sequences near CAMEL or JETHRO TULL, and other influences are to be found in GENESIS (especially the guitar parts) or P.F.M and BANCO. But TARKUS musical compositions also offer heavy moments, together with a general symphonic inspiration. "A gaze between the past and the future" is made of six pieces, two of them including covers (of NEXUS and DEVIL DOLL). It's a brilliant symphonic rock, with strong melodies and enthusiasm!

Due to the great demand, Colossus (The Finnish Progressive Music Association) and Musea proudly present their new progressive rock epic, succeeding to Kalevala, The Spaghetti Epic, the Colossus Of Rhodes...: THE SEVEN SAMURAI! The intention is to publish a progressive rock concept album inspired by the famous film by Akira Kurosawa called "The 7 Samurais" (1954). The story has been divided in 3 chapters same as the number of bands participating, each band has chosen one chapter and has made a suite inspired by it. TEMPANO (Venezuela), CAP and TAPROBAN (Italy). The total length of each suite is around 25 minutes. The sound remains faithful to 70's progressive music: original 70's keyboards (Hammond, Moog, Mellotron, Fender Rhodes, Grand Piano etc.) are preferred, and the bands avoid loops, drum machines or other 80's - 90's digital sounds. Tempano, CAP and TAPROBAN have composed three magnificent progressive suites, reminding all the seventies masters, like Genesis and Jethro Tull for Tempano, Banco or King Crimson for CAP, ELP for Taproban, among many other influences. But each piece is also faithful to each band’s style and personality.

During the "1001 Degrés Centigrades" period, MAGMA was stuggling to find a wider audience. This was mainly due to the fact that the French band played such an innovative music and used its own language known under the name Kobaian. So, drummer extraordinaire Christian VANDER and his teammates decided to hide behind a different name and write texts in English. Not too long in fact, as the second side of the only opus recorded have been designed to lead the listener to discover musical landscapes not so far away from Zeuhl. "Undia" even sees the comeback of Kobaian. Unfortunately, the UNIVERIA ZEKT exeperience didn't last long, and MAGMA went back to its own concept shortly after with much success. That's why "The Unnamables" (1971) is often regarded as a mythical album! As every Musea reissue, the CD version includes biography, rare photographs, etc.

In the late Sixties, EKSEPTION and Rick Van Der LINDEN were among the first musicians to create a blend of musical styles that went from classical music to pop and jazz. Extremely popular thanks to its instrumental covers of Ludwig Van BEETHOVEN ("The Fifth") and Aram KHATSATURJAN ("Sabre Dance"), the Dutch line-up was replaced by TRACE in the year 1974. This new band followed in the path taken by EKSEPTION, becoming thus a Progressive rock power-trio led by the keyboards of its virtuoso leader. A serious counterpart to EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER! The Musea label and the Finnish magazine Colossus endlessly continue their quest for the greatest universal themes, in order to complete their collection of concept -albums dedicated to Progressive rock. The hero of the day is Dante Alighieri, the famous medieval author from Firenze who wrote "The Divine Comedy." That's precisely this epic piece of work, without a doubt one of the greatest books of all times, that serves as the basis for this new project. And of course, it has been divided in three parts: Inferno, Purgatorio and Paradiso. The Finnish magazine Colossus asked thirty (yes, thirty) progressive bands, from all over the world, to illustrate moments of "Kalevala." Kalevala is the Finnish national epic, made of old Finnish ballads and lyrical songs, a complex and diverse cycle of legends which inspired Tolkien as well as the composer Sibelius, among many others. The idea of the project was to use original, "vintage" instruments of the seventies, to get the "old" feeling needed by the story. And, by the way, no programmed drums. This triple concept album produced by Musea is composed of nine symphonic suites, each one around 25 minutes, by the most innovative and talented international bunch of musicians that you can imagine: NATHAN MAHL, NEXUS, GLASS HAMMER, XII ALFONSO, SIMON SAYS, C.A.P., TEMPANO, MINIMUM VITAL, and AETHER. They composed their piece, instrumental or sung, inspired by a part of the odyssey, and by the masters of progressive music. The ghosts of YES, KING CRIMSON, PINK FLOYD and GENESIS, among others, were invited to the feast, to offer a fantastic album, in which each band offered the best: nearly four hours of wonderful symphonic music!

VERSUS X could become one of the greatest modern Progressive rock bands and the one with the most personality. Those four German musicians (Guitar-vocals, keyboards, bass & drums) perform an elaborate and suggestive music that goes through a lot of effort to create different ambiences. The lyrics (Sung in perfect English by a top vocalist) show an ambition that is only matched by the complex and hyper-refined instrumentation. If it is always possible to relate this band to some Seventies references (Some atmosphere and the singers' voice could evoke ELOY), this mainly translates in their feelings, not so much of the formal aspect of their work. So, the result is some decisively original tracks with a quite unique sound. "Primordial Ocean" showcases four tracks in the 15-20 minutes area, plus one elegant piano interlude. ARNE SCHAEFER's lyrics still combine Science, Philosophy and metaphysical questions. The music stills reveals complex, intricated piano or (Often vintage) keyboards, as well as fine guitar interplays.

Young French keyboard player and great lover of '70s sounding electronic music Vincent Coudert can be found behind the name Vinc2. Some probably remember him for being featured on Antiklimax's second album "Aurora Polaris." Now, it's his turn to be under the limelight! Here is then his first album issued in 2008 on the Dreaming label: "Exoplanete." His works are inspired by the German school in general and Tangerine Dream in particular, with a special liking of the experiments carried out in "Phaedra." Completely instrumental except two tracks sung by Christine Clement, this majestic work reveals an almost cinema-like style.

XII Alfonso got to be one of the "greatest" bands of international Progressive rock, thanks to their first album issued in 1996 and called "The Lost Frontier." Once more, the band creates a very original instrumental piece of work, seventeen musical fragments mixing symphonic, neo-classic, experimental and French popular music. XII Alfonso can't be linked with anything else, even if its musical approach has some common points with Isildurs Bane for instance. In order to fill the gap between the second and the last volume of the trilogy, XII Alfonso offers today a brand new album, named "Under," trying to illustrate the reality under the events. Fully instrumental, this opus includes many sounds, noises and voices. One may regognize the famous speech by reverend Martin Luther KING, whom the band pays tribute. Musically speaking, the Camel influences from the beginning are now far away, in favour of a more personal approach. And that's with great pleasure that one welcomes the return of the lyrical guitar parts courtesy of Philippe Claerhout, both electric and acoustic.

Xystus is a Dutch Progressive heavy-metal band formed in 1999 by drummer Ivo Van Dijk and guitarist-vocalist Bas Dolmans. They enlisted bassist Mark Brekelmans and second guitarist Bob Witsma. Through the course of releasing two albums, 2004's "Receiving Tomorrow" and 2006's "Surreal," the band built up a buzz and fanbase in The Netherlands. The musicians even contacted the Utrechtsch Studenten Concert (The country's oldest symphony orchestra), in order to record the rock opera "Equilibrio." Conceived as both an actual stage production and studio recording, is was performed to four sold out audiences in July 2008. Over four thousand people witnessed the opera. Sensory is proud to release the studio recording of "Equilibrio," which features key scenes from the opera. The story revolves around a wanderer named Diegu (Bas Dolmans) who finds himself caught between the forces of Good and Evil, the power mad ruler Primos (John Vooijs) and the altruistic rebel Avelin (Michelle Splietelhof). Primos makes a pact with Death (George Osthoek) to take over the world. After unsuccessful efforts by Diegu to mediate between Avelin and Primos, the latter ends up with complete power and the world is thrown out of balance. Diegu is summoned by the goddess Lady Sophia (Simone Simons). She watches over Earth and entrusts Diegu with the job of reuniting Primos and Avelin in order to restore the balance between Good and Evil again.

One of the most legendary bands of the Magma family is back with a live album. Yoch'ko Seffer (sax, flute, tarogato), Faton Cahen (piano, synth, bass synth) and François Causse (drums and percussion), recorded these nine pieces live and added some programming. They play an ethnic free jazz, based on afro-american percussion, piano (or synth) and Seffer's instruments which he plays with an incredible energy, including the forgotten "tarogato," a wood instrument used in Hungary in the sixteenth century. With these three virtuosos we live an incredible musical trip, constantly innovative and diverse, keeping well the balance between musical structures and improvisations. One more musical adventure by an essential band in the French rock history.
