First and foremost, Inside Out Music was born out of a genuine passion for progressive rock and metal. From the very beginning our goal has been to use all of our resources and experience to find and acquire the very finest new progressive music in the world - and - in turn - to present it back to the world in a meaningful way. Quite simply, we are dedicated to developing progressive music as a genre by developing the best acts that the genre has to offer.
We'll spare you the whole story which is painfully long but, the essential facts are these: Inside Out Music America is the product of a partnership between Jim Pitulski of Roundtable Entertainment in the U.S. and Thomas Waber/Michael Schmitz of InsideOut Music in Germany. Inside Out Music is currently one of Europe's top independent labels and are certainly the territory's number one imprint for progressive music. Roundtable are best known for their management of bands such as Dream Theater, Spock’s Beard and Fish. Although a separate and independent entity, the "partnership" decided to carry over the Inside Out name to the resulting new company as a homage to the credibilty that Inside Out Music (Germany) had achieved with the bands and fans of progressive music in Europe. We now intend to establish our own identity as a company that truly understands the bands that they work with and the audience that they hope to reach.
The titles below also include the Essential Buy Series which are recordings that IOMA has acquired because we feel that they are "must haves" for us - and "must haves" for anyone who truly appreciates quality music. His album Shackleton's Voyage is spectacular in every respect and sees Hamburg's multi-instrumentalist Frank Bossert return to his musical roots. The music remains very psychedelic in nature, more early Can than Faust. The presence of acoustic guitars and bouzouki emphasizes the easygoing nature of the music, along with Stefan Diez's elegant guitar soloing, while occasional free-form passages keep things on the edge. They run the gamut from pure Krautrock to prog rock and fusion jazz sections with beautiful audacity. Filled with Mellotron and guitar jamming, it has often been hailed as a highlight by prog rock fans who had a hard time digesting the less immediate material, but it's actually weaker than what came before it -- without lessening the appeal of this album.

The debut album by Agitation Free followed a somewhat different path than your average Krautrock band, veering unexpectedly toward the Middle East, specifically Egypt, in search of atmosphere and material. Underneath the dueling guitars and spacy synth work, desert rhythms and taped sounds of dusky cities percolate, adding depth and spice to the otherwise smooth, Teutonic grooves. It's a tribute to the apparent sincerity of the band that the use of these motifs does not sound at all contrived, instead integrating quite well. Malesch is a solid, even inspired recording that stands somewhat apart from the usual cliches of the genre. Fans of German progressive rock from this period will certainly want to hear and enjoy it.

Amon Duul II recorded Carnival In Babylon in autumn 1971. Their penchant for experimentation, which had marked their predecessor albums, mixing numerous European and Far-Eastern influences, made way on Carnival In Babylon for a tighter, more contemporary approach. Vocalist Renate Knaup benefited most from this change of direction and proved on Carnival in Babylon to be more of a presence than ever before. While tracks such as 'Shimmering Sand' or 'Hawknose Harlequin' still allowed the group's earlier love of experimentation to shine through, Amon Duul II relied on shorter and clearly tighter arrangements on the tracks, 'C.I.D. In Uruk,' 'Kronwinkl 12' and 'Tables Are Turned.'

Following a year long 'break' from music and with a newfound spontaneous creative surge, Amon Duul II awoke from the shadows of Herrsching's Lake Ammersee in October 1974 to record "Hijack" in just two days of sessions. "Hijack" is simply good from back to front. It may not be as psychedelic as their early recordings, in fact it is more rock-orientated, but this does not knock its quality. In 1972 Amon Duul II embarked on their first tour of Britain, recording a show at the Greyhound club in Croydon on December 16, 1972, which was released in Britain in 1973 and in Germany one year later. Lead by the warped and psychy vocals of Renate Knaup and double guitar interplay of Chris Karrer and John Weinzierl, "Live in London" will certainly change the listener's current disposition. Highly experimental music with a certain flare and charm that could only be pulled off by Amon Duul II. "Live in London" explores some pretty dark corners of your mind with sound effects, loads of warbled and distorted guitars, keyboards and bass and drum interplay. Chris Karrer also lends some sax and violin to help aid the highly psychedelic live infestations. A great live album with some lovely improvisation and a definite trip into the depths of your mind. Sounds magazine wrote "Although it does seem a shame that Live In London is a relatively old recording, which doesn't take into account the development that the band has undergone since, the album still gives a very good impression of one of the more successful Amon Duul concerts." British journalists even attested Amon Duul II to be one of the most important German acts.

Amon Duul II/Vive La Trance ....CD $15.99
Amon Duul II's 6th album "Vive La Trance" was originally released in 1973. The group experimented with world music rhythms on compositions such as 'Mozambique,' and risked unusual piano dissonances on 'Jalousie,' proving on tracks such as 'Trap,' 'Dr. Jeckyll' and 'Pig Man' their distinct feel for haunting rock songs, and allowing tracks such as 'Fly United' to gleam with thoroughly strange organ sounds. The result even pleased German press, who otherwise tended to treat comparable acts from other parts of Germany with a certain skepticism and arrogance. Germany's most critical music publication, Sounds, mused on the release of Vive La Trance: "The grating, grasping electronics have become even denser, more variable and dominant since Wolf City, lending Duul's sound a somewhat lighter, hovering element as an antithesis to the complicated, drum-driven rhythms." Beyond that, the musicians experimented - in the journalists opinion - with 'bubbling, airy-spooky sounds that I'd love to fill my bathtub with.' The songs on this recording tend to be shorter (averaging around 3 1/2 minutes), and more conventional in structure and subject matter, but there is an overlay of electronics and psychedelic effects that definitely keeps the music within the progressive realm.

The fifth Amon Duul studio album, Wolf City, saw the light of day in September 1972. While its predecessor, Carnival In Babylon, had, according to Karrer, still been produced "with revolvers drawn," the recordings of Wolf City went off comparably peacefully. The same applied to the musical direction of the album, which sounded more song-oriented, not as multi-layered and more geared to Renate Knaup's unusual vocal style. Even the sweeping improvisations of earlier days were a thing of the past, only the seven-minute opener 'Surrounded By The Stars' coming close to the playing time of their previous cuts. Atmospheric numbers such as 'Wie der Wind am Ende einer Strasse' or the brief, avant-garde 'Deutsch Nepal' were definite highlights of Amon Duul's creative oeuvre.

First released in 1970, Yeti was the second album by Amon Duul II and is quite a musical achievement. Originally released as a double vinyl album set and now re-mastered onto a single CD, Yeti contains some of Amon Duul's most impressive work, delivering their thick, full-fledged, multi-layered sound with dense instrumentation and a certain epic vastness... in many ways not unlike the craftmanship of early Can. This is Krautrock in the full mass of its power: huge, towering, dark and completely devoid of any happy optimism but still bound full of energy. Instrumentally, Yeti is an album of pure magic with some great psychy, sitarish, acoustic guitar plucking and hand percussion interplay. The most important and consistently underrated space-rock unit of the '70s, Cluster (originally Kluster) was formed by Dieter Moebius, Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Conrad Schnitzler as an improv group that used everything from synthesizers to alarm clocks and kitchen utensils in their performances. Continuing on as a duo, Moebius and Roedelius eventually recorded many landmark LPs -- separately, as a duo, and with all manner of guest artists from Brian Eno to Conny Plank to Neu!'s Michael Rother -- in the field of German space music often termed kosmische. Cluster also continued to explore ambient music into the '90s, long after their contemporaries had drifted into tamer new age music or ceased recording altogether. Cluster's second album as a duo is a January, 1972 recording that is similar in style to the other albums released by the band to this point. Like Moebius and Rodelius' previous work, 'Cluster II' is mostly an album of drones and industrial atmospheres, an ambient album before the label began to be applied to music. For the first time, Cluster broke down their sound experiments into some bite-sized pieces. Legendary producer Conny Plank even got credits as composer of music that became more quiet and joyful. Here Cluster's tracks became titles for the first time which reflected their strange kind of humour.

Zuckerzeit ('Sugar Time') is well named, because after the stark and (at times) testing Cluster II, this is an altogether sweeter affair. The music here seems much denser, there's more colour and a much greater degree of poppiness, all lending the album a pleasingly light and upbeat feel. One very obvious difference to Cluster II is the extensive use of drum machines, meaning that where tracks had previously consisted of layers of synthesizer noise, they now have a definite rhythm, seeming to free the melodic side of the band. Actually it's an album put together by two separate artists operating under a collective title, with Moebius and Roedelius each contributing five tracks. Although this kind of behaviour rarely produces a unified outcome, here the album holds together nicely. Although Cluster are less well known than the likes of Kraftwerk, this material deserves to be considered as being as influential and important in the development of electronic music. This is powerful and creative music making, and for anyone looking to venture into the less Rock side of Krautrock, or into groundbreaking electronic music, it's a very fine place to start.

Assembled from a thousand snippets of short-wave radio, Czukay was able to combine the challenging, daring sounds of radio into a new form of rock music never before heard. Released in 1973, "Rocksession" was the second of two Embryo releases on the Brain label, again combining their strange crossover of Space Rock and ethnic sounds. Compared to Embryo's later recordings, "Rocksession" still betrayed European influences, while already revealing obvious hints of the ethno style that was to make Embryo internationally renowned following their first African tour. This journey, which took the group on a four week tour of Northern Africa and Portugal in May 1972, came close to a culture shock for (Embryo frontman) Christian Burchard: "It was like being on another planet. We didn't understand anything and discovered only later that they have a different tonal system and sense of rhythm." The four expansive, sweeping numbers on "Rocksession" went down well with the German press, Wilfried Trenkler commenting in Sounds magazine in 1972: "It's seething and throbbing under a hot sun in a wide, peaceful landscape." Faust from Hamburg can be considered as the most notorious representative of early 'krautrock' bands. What made them notorious was their artistic and experimental approach of dealing with rock music. Radically breaking with old conventions in music, they were way ahead of their time. And so it was quite a frequent occurrence that their gloomy sound collages met with point-black rejection. Nowadays, music experts almost unanimously agree that Faust must be counted among the most important and most influential German bands on an international scale. 'So Far' – their second album – was originally released in 1972. The album arrived in a black sleeve with paintings inside which apparently corresponded to each of the tracks. The album opens with the stomping, primal beat of 'It's A Rainy Day Sunshine Girl' - Roxy Music used a similar pattern on 'Bogus Man', and Brian Eno identified as one of the essential beats in 70s music. Following this outbreak of near-normality, the dream logic of the first album reasserts itself with abrupt shifts in sound and style. Acoustic interludes of almost classical formality are contrasted with electronic freak-outs, and there are passages on this album which sound almost conventional. Having mastered their studio technique, Faust created a seamless, otherworldly sequence of musical events that owes little to anything that had been done before. Faust are one of the legends of underground music, and these are the albums that the legend is based on. Essential listening.

Frost first came to see the light of day when Jem Godfrey – musician, songwriter and producer – founded the band in September 2004. The Brit already made a name for himself in the world of pop music on his collaboration with Ronan Keating and Atomic Kitten as songwriter and producer. That is what Jem Godfrey says about Frost and their debut album Milliontown: “I’ve always been into progressive rock music and so I decided to do exactly that, writing an album to my kind of taste”. When you think of Grobschnitt, you think of stage shows lasting up to four hours and of Solar Music, a happening that went on for sometimes upwards of 60 minutes. Grobschnitt was founded in 1970 and was one of the first acts on the legendary German 'Brain' label. They existed for 19 years, played 1,356 shows and released 14 albums. From records like Rockpommels Land ('77), Solar Music ('78) and Illegal ('81), they sold more than 100,000 units each – a figure that was very impressive for a German band of that time. All of these records are considered Krautrock classics today. The double, remastered CD, The International Story, gives an overview from 1971 to 1981, including a complete live recording of Solar Music and other tracks from the previously mentioned releases, as well as other Grobschnitt classics, most of which are rare live recordings.

Grobschnitt from Hagen are one of the most successful and wildest acts in the history of German rock music. Their trademark was their lavish stage show and a good helping of high spirits. 1975 saw the band release their third LP, "Jumbo," recorded at Krautrock mastermind Conny Plank's newly-built studio. As usual, vocalist Willi Wildschwein sang all the lyrics in English. The band later tentatively translated them into German, and one year later the album was re-released, this time featuring German lyrics – an absolute novelty on the German music scene. (Eroc claimed in the liner notes that Willi Wildschwein was glad to be able to understand at long last what he was actually singing about.) This CD reissue features both versions, as well as two bonus tracks.
Grobschnitt/Rockpommel's Land ....CD $16.99
"Rockpommel's Land" is Grobschnitt's rock opera, based on a concept developed by their keyboardist, Mist. The album tells the story of a little boy who is taken away to a dream world by a fairytale bird, where he brings back to life a dead, cold city and its inhabitants. The album consists of four tracks which were up to 20 minutes long, true to the style of Mist's idols, Yes and Genesis. The band spent 15 months working on the fairytale-like music before recording it at Conny Plank's studio in four weeks. In the liner notes, Eroc mentioned a number of occasionally serious disagreements in the rehearsal room, which had some band members repeatedly leave the building in exasperation during rehearsals, although this doesn't seem to have had a negative effect on their recording: "Rockpommel's Land" is considered one of the band's greatest success stories.

Guru Guru were one of the wildest and most imaginative bands to emerge from the 1970's Krautrock scene and gave definition to the term. This album, originally released in 1974, marked the end of an era for Guru Guru, effected most profoundly by the departure of their highly experimental guitarist, Ax Genrich. Ax was replaced by ex-Eiliff guitarist, Persian born Houshang Nejadpour. "The Day of Timestop," for example, is an eye watering demonstration of Nejadpour's light speed electric guitar riffing which is nothing short of dazzling. As a result, Dance of the Flames sounded more fluid and expressive than the previous drugged out musical concoctions by this now infamous band.

A touch more immediate and song-oriented than its predecessor, but no less enchanting and lovely to hear, De Luxe – originally released in 1975 - again features the trio experimenting with a variety of approaches, most particularly including vocals here and there for the first time. There's also a guest musician helping out, namely Mani Neumeier from Guru Guru, and while he's not playing all the time, where he does appear, as on the wonderful lengthy jam "Walky-Talky," a blend of his percussion and swooping guitar filigrees and keyboards, it's a fine choice. His slow, subtle build throughout the song helps send it higher and higher without seeming to. The various vocals really do fit the music in a lovely way, and it's little surprise that Brian Eno might have felt even more of an affinity with the group than before, being non-musical but still affecting, like mysterious chants or barks. The motorik pulses and rhythms, however soft and subtle, still dominate the proceedings, while the glazed, warm feeling of the whole album is astounding.

Though Harmonia began as a sideline excursion for Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Moebius of Cluster and Michael Rother of Neu!, the group became one of the most legendary in the entire Krautrock/kosmische scene with the release of several mid-'70s LPs. After two studio albums recorded as Cluster, Roedelius and Moebius moved out to the German countryside to build their own studio in the village of Forst. After several disappointments in his attempt to expand Neu! into a live unit, Rother retreated to Cluster's studio for a series of relaxed, improvisational jam sessions that wedded Cluster's exploratory space music with the chugging rhythms and guitar sense of Rother. Brian Eno had proclaimed Harmonia "the world's most important rock group." The debut Harmonia LP, Musik Von Harmonia, appeared in 1974 (with an accomplished live track, recorded in Amsterdam) and marks the first collaborative effort between Cluster's Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Moebius and Neu!'s Michael Rother: a German supergroup, and genuine rarity, a colossal artistic success. The three members were skilled keyboard players, guitarists, electronic percussionists and composers. This was a group musically and conceptually miles ahead of its time. This debut Harmonia album is at once a product of their source bands and a fine new twist on them, resulting in music that captures what for many is the Krautrock ideal, or more accurately, the motorik ideal. It's not Kraftwerk's all-synth, clean, clinical pulse, nor Neu!'s seemingly effortless glide, nor Can's stomping art world funk. Instead it's at once playful and murky, steady and mechanical, a supergroup of sorts who easily achieves and maintains such a seemingly overstated status by embracing a variety of approaches that work wonders.

Their second album, released in 1973, saw the melodic rockers Jane, from Hanover, continue what they had started on their debut recording: spherical keyboard soundscapes, accompanied by tough guitars and heavy drums. Their irresistible anthems were up to nine minutes long, allowing guitarists Wolfgang Kranz and Klaus Hess to really let off steam. "Here We Are" almost didn't happen – the band's vocalist had died and the bassist had fallen seriously ill. Luckily both had already been replaced when the Brain label asked the band to record their second album. The re-release of "Here We Are" is overshadowed by the death of Peter Panka in June 2007. The band's founder member was an institution on the German rock scene. The latest release by Peter Panka's Jane saw the light of day only a few days before his death, Panka having continued to man the drum kit during the group's recent tour.

This excellent Band from Hannover made quite a splash on the international scene and was discovered by BRAIN founder Gunter Korber. On this, their third outing originally released in 1974, the band delivers unusually "raw" songs. Hanover melodic rockers, Jane were discovered by Gunther Korber, the founding father of Brain. At times they were almost as successful as the Scorpions, their Hanover colleagues. On their fourth LP, "Lady" – originally released in 1975 - the musicians who had joined up around Klaus Hess and Peter Panka brought their mystical and melodious heavy rock to perfection. It is considered to be the best and most characteristic album recorded by Jane. The band has been out and about ever since, though in a slightly different line-up. Electronic music pioneer Dieter Moebius (Cluster, Harmonia) wanted to record an album together with his musical soul-mates, Okko Bekker and Asmus Tietchens, at Conny Plank's studio in 1976. In the event, Plank himself even participated in the recordings as a musician. Two other musicians also joined the fold: bassist Helmut Hattler and saxophonist Johannes Pappert (both from Kraan) had just finished working on an album and were happy to stay on at the studio. Suddenly, there were six musicians with six different personalities who had never worked together before. But what could easily have gone wrong turned into a great document of electronic music, which was rather atypical for its time and conveyed a certain lightness, revealing complex structures on closer inspection. This is the first official "Liliental" release on CD.

Six Magellan albums in almost 15 years – that doesn't seem like a lot of output. However, Magellan mastermind Trent Gardner always works with other well-known musicians from the prog rock camp. For example: James LaBrie of Dream Theater, Steve Walsh of Kansas, and Tony Levin of King Crimson, as well as his other band, Explorer's Club. Magellan albums always offer up a plethora of surprises. This is also true with Magellan's new opus, Symphony For A Misanthrope. The instrumental opener, 'Symphonette' (featuring Steve Walsh and David Manion) and 'Pianissimo Intermission' are filled with lush, classical moments. The surprise is the dark prevailing mood, one that could be found on 'Hundred Year Flood.' 'Why Water Weeds' is a dramatical piece in which epic moments, heavy rock parts and syncopated motifs are changing. Symphony For A Misanthrope also features coarse, complex rhythms and changes of themes, a trademark of the Gardner brothers, finding their climax in the 18-minute long 'Cranium Reef Suite.' Once again, handy melodies have sneaked into those compositions, giving the Magellanian cosmos of sound a completely new impetus.

The real big "breakthrough" for these "Romantic-Rockers" from Hamburg came actually with their third album, but this, their second effort originally released in 1975, already shows the direction: poetic German text, surrounded by ever changing progrock with classic influences, which in this case is still "rough" enough not to descend in to insipid drivel. Their fondness for German Poet Friedrich Hoelderlin shines through and their music has also been "borrowed" in sound and style by French duo Air, for their soundtrack to the "Virgin Suicides." Guest guitarist Carlo Karges is present here (later became the guitarist for famous Nena) and his track "Wer Schmetterlinge lachen hort" became the secret hymn of the band. One of the best in the genre.

At the zenith of their career, Hamburg's "romantic rockers" Novalis released this thoroughly successful album in 1978, considered their best recording by many. Certainly it was their most commercially successful offering. The tracks are diverse and polished and, unlike on previous releases, occasionally even radio-compatible with a playing time in the four minute range. Vocalist Fred Muhlbock, who had joined the band for the recordings of the previous album, "Brandung," marked the tracks with his dynamic voice, while sophisticated instrumentals by keyboarder Lutz Rahn liven up the track listing.

If there's a sling or an arrow that could be directed against progressive metal or worse, a prog metal super group - it's that the work often turns out to sound like a loose-bolted, duct-taped monster resembling the sum of disparate parts. This is not the case with O.S.I. O.S.I. or Office of Strategic Influence released their first, self-titled CD in February of 2003 and to this day it remains one of Inside Out Music's best selling titles. As with the first release, Free features the incredible musical talents of Jim Matheos (Fates Warning) on guitar, Kevin Moore (ex-Dream Theater, Chroma Key) on vocals and keyboards, and Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater) on drums. Present once again is the now patented O.S.I. sound. However, Free takes on a slightly more mature and evolved style. You'll still hear plenty of crunch and drive from Matheos and Portnoy, but Moore's often melancholy vocal styling is somehow a bit more hardened and world-weary. The recording also experiments with new sounds and an even more unique use of the sonic space. Their complex blend of comfort riffs, complex arrangements and experimentation will be ambrosia to the Dream Theater / Fates Warning fan base and will also appeal to fans of bands from Porcupine Tree and Pink Floyd to Radiohead and Wire.

Proto-Kaw is the second version of the band that, in its third incarnation, evolved and became what the world knows as Kansas. "Kansas II" formed in 1971 and dissolved in 1973. Livgren went on to become an integral member of the famous version of Kansas for more than a decade, writing songs such as "Dust in the Wind" and "Carry On Wayward Son" that became true classics. "Kansas II" never got a record deal back then. The band's music was simply too far ahead of its time, even for the open-minded music scene then. Fortunately, early studio demo recordings and two live recordings were ultimately remastered by Livgren and released in 2002 with the full consent of the members on the critically acclaimed CD 'Proto-Kaw: Early Recordings from Kansas 1971-73.' Michael Harris and manager John Purdom had the collective vision of a progressive rock band some years ago. Through an ad on the internet, Michael teamed up with Ted Leonard, the great vocalist of the US band Enchant. After Michael and Ted spent quite some time crafting and demoing the material, they then united with the rhythm section of Haji's Kitchen and Outworld keyboardist Bobby Williamson to form Thought Chamber and record their debut album Angular Perceptions, an album full of catchy melodies and outstanding musicianship.
