Talking Elephant - At one point in the mid 1970s, Horslips bidded to be Ireland's answer to Steeleye Span. They also had crossover fans with Jethro Tull, Genesis, and even Yes in their folkier moments. Horslips released many superb albums along the way, becoming Ireland's most acclaimed folk-rock and progressive band. Founded in Dublin during 1970 as a quintet playing a brand of folk-based rock music whose only parallel could be found in the early work of Fairport Convention. Horslips drew on their distinctly Irish roots, and were capable of playing straight folk material when the moment called for it, but weren't afraid to turn up loud and hard, in the best art-rock style, on the right songs. Ork - Re-press of this CD originally released in 2007. Paul Kossoff has a deserved reputation for having been an outstanding guitarist, renowned for his fluid, slow, and melodic leads and bluesy riffs. His untimely death, and the manner of his demise sadly often overshadow his achievements. Kossoff's time with Free helped define blues rock in the late 1960's. Following their initial split in 1971 Kossoff kept the spirit flowing with this one off album, recorded with fellow Free founder Simon Kirke, plus bassist Tetsu Yamauchi, and legendary keyboardist John 'Rabbit' Bundrick. Bundrick supplied much of the composition on the album and we have a new interview with Bundrick included in the packaging. Talking Elephant - Amazing Blondel was formed by John Gladwin and Terry Wincott, after the break-up of too-loud rock band Methusala. They were joined by a talented guitarist Eddie Baird and Amazing Blondel were recommended by the members of the band Free to Island boss Chris Blackwell. After signing to Island Records and Artists, Amazing Blondel quickly produced three albums with the above line-up and undertook a series of intensive international and national tours to promote them. With the departure of John Gladwin the band continued as a duo and released 5 other albums before being reunited once again to record their comeback album 'Restoration' in the early nineties. With its release and a series of tours across the UK & Europe, John decided to call it a day once more and Blondel carried on as a duo. Talking Elephant - Folk Legends Dave Swarbrick & Simon Nicol, with a selection of their finest moments captured live and direct from the Swarbrick Archives. After Fairport Convention called it a day in 1979, Dave Swarbrick and Simon Nicol joined forces and spent the early eighties playing folk clubs throughout the country as an acoustic duo. Their repertoire was drawn from various sources - including Fairport's, Swarb's late seventies/early eighties solo albums and also several tracks that were individual to the duo. The acoustic duo proved popular and recorded three albums. Two of those, the 1981 live album 'Live at the White Bear,' and the 1984 studio effort 'Close to the Wind,' were re-issued a few years back on the Woodworm Records label. The third In The Club was released on Talking Elephant earlier this year. With such classic previously unheard versions of Sloth, Rosie & Close to the Wind this fantastic collection will be a treasure for all fans old and new. T-Bird - Formed 1967 and disbanded 1967 The Freak Scene didn't stay around very long. Never really a group in the sense of the Beatles, Stones or The Byrds – that is they didn't really function as a group, they had slightly more in common with the The Monkees, or more correctly, perhaps the original Grass Roots, in the sense that The Freak Scene was whatever its producer-songwriter had in mind. The Freak Scene was a studio created ensemble, the brain child of Rusty Evans, a one time Greenwich Village folkie turned producer. Evans had crossed paths with Bob Dylan and Felix Pappalardi early in his career, before they went their separate ways and he ultimately became a producer and dreamed up The Freak Scene project. David Bromberg was the first musician tapped for the "group," a sort of in-house psychedelic band created to record one album, Psychedelic Psoul. A rare piece of psychedelic memorabilia.

BGP - Brazilian-born Purim is one of the most influential jazz singers of the 1970s and beyond. She moved to the United States in the late '60s with her husband, master percussionist Airto Moreira and after working with Stan Getz and Duke Pearson joined Chick Corea in his fusion super-group Return To Forever where she was the voice on the seminal "Light As A Feather" LP. She then signed a solo deal with Mainstream Records, where she recorded a string of critically-acclaimed albums that cemented her reputation. She continues to work with her husband in a variety of projects. "Stories To Tell" was her second album for the Milestone label, made in 1974, which featured a heavyweight line-up from the fusion world that included Weather Report's Miroslav Vitous, George Duke, Earl Klugh and her husband. The song choice highlights her love for Brazilian music, with great renditions of 'Vera Cruz' and 'Casa Forte,' both became jazz-dance classics. The title track shows her pioneer jazz vocal style and McCoy Tyner's 'Search For Peace' is simply beautiful.

Fantastic Voyage - British indie label Ember released a number of rock albums and singles between 1969 and 1972, which today are much sought after by collectors of psychedelic, progressive and folk rock sounds. Many of the best of these recordings are gathered on 'Looking Towards The Sky.' Foremost among the artists compiled here is progressive rock band Blonde On Blonde, represented by tracks from both of their Ember albums. Tyrannosaurus Rex-style acoustic hippy duo Knocker Jungle and progressive folk group 9.30 Fly each managed one now highly collectable long player for the label. Fantastic Voyage has salvaged an exceptional track from Blue Beard's album, which never got beyond test pressings. The remainder of the material is taken from singles, ranging from the fuzzy psychedelic rock of Canadians The Dorians and the melodic folk rock of Paddy Maguire (backed by heavy friends Steve Winwood and Fotheringay), to the soul-rock fusion of Milt Matthews Inc, and from the psych-pop of our title track by Davey Payne & The Medium Wave and a collectable garage B-side by the otherwise pop-orientated Rusty Harness, to the rousing finale from Back Street Band.

Collector's Choice - How about an album featuring Ginger Baker, Jack Bruce, John McLaughlin, Dick Heckstall-Smith AND John Hiseman?! And, oh yeah, Graham Bond, too - much like John Mayall's various groups, Bond's bands, as proving grounds for soon-to-be superstars, often overshadowed the man at the center of them. For example, this record, though it came out in 1970, features Bruce, Baker and McLaughlin laying fairly straight-ahead jazz on three tracks recorded live at Klook's Kleek in 1963, a far cry from the heavy blues-rock and fusion that would later make them famous. The rest of the album is composed of 1966 tracks that mark the only recordings made by Bond with Heckstall-Smith and Hiseman before they left to form Colosseum (tellingly, the first track on their new band's debut album was a cover of Bond's 'Walkin' in the Park,' which appears here). These later tracks boast that uniquely Bond-ian mixture of R&B, jazz, blues and rock, and rank among his finest recordings. Talking Elephant - Treason is the last album by progressive folk band, Gryphon, originally released in 1977 by Harvest. English folk, renaissance chansons and rock all thrown into one. Gryphon were a British progressive rock band of the 1970s, notable for their unusual sound and instrumentation. Gryphon's music often sounded as much like rural English folk or renaissance chansons as it did rock, at least on their early recordings. After their third album (Red Queen to Gryphon Three) and the subsequent tour as a supporting act for Yes, their instrumentation became more conventional and the use of non-standard instruments was reduced. In June 2009 Gryphon performed a reunion concert at The Queen Elizabeth Hall, London. The four original members opened the evening with a selection of songs and instrumentals from the first album, Gryphon. They were then joined by Jon Davie (the final bass player who appeared on Treason) for the rest of the evening. Treason has not been available on CD for some 12 years and has been re-mastered fully with love, care and devotion for all serious listeners around the world.

Lemon - Considered to be one of England's best drummers, and very much in demand for rock and pop records, Cozy Powell was almost legendary for a heavy-hitting style that could be made to work with many kinds of rock music, whether for the thundering pop productions helmed by Mickie Most, Black Sabbath, Emerson, Lake & Powell, or even his own solo work (notably "Dance with the Devil," which was a major English hit in 1973.) Powell began his professional music career in 1965 with the Sorcerers, eventually winding up working with Jeff Beck after Beck left the Yardbirds. In 1971, Powell formed Bedlam, but eventually abandoned this project to produce singles such as "Dance with the Devil." He later formed Cozy Powell's Hammer, which broke up in 1975. After a brief sabbatical, he joined Rainbow, helping to give the band a thundering rhythm section before quitting after four years and four albums in 1980. Always in demand for the drum seat, he alternated between session work and working in a variety of bands, including the Michael Schenker Group, Whitesnake and Black Sabbath, never staying in any one band for very long. In 1996, he worked with former Fleetwood Mac guitarist Peter Green on his long-awaited comeback tour.

el - Across Post-War Europe composers like the young German, Karleheinz Stockhausen, the Romanian-born architect, Iannis Xenakis and the Frenchmen, Pierre Schaeffer and Pierre Henry began to seek out new ways of organising sound and looked to science for inspiration. Science and logic, after all, held out the promise of a new civilisation unsullied by irrational forces like nationalism; might it not do the same for the arts? These composers constructed their music according to widely differing philosophies, systems, formulae and beliefs. What drove them on was a hunger for new sounds and new soundscapes that pointed the way towards a world in which there was simply no place for the horrors of war. And there can be no doubt that their pioneering work proved an inspiration for future generations of musicians. They too were looking to free themselves from the dead weight of convention, and when in 1967 Paul McCartney discovered how much further Stockhausen had already gone with Gesang der Junglinge, he encouraged the Beatles to experiment with techniques ranging from the use of reversed tapes to the total abandonment of metre and melody - most notably on Revolution 9 and the (to date) unreleased 14-minute free-for-all Carnival of Light. All of the recordings in this set are beyond groundbreaking and historic. Everything is out of print or impossible to find and as an overview of the development of electronic and electro-acoustic music in the post-war years our edition is an invaluable document.

On a range of fresh, intriguing originals by the band's co-founders and principle composers, keyboardist Joe Zawinul and saxophonist Wayne Shorter, Zawinul's pioneering interest in what we now call world music is more in evidence, and his synthesizer sophistication is growing along with the available technology. Shorter's work on soprano sax is more animated than on Weather Report's previous two albums, and Alphonso Johnson brings his melodic bass to the fore. RPM - Retro - Singles, demos, acetates and unissued recordings from 'Just Four Men : 1964-1968.' Wimple Winch were four young musicians emerging from the Beat scene and searching for a new direction. They pushed the barriers of what was accepted as a normal pop 45, and 'Save My Soul' can now be seen as the first example of that UK musical hybrid: Freak Beat. Wimple Winch didn't stop there, they followed it up with the first mini Pop Opera in 'Rumble On Mersey Square South,' and dabbled in early psychedelia with 'Atmospheres.' Once ignited they flared with an incandescent glow, but faded all too fast and quickly fizzled out. Too much too soon...a great shame, as they were more than great - they were awesome!
