Now, the people who brought you Eclectic Discs bring you Esoteric Recordings, a new identity, but still a home for good music with the emphasis on quality packaged and remastered catalogue reissues and inspiring new works from artists with a history and heritage. Esoteric is an exciting part of a new chapter for label manager Mark Powell that began with Eclectic Discs, and continues as part of the Cherry Red group of labels. Mark said "Cherry Red Records is the oldest independent record label in Britain, born of the glory days of the UK indie music scene of the late 1970's. Whilst their compatriots have either gone by the wayside or have become part of multi-national corporations, Cherry Red have always stayed true to their ideals. It's an exciting prospect to establish Esoteric Recordings within the company and to be part of their continuing story. Banco del Mutuo Soccorso, better known in English speaking countries as Banco, were one of the finest Italian progressive rock bands of the 1970s and along with compatriots P.F.M. were one of the better known Italian groups.  A successful act in their home land, they came to international attention when they signed to Emerson Lake & Palmer's label Manticore in 1975. Their first album for the label, Banco was a fine work and featured reworked material with English vocals that had originally featured on their earlier Italian albums.  Their second and final album for the label, As in a Last Supper was the English language version of their classic Come in un Ultima Cena and featured the impressive track, Slogan.  Both are classic progressive albums and these new editions have been newly remastered and mark the albums' British debut on CD and continues the comprehensive series of releases of the classic Manticore catalogue.

Barclay James Harvest/A Concert For The People (Berlin) [30th Anniversary Edition] ....import CD $21.99

On August 30th 1980, Barclay James Harvest performed the most legendary concert of their career on the steps of the Reichtag in West Berlin. This free concert took place in front of an audience of 250,000 people next to the Berlin Wall which divided the city at that time. The event was filmed and recorded, spawning the band s most successful album in the UK and a film and video release which was also screened on television. In Germany, the album was released with two extra tracks in a limited edition package.  This 30th Anniversary edition of A Concert for the People (Berlin) features the two bonus tracks of the original German release.  The first 2000 copies will be released as a Limited Edition Digipack. This Esoteric Recordings reissue has been remastered from the original tapes and fully restores the original album artwork and coincides with the DVD release of the concert film.

Esoteric Recordings are pleased to release the 1977 album, Round the Back, and 1978 album, International, by Cafe Jacques.  Formed in 1973 by guitarist Chris Thomson and keyboard player Peter Veitch, they signed to CBS Records in 1976.  With drummer Mike Ogletree they recorded this debut album the following year with producer Rupert Hine. The sessions featured guest appearances by Phil Collins and Caravan alumni Geoffrey Richardson and John G. Perry.  Rupert Hine also produced their second album, International, which also featured guest appearances by Geoffrey Richardson and John G. Perry.   Fusing influences as diverse as Caravan, Steely Dan and Genesis, the band's debut album was an impressive work.  Never issued on CD in the UK before now, these releases coincide with the first Cafe Jacques concert in many years at the end of August.   These Esoteric Recordings reissues have been remastered from the original tapes and fully restores the original album artwork.

Esoteric Recordings is pleased to release this new remastered edition of the classic psych/progressive album, Contrasts, by Blonde on Blonde.  Formed in 1967, the group signed to Pye Records the following year, following a series of legendary appearances at the Middle Earth club and a support slot for Jefferson Airplane on their first UK tour.   The single All Day All Night released in November 1968 was to become a sought after classic of the genre.  The band's 1969 debut album was an equally fine work with many classic tracks such as Ride With Captain Max.  With original vinyl copies now reaching astronomical sums among collectors, this reissue is most welcome.  This edition fully restores the original album artwork and adds both sides of the bands first single, All Day All Night and Country Life, as bonus tracks.

When the first line-up of Rare Bird folded in early 1971, keyboard player Graham Field formed this outfit with bass player, vocalist and guitarist Alan Barry and King Crimson drummer Ancy McCulloch.  Although the band failed to emulate the commercial success of Field's previous group, the sole album they recorded was a magnificent example of British Progressive Rock. Esoteric Recordings announce the first ever official UK re-mastered CD release of First Meeting by Trifle.  Formed in late 1969 the band comprised George Bean (vocals, guitar), Patrick Speedy King (bass), Barry Martin (saxophones), John Pritchard (trumpet) and Rod Coombes (drums).  Trifle signed to Pye's Dawn imprint in 1970 and their only album was recorded later that year, by which time the band were joined by trumpet player Dick Cuthell for the recording sessions. In the vein of similar acts such as Manfred Mann Chapter Three and Colosseum, Trifle sought to fuse jazz and rock, also touching on folk styles (as evidenced by the fact that Trifle covered The Dubliners Dirty Old Town as the B-side to their Old fashioned Prayer Meeting single).

Esoteric Recordings continue their series of reissues by Flash with In the Can and Out of Our Hands. Upon his departure from Yes following the release of the album Time and a Word, guitarist Peter Banks formed this excellent progressive outfit featuring Ray Bennett (bass, guitar), Colin Carter (vocals) and Mike Hough (drums).  Signing to the Sovereign label in the UK, Flash recorded their eponymous debut album in 1972, enjoying much popularity in the USA. In the Can was the band's second album offering from the group and was released in 1973, featuring such excellent material as Lifetime, Black And White and Monday Morning Eyes.  This Esoteric Recordings re-mastered reissue also sees the debut CD release of the rare single Watch Your Step and a single edit of Lifetime.   Out of Our Hands was the final offering from the group and was released in 1973, featuring such excellent material as Dead Ahead, None the Wiser, Psychosync and Manhattan Morning. Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce the first ever UK CD release of the albums End of the World and It's Five O'Clock by Greek psych/prog legends Aphrodite's Child.   Formed in 1967 by keyboard player Vangelis, the band also featured Demis Roussos on bass and vocals and Lucas Sideras on drums. Their classic debut album, End of the World, was released in 1968 and featured the international hit Rain and Tears, partially inspired by Procol Harum's A Whiter Shade of Pale.  However, the album revealed a more experimental side to the band s nature with such psychedelic gems as The Grass Is Not Green, You Always Stand in My Way and Day of the Fool.  This Esoteric Recordings reissue has been re-mastered from the original tapes and includes both sides of Aphrodite s Child's first single as bonus tracks.  Their classic second album, It's Five O'Clock, was released in 1969 and featured the international hit from which the album took its name.  The LP revealed a more experimental side to the band's nature with such Psychedelic gems as Funky Mary and Let Me Love, Let Me Live.  This Esoteric Recordings reissue has been re-mastered from the original tapes and includes six bonus tracks which were released as three singles in 1969 and 1970, including a rare Italian only release.

Esoteric Recordings continue with releases on their new Reactive imprint, dedicated to reissues of classic German rock, with the first ever UK CD release of Psychonaut by Brainticket. Formed in 1968 by Belgian born keyboard player Joel Vandroogenbroeck, the band released their debut album, the extreme psychedelic Cottonwoodhill in Germany in 1971. Breaking apart soon after, Vandroogenbroeck formed a new incarnation of the group with drummer Barney Palm comprising Swiss and Italian musicians.  Psychonaut was recorded in Milan in 1972 and was less intense than Cottonwoodhill but was more cohesive and was an impressive psychedelic rock album, later much sampled by European trance DJs.   Psychonaut is one of THE essential albums associated with the German Psych & Prog scene of the early 1970's and is newly remastered for this release.

Atomhenge continues its series of definitive reissued editions of classic Hawkwind albums with the release of Church of Hawkwind.  The album, originally released in 1982 by RCA Active, began life during sessions for Sonic Attack in 1981 and continued into the first months of the following year. Having moved to London, Ardley studied arranging and composition from 1960 to 1961. He joined the JOHN WILLIAMS Big Band as pianist, writing both arrangements and new compositions, and from 1964 to 1970 was the director of the newly-formed New Jazz Orchestra. Neil Ardley developed dual careers in music and in writing and publishing, both of which he continued until his death on 23 February 2004. Ardley based this 1978 album on the ancient idea of the Harmony of the Spheres, the idea that each planet produces a musical note related to its orbit. The album notably features BARBARA THOMPSON and the skilled guitar playing of JOHN MARTYN over a rich orchestral sound mixing electronic keyboards with acoustic instruments and voices.

Armageddon was one of the great unsung bands of the mid-1970s. Formed in 1974 out of the ashes of the UK band Steamhammer, the group featured the vocal talents of former Yardbirds front man Keith Relf, alongside guitarist Martin Pugh, bassist Louis Cennamo and drummer Bobby Caldwell. Originally released by A&M Records in 1975, Armageddon's sole album featured some amazing music ranging from the Led Zeppelin-esque 'Paths and Planes and Future Gains' to the Progressive rock of 'Silver Tightrope' and 'Basking in the White of the Midnight Sun.' Recorded in Los Angeles in 1973, "Mirage" was one of the finest albums of the 1970's by Animals' front man Eric Burdon. The soundtrack for a proposed United Artists film with the Vietnam War as its subject matter, the music recorded by Burdon such as 'Dragon Lady,' 'River of Blood,' 'Mind Arc' and 'Driftin'/Geronimo's Last Stand' was some of the finest of his career. Exploring the genres of rock, psychedelia and African beats, the sessions also saw Burdon record the song 'Mirage,' written by Jimi Hendrix on the night he died. Released in March 1971, "Arena" was the second and final album by the group Marsupilami. Initially a folk-based group the band evolved into one of the most adventurous, if unsung, bands of the early 1970s, producing two stunningly original Mellotron soaked albums. The single 'Something in the Air,' released in 1969, was an international chart topping hit that seemed to sum up the mood of the times. Its inclusion in a poignant scene in the film "The Magic Christian" made the song even more legendary and heralded the arrival of Thunderclap Newman. The band was a trio fronted by John "Speedy" Keene, Jimmy McCulloch and Andy "Thunderclap" Newman , assembled by WHO guitarist PETE TOWNSHEND to serve as a vehicle for the songs of "Speedy" Keene. The band's sole album, produced by Townshend, was a wonderful slice of melodic whimsy, as English as anything by the Small Faces or The Kinks, but failed to the enjoy chart success of the band's debut single. Originally released in 1977 by Decca Records, "Faerie Symphony" was the third album by TOM NEWMAN, founder member of psychedelic group JULY and noted engineer and producer on many albums for MIKE OLDFIELD, including the multi-million selling "Tubular Bells." Newman's solo work began with two albums for Virgin Records before he signed to Decca Records for this third, classic album. Esoteric are pleased to continue their series of CD reissues of the catalogue of Finnish label Love Records with this classic album from 1975, released in Britain on Virgin. Pekka Pohjola was bass guitarist in the Finnish progressive outfit Wigwam, but departed the band in 1975 to embark on a solo career. In the album B the Magpie he produced a masterwork whose influence would spread globally thanks to a European release by Virgin Records. Among the album's fans was Mike Oldfield who would produce and perform on Pohjola's second album (The Mathematician's Air Display) and recruit him to perform on the Exposed tour.  A wonderful instrumental work, the album was also notably sampled in recent times by DJ Shadow. Classic progressive rock album - now 24-bit remastered from the original master tapes!   "Samurai" is truly a lost classic of the Progressive era. Darryl Way was founder member of the legendary CURVED AIR, a group that brought Way's strident electric violin playing to the fore on a string of hit albums. In 1973, Way formed WOLF, a progressive outfit featuring guitarist John Etheridge, bassist Dek Messecar (later in CARAVAN) and drummer Ian Mosley (now in MARILLION). The music was a heady mixture of styles and secured the band a contract with Decca's DERAM label. "Canis Lupus" was the group's debut, produced by KING CRIMSON member Ian McDonald (who also guested on the record).  The Esoteric edition of Canis Lupus features two bonus tracks.  "Saturation Point" was the group's second album and followed on from their innovative "Canis Lupus" LP and includes three bonus tracks. "Night Music" was the final album in the WOLF trilogy and perhaps the finest. With the band augmented by former "IF" vocalist John Hodgkinson, the album is a lost classic of 70's rock. Chris Wood/Vulcan ....CD $19.99

Esoteric Recordings are proud to announce the release of the album "Vulcan" by the late CHRIS WOOD, founder member of the legendary TRAFFIC and flautist and saxophonist extraordinaire. Recorded just after the demise of TRAFFIC in 1974, "Vulcan" was begun for Island records but shelved in 1978. The sessions featured contributions from STEVE WINWOOD and members of THE WAILERS, along with a live recording of TRAFFIC performing the title track in 1974, but due to a change in musical fashion with the advent of Punk, the album failed to see the light of day. Island boss Chris Blackwell returned the tapes to Chris Wood in the late 1970's. Following Chris' untimely death in 1983 the tapes were passed on to his sister, Stephanie. Now, 25 years later, and after three years of research and preparation, Esoteric have pieced together the sessions in co-operation with Stephanie Wood to bring you "Vulcan."

First ever UK CD releases for these classic albums from the master percussionist and ambient musician - all remastered from the original master tapes.  Stomu Yamashta is a master percussionist who studied jazz drumming at Berklee School of Jazz. In the 1970's he recorded a string of innovative albums for Island Records which utilized the talents of such leading musicians as Hugh Hopper, Morris Pert, Steve Winwood, Michael Shrieve and Klaus Schulze and more, fusing his percussion talents with jazz, electronic and classical music to create an ambient form of music all of his own. His music has been used by the Royal Ballet. His first Island album, "Floating Music" was recorded with the band Come to the Edge, which included Morris Pert, and gains its first European CD release with this reissue. "Poker Dice" and "One Way" were used by Nicholas Roeg in the soundtrack of the David Bowie film The Man Who Fell to Earth. Originally released in 1973 for Island Records, "The Man from the East" was the soundtrack to a fascinating theatre-piece Yamashta presented in Paris and London in 1972. 'Memory of Hiroshima' also appeared on the film soundtrack of The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976) and, with 'Poker Dice' and 'One Way,' has since attained mythical status among fans.   Originally released in 1974 on Island Records, "One By One" was the soundtrack to the racing movie directed by Claude du Boc. This Esoteric Recordings reissue marks the album's debut on CD and has been remastered from the original master tapes.   Originally released in April 1976, "Go" is perhaps Yamashta's finest achievement and also featured collaborators Steve Winwood and Michael Shrieve along with artists such as Klaus Schulze, Al Di Meola and ex-Traffic and future Can bassist Rosko Gee.
