The year 2003 saw the inception of Eclectic Discs, the home of good music and the label of choice for discerning music lovers throughout the world. Eclectic's releases quickly became regarded as the watchword for quality packaging and superb remastering in the world of both catalogue reissues and frontline releases by classic artists, with over fifty individual titles released by the label.
Now, the people who brought you Eclectic Discs bring you Esoteric Recordings, a new identity, but still a home for good music with the emphasis on quality packaged and remastered catalogue reissues and inspiring new works from artists with a history and heritage. Esoteric is an exciting part of a new chapter for label manager Mark Powell that began with Eclectic Discs, and continues as part of the Cherry Red group of labels. Mark said "Cherry Red Records is the oldest independent record label in Britain, born of the glory days of the UK indie music scene of the late 1970's. Whilst their compatriots have either gone by the wayside or have become part of multi-national corporations, Cherry Red have always stayed true to their ideals. It's an exciting prospect to establish Esoteric Recordings within the company and to be part of their continuing story. I'm looking forward immensely to working with Ian McNay, Adam Velasco and all at Cherry Red to develop Esoteric into an identity to be proud of."
The first releases on Esoteric will appear in September 2007 and will feature titles by Rare Bird, Egg, Gong leader Daevid Allen, Paladin, Marsupilami, Big Sleep and a 2CD anthology by British progressive jazz rock outfit Jonesy. In addition the label will be releasing frontline products in the form of the first ever DVD and a new live album recorded by John Lees' Barclay James Harvest at Shepherd's Bush Empire, London in November 2006.

First ever UK CD releases for these classic albums from the master percussionist and ambient musician - all remastered from the original master tapes. Stomu Yamashta is a master percussionist who studied jazz drumming at Berklee School of Jazz. In the 1970's he recorded a string of innovative albums for Island Records which utilized the talents of such leading musicians as Hugh Hopper, Morris Pert, Steve Winwood, Michael Shrieve and Klaus Schulze and more, fusing his percussion talents with jazz, electronic and classical music to create an ambient form of music all of his own. His music has been used by the Royal Ballet. His first Island album, "Floating Music" was recorded with the band Come to the Edge, which included Morris Pert, and gains its first European CD release with this reissue. "Poker Dice" and "One Way" were used by Nicholas Roeg in the soundtrack of the David Bowie film The Man Who Fell to Earth. Originally released in 1973 for Island Records, "The Man from the East" was the soundtrack to a fascinating theatre-piece Yamashta presented in Paris and London in 1972. 'Memory of Hiroshima' also appeared on the film soundtrack of The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976) and, with 'Poker Dice' and 'One Way,' has since attained mythical status among fans. Originally released in 1974 on Island Records, "One By One" was the soundtrack to the racing movie directed by Claude du Boc. This Esoteric Recordings reissue marks the album's debut on CD and has been remastered from the original master tapes. Originally released in April 1976, "Go" is perhaps Yamashta's finest achievement and also featured collaborators Steve Winwood and Michael Shrieve along with artists such as Klaus Schulze, Al Di Meola and ex-Traffic and future Can bassist Rosko Gee. The Esoteric reissue has been remastered from the original master tapes and fully restores the booklet included in the original vinyl release. Graham Bond was at the vanguard of 60s British musicians pioneering fusions of jazz, r'n'b and the newly emerging rock sensibility, most notably in his own seminal Graham Bond Organisation, which included the likes of Ginger Baker, Jack Bruce, Dick Heckstall-Smith and, briefly, John McLaughlin. New CD release for this classic album from the masters of Sci Fi Rock - remastered from the original tapes with two bonus tracks. Co-writer of Silver Machine, a member of Hawkwind, famed poet, author and lyricist, Calvert released "Freq" in January 1985. The album was originally recorded August 1984 in Computer Music Studio, London for Flicknife records and was inspired by the 1984 miners' strike and the effect it had on miners, their families and British politics. One of the most intelligent songwriters in the progressive-rock field, displayed in both his recorded and published work an informed and compassionate concern for the world around him, all of which is reflected in "Freq," a concept album dealing with automation in the workplace, industrial decline, unemployment, and the overall mechanization of man. This reissue appears on a new Cherry Red imprint, Atomhenge, managed by the people at Esoteric Recordings. "Freq" is remastered from the original tapes and adds the 1980 single "Lord of the Hornets" and its b-side, "The Greenfly and the Rose."

Perhaps better known for their later albums "Theraphosa Blondi" and the classic "I Spider" (both available on Esoteric Recordings), "Fully Interlocking" was the debut album by the band, prior to their transformation into a fully fledged progressive outfit . First released in 1968, the record has been described as having "a tint of 60's psychedelia with jazz-influences and a few early progressive tendencies." Fronted by American vocalist John L. Quintessence came from the Ladbroke Grove scene of the late 1960's. A group of musicians who became darlings of the hippy scene and the underground press along with contemporaries HAWKWIND. Quintessence played a freaky form of rock music that embraced Indian music, psychedelia and jazz. They came to public attention in 1969 when they signed to Island records, for whom they recorded three classic albums. The legendary CURVED AIR recorded a string of innovative & classic albums in the 70's to great acclaim, enjoying a global hit with "Back Street Luv" in 1971. Darryl Way was founder member of the legendary CURVED AIR, a group that brought Way's strident electric violin playing to the fore on a string of hit albums. In 1973, Way formed WOLF, a progressive outfit featuring guitarist John Etheridge, bassist Dek Messecar (later in CARAVAN) and drummer Ian Mosley (now in MARILLION). The music was a heady mixture of styles and secured the band a contract with Decca's DERAM label. "Canis Lupus" was the group's debut, produced by KING CRIMSON member Ian McDonald (who also guested on the record). The Esoteric edition of Canis Lupus features two bonus tracks. "Saturation Point" was the group's second album and followed on from their innovative "Canis Lupus" LP and includes three bonus tracks. "Night Music" was the final album in the WOLF trilogy and perhaps the finest. With the band augmented by former "IF" vocalist John Hodgkinson, the album is a lost classic of 70's rock. This first ever UK CD reissues of these albums are remastered from the original tapes and includes expanded artwork and is released to coincide with CURVED AIR's reformation and appearance at the ISLE OF WIGHT festival in June 2008.

Satisfaction was a short lived jazz influenced progressive outfit formed by trumpet and horn player Mike Cotton, a veteran of the early '60's British R&B boom. The group also included John Beecham (trombone), Derek Griffiths (guitar, vocals), Bernie Higginson (drums, vocals), Lem Lubin (saxophone) and Nick Newell (saxophone). John Beecham had previously been in the Mike Cotton Sound, whilst Griffiths had been a member of the highly regarded Artwoods with Keef Hartley and Jon Lord. By the late 1960's jazz was crashing headlong into the world of rock and Mike Cotton assembled a group of like minded musicians to explore the musical possibilities in this area. Signing to Decca in 1971, the group worked with producer David Hitchcock on the eponymous album. This ESOTERIC RECORDINGS reissue marks the album's debut on CD. Recently hailed by RECORD COLLECTOR magazine as "The finest vocalist you've never heard," CLAIRE HAMILL has enjoyed a long and varied career as one of Britain's finest female singer songwriters. Signing to Island Records in 1971 at the age of 17, she made a series of wonderful albums in the 1970's. The singer EVA CASSIDY covered Claire's "You Take My Breath Away" and Claire's influence extends to artists such as KATE BUSH. In the 1980's Claire's music embraced the ambient movement and following work with artists such as JON & VANGELIS, Claire recorded the wonderful album "Voices," a record featuring solely vocal sounds that topped the UK New Age Chart and was the soundtrack to BBC TV's "Domesday" series. She followed this in 1988 with the equally excellent song based "LOVE IN THE AFTERNOON", featuring the classic "Trees." Originally released in 1973, "Back into the Future" was the first UK chart album for Welsh rock legends, MAN. A fabulous double album, the set originally comprised a studio album and a live LP recorded at the Roundhouse in June 1973. For this set MAN were joined on stage by a male voice choir, possibly the only time spaced out free flowing rock had fused with the unique sound of Welsh voices. The result was a wonderful album which charted in the UK and Germany and broke MAN to a wider audience in Britain. As part of ESOTERIC's reissue programme of the MAN catalogue we are proud to present the remastered album and two bonus discs of MAN's entire Roundhouse set. In 1975, following his departure from GONG, the highly influential group he had founded, Daevid Allen sought musical solace in the village of Deja on the island of Mallorca. Here he encountered a group of Catalan musicians, Euterpe, with whom Allen began a collaboration. Recorded in Mallorca, the album "GOOD MORNING" was released by Virgin Records in 1976 to great acclaim, being a unique work that was regarded by fans and critics as being equally as good as anything he recorded with GONG, if not better. Filled with Allen's startling original musical observations, "GOOD MORNING" appeared briefly on CD in the early 1990's and vanished quickly. Big Sleep were a Welsh band whose inflence was far beyond their sole album offering released in 1971. The band members (formerly with EYES OF BLUE) would all soon head for greater things in bands such as GENTLE GIANT, MAN and WILD TURKEY (formed by ex-Jethro Tull bassist Glenn Cornick) and RICK WAKEMAN's band. An album that features many fine songs and styles, "Bluebell Wood," (originally released on the highly collectable PAGASUS label), has been sought after by collectors for many years thanks to its influence and place in the history of British progressive rock and in the annals of Welsh rock. The band recorded two superb albums for Decca Records between 1969 & 1971 before going their separate ways. In 1974 they recorded their final album for the newly established Virgin Record label. Andy Fairweather Low's classic progressive album - now 24-bit remastered with 6 bonus tracks! Following the demise of AMEN CORNER, Andy Fairweather Low and fellow musical cohorts Blue Weaver, Clive Taylor and Dennis Byron underwent a musical transition into the band FAIR WEATHER. Heading into a "Progressive" direction the band adopted a harder edge and were the first act to sign to RCA Records' progressive imprint NEON (an attempt to rival Philips' VERTIGO label). Perhaps the most successful NEON signing, the band secured a UK TOP TEN hit in "Natural Sinner" before releasing their sole album, "Beginning from an End". Featuring guest contributions from DAVE EDMUNDS on "I Hear You Knockin'," although the album was a success in Europe, FAIR WEATHER lasted a mere 13 months before disbanding. This ESOTERIC reissue gathers together the album and six tracks released over three singles to comprise this definitive edition remastered reissue.
Gary Farr/Strange Fruit ....import CD $18.99
Gary Farr's long lost classic folk rock album - now 24-bit remastered from the original master tapes with bonus tracks. "Strange Fruit" is a great undiscovered work of the acoustic rock/classic rock genres, cited by some as a minor masterpiece. In the late 60's Gary Farr made the transition from leader of R&B outfit The T-Bones to a noted singer-songwriter. Recording an album for Marmalade Records, Farr then signed to CBS Records in 1970, recording this sole album for the label. Sessions featured contributions from RICHARD THOMPSON on lead guitar and leading lights of the underground MIGHTY BABY. Unavailable on CD for many years, "Strange Fruit" is a record made by an often overlooked singer-songwriter made available once more by Esoteric Recordings and is certain to appeal to all who adore acoustic music both melancholic and uplifting. The reissue also features the first ever CD appearance of the single edit of "Revolution of the Season."

The possessor of one of the finest voices in popular music, Claire Hamill signed to Island records at the age of 16, recording two albums which featured contributions from JOHN MARTYN, FREE & TERRY REID. Released in March 1971, "Arena" was the second and final album by the group Marsupilami. Initially a folk-based group the band evolved into one of the most adventurous, if unsung, bands of the early 1970s, producing two stunningly original Mellotron soaked albums. Classic progressive rock album - now 24-bit remastered from the original master tapes! "Samurai" is truly a lost classic of the Progressive era. Released on the short lived Greenwich Gramophone label in 1972, the album was influenced by the experiments of groups such as KING CRIMSON, GENTLE GIANT et al, but was more than a mere clone of these bands. Evolving from the equally excellent band WEB (whose album "I Spider" is a classic of the genre), the musicianship on the album was excellent and Keyboard player DAVE LAWSON's compositions were groundbreaking and memorable. Sadly the group disbanded shortly after the release of the record resulting in limited sales. However, the influence of the album was not lost as both DAVE LAWSON and TONY REEVES soon joined DAVE GREENSLADE to form the group GREENSLADE, effectively taking up the musical mantle laid down by SAMURAI. This Esoteric reissue features a booklet with previously unseen photographs and an interview with DAVE LAWSON.

STUD were formed in 1970 by RICHARD McCRACKEN and JOHN WILSON (from the recently disbanded band TASTE who featured RORY GALLAGHER) and JIM CREGAN (of BLOSSOM TOES and later in FAMILY). The album they recorded for Decca's DERAM label was an amalgam of rock and jazz and was an outstanding "progressive" album of its time. Featured in the soundtrack of the film "Control" about Joy Division, SUPERSISTER were one of the most original groups to emerge in Holland in the late 1960's. Inspired by the work of SOFT MACHINE and CARAVAN, the group recorded a quartet of master works. In 1971 they signed to JOHN PEEL's Dandelion label and remained a favourite of his. Eccentric, accomplished and unique, SUPERSISTER's albums are a joy to any fan of original music. THE WEB are perhaps best known for their Progressive rock classic "I SPIDER," an album of innovation that continues to draw comparisons with the work of VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR at that time. THE WEB began life as a jazz and soul influenced outfit, fronted by singer JOHN L. WATSON, enjoying Top Ten hit singles throughout Europe.
