Pink Floyd/Delicate Sound of Thunder ....DVD $25.99
Pink Floyd/Delicate Sound of Thunder ....Blu-Ray $33.99
Pink Floyd/Delicate Sound of Thunder [Deluxe Edition] ....2 CD + DVD + Blu-Ray Box Set $85.99
The first break out package from the Pink Floyd 'The Later Years' set, Delicate Sound of Thunder, has been remixed, restored and re-edited on DVD and Blu-Ray. Alongside the full concert film (restored and re-edited from the original 35mm film and enhanced with 5.1 surround sound), included in The Later Years box set, the DVD and Blu-Ray features a 24-page photo booklet. In 1987, Pink Floyd made a triumphant resurgence. The legendary British band, formed in 1967, had suffered the loss of two co-founders: keyboardist / vocalist Richard Wright, who left after sessions for The Wall in 1979, and bass player and lyricist Roger Waters, who had left to go solo in 1985, soon after the 1983 album The Final Cut. The gauntlet was thus laid down for guitarist/singer David Gilmour and drummer Nick Mason, who proceeded to create the multi-platinum A Momentary Lapse of Reason album, a global chart smash, which also saw the return of Richard Wright to the fold. Originally released in September 1987, A Momentary Lapse of Reason was quickly embraced by fans worldwide, who flocked to attend the live tour dates, which started within days of the album's release. The tour played to more than 4.25 million fans over more than two years, and, as a celebration of the enduring talent and global appeal of Pink Floyd, was unsurpassed at the time. Filmed at Long Island's Nassau Coliseum in August 1988 and directed by Wayne Isham, the 2020 release of the Grammy Award nominated Delicate Sound of Thunder is sourced directly from over 100 cans of original 35mm negatives, painstakingly restored and transferred to 4K, and completely re-edited by Benny Trickett from the restored and upgraded footage, under the creative direction of Aubrey Powell/Hipgnosis. Similarly, the sound was completely remixed from the original multitrack tapes by longtime Pink Floyd engineer Andy Jackson with Pink Floyd's David Gilmour, assisted by Damon Iddins. Pink Floyd's stellar supporting cast for the live dates included: Jon Carin (Keyboards, Vocals), Tim Renwick (Guitars, Vocals), Guy Pratt (Bass, Vocals), Gary Wallis (Percussion), Scott Page (Saxophones, Guitar), Margret Taylor (Backing Vocals), Rachel Fury (Backing Vocals) and Durga McBroom (Backing Vocals). The setlist carefully balances the then-new material and Pink Floyd classics, including songs from The Dark Side of the Moon ("Time", "On The Run", "The Great Gig in the Sky" and "Us and Them"), the anthemic title track of Wish You Were Here, The Wall's "Comfortably Numb" and a cathartic "Run Like Hell." As a record of the creative power of David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright at their incendiary best, Pink Floyd's Delicate Sound of Thunder is an engrossing and uplifting event, to be enjoyed by any rock music fan. 2-CD includes 8 tracks more than its original release. Blu-ray: Stereo PCM 96/24 / DVD: Stereo PCM 48/16. Deluxe Box includes 2-CD (23 Songs), Blu-ray (21 songs inc. 5 Bonus Tracks), DVD (21 songs inc. 5 Bonus Tracks), 40-Page Booklet, Double Sided Poster, 5 Postcards.
Yes/The Royal Affair Tour - Live from Las Vegas ....CD $15.99

In their imperial years of the 1970s, Tangerine Dream's live concerts were an electronic exploration, improvised and different every night, with little or no relationship to their smash hit albums, which were similarly esoteric. As the 1980s dawned, their recorded work contained more recognizable themes and they scored some of the biggest films of the decade (Risky Business, Firestarter, Near Dark, Thief, Sorcerer).

Gong/Radio Gnome Invisible Trilogy ....4 CD Set $25.99

Dedicated to the memory and ongoing legacy of Daevid Allen.
Gong/Flying Teapot ....CD $14.99
1973's Flying Teapot is a Gong milestone. It's the first installment in their legendary "Radio Gnome Trilogy" and a transitional point between the underground psychedelia of Camembert Electrique and the artier, more ethereal sound they later developed. Teapot is more visceral, less cerebral than it's successors, and the catchy ensemble riffs of Camembert are still present. The arrival of virtuoso guitarist Steve Hillage and synth wizard Tim Blake represented a great leap forward, though. Blake concentrated exclusively on ambient electronic effects and soundscapes a la early Hawkind, leaving harmonic development to the other band members. Hillage's fleet-fingered jazz-rock solos and arsenal of effects upped the musicianship a notch and reinforced the spacy jazz elements already in place. Whether you're able to follow the willfully confusing storyline or not, the elaborate mythological world created by Daevid Allen is loads of fun when wrapped around music as inspired as this psychedelic art-jazz-space rock amalgam. The key players are a group of gnomes from another planet who arrive in a flying teapot (stoner imagery plays heavily in hippie Allen's vision) to save the world (or something). Actually, some surprisingly intellectual/philosophical messages were contained in the trilogy, leavened heartily by the irrepressible Allen's healthy sense of humor.
Roger Chapman & The Shortlist/Maybe the Last Time: Live 2011 ....CD $14.99

Ryuichi Sakamoto with Adrian Belew/Hidari Ude No Yume [Left Handed Dream] ....import CD $22.99
Wewantsounds present the reissue of Ryuichi Sakamoto's third solo album Hidari Ude No Yume (Left Handed Dream), originally released in 1981 on the Alfa label. Save for a small-scale Dutch vinyl release in 1981, it is the first time the album's original Japanese edition is released outside of Japan (the European release on Epic Records included significantly different tracks and mixes). Hidari Ude No Yume was recorded at the legendary Alfa Studio "A" in Tokyo during the Summer of 1981. it came after B-2 Unit in 1980 and his debut album Thousand Knives Of... in 1978, the very year Sakamoto was invited by Haruomi Hosono to join Yellow Magic Orchestra alongside Yukihiro Takahashi. In 1981, Sakamoto decided to record an album rooted in pop, following the more experimental B-2 Unit and his landmark electro debut. Sakamoto invited British producer Robin Scott to co-produce. They entered the Alfa studio in July 1981 with his fellow YMO musicians Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi, keyboard programmer extraordinaire Hideki Matsutake who'd been on Sakamoto's first two albums and became YMO's unofficial fourth member, violinist Kaoru Sato, saxophonist Satoshi Nakamura, and American guitarist Adrian Belew (David Bowie, The Talking Heads, Tom Tom Club and later King Crimson). Together, they created a fascinating mix of pop, ambient and electronic music with elements of avant-garde and traditional Japanese music, the whole firmly rooted in a solid groove. From the funk of "Relache" to the new wave feel of "Venezia" and the ambient minimalism of "Slat Dance," the album is remarkably consistent while displaying a wealth of global influences. The album was released in Japan in 1981 and Epic Records picked it up for Europe a year later but decided to release it in a significantly altered version. The sequencing was completely reshuffled and two tracks, "Saru No Ie" and "Living in the Dark" were completely dropped while three others, "Relache," "Tell 'em To Me," "Venezia" were heavily remodeled with English lyrics and different names. Last but not least, a new English-sung track, "The Arrangement," was added, making the album nine tracks instead of ten for the Japanese edition. Newly remastered from the original tapes by renowned engineer Bernie Grundman. Comes with original artwork featuring cover shot by famous photographer Masayoshi Sukita. Four-page insert with new introduction by journalist Anton Spice.

Gary Husband & Markus Reuter/Music of Our Time ....CD $17.99
Yet another facet of two contemporary genii is revealed. Maestros Gary Husband and Markus Reuter embark on an impromptu journey of both mind and soul, in one of the most unique, timeless efforts ever to grace the MoonJune label - or, for that matter, the improvised and avant-garde genre - with the release of 'Music of Our Time.' Inspired by the house's beautiful Fazoli Pianoforti grand piano, Gary Husband unveils new depths of his unique musical prodigy. Markus Reuter proves the perfect compliment, kinetically synchronized in effortless perfection to his partner's every shift and turn - with graceful elegance, and rich textures providing spacious understatement throughout proceedings. The chemistry between artists takes its immediate and obvious form through their mutual reverence of the musical moment at hand, exhibited through seemingly telepathic interplay and dynamics. The result is a priceless gem. 'Music of Our Time' is a lustrous jewel of exquisite beauty and magnificent stature ... an ethereal creation, which ventures to places and spaces music rarely accesses.
Oz Noy/Snapdragon ....CD $16.99
Constantly seeking untapped musical terrain, New York-based guitarist and composer Oz Noy steps onto fertile ground with Snapdragon. The spry rhythmic wallop that characterized his previous album, the backbeat-driven Booga Looga Loo, remains in full force -- only now welded to an open, bop-inflected chromaticism fostering a more dynamic, searching improvisational energy. Intricately winding unison melody lines spiral out across fatback rhythmscapes, expertly realized by an impressive cast of soloists and supporting musicians. Among those stoking the fires of the rhythm section are Dennis Chambers, Will Lee, Vinnie Colaiuta, Dave Weckl, James Genus, and John Patitiucci, while Noy trades improvised solos and notated melodies with saxophonist Chris Potter, keyboardists David Kikoski and Jason Lindner, trumpeter John Sneider, guitarist Adam Rogers, and the recently deceased trumpet Wallace Rooney, whose subtly blues-tinged solo glides over the nimble rhythmic modulations of "Outer Look."
Al Stewart/24 Carrots [40th Anniversary Edition] ....import 3 CD Set $28.99
Esoteric Recordings is proud to announce the release of a newly re-mastered and expanded 3 CD 40th Anniversary edition of the classic album 24 Carrots by Al Stewart. Released in 1980, the album came on the heels of a series of highly successful albums Year of the Cat and Time Passages, which saw the legendary folk-rock musician reach a wider audience and, after adopting a more rock orientated approach, gain top ten success in the USA where he had relocated. For the album 24 Carrots he worked with the musicians in the band Shot in the Dark featuring his musical collaborator Peter White (keyboards, guitar), Adam Yurman (electric guitar), Robin Lamble (bass, guitar), Krysia Kristianne (backing vocals), Brian Savage (saxophone, flute), Robin Marlette (keyboards) and various drummers including Steve Chapman and Jeff Porcaro. It also featured a guest appearance by Robin Williamson (Incredible String Band). Sessions for the album began at Davlen studios in Los Angeles in August 1979 where Al worked with Shot in the Dark on a series of demos of some compositions that would make up the album, and others which would remain consigned to the vaults. When completed in May 1980 the album would feature classic tracks such as 'Running Man,' 'Merlin's Time,' 'Murmansk Run - Ellis Island' and the US top thirty hit single 'Midnight Rocks.' Upon its release in August 1980, 24 Carrots would be another American Top Forty hit and would also be a success in other European countries. This 40th anniversary edition of 24 Carrots has been newly expanded from the original first-generation master tapes and includes two rare single mixes previously unreleased on CD and two additional CDs featuring the August 1979 Davlen studios demo sessions (including an early studio version of The World Goes to Riyadh) and a CD of live recordings made at Hammersmith Odeon in London in December 1980 on the 24 Carrots tour. The release also includes an illustrated booklet with an exclusive new interview with Al Stewart. This 40th anniversary edition serves as a fine tribute to a fine album and a consummate songwriter and performer.

Trees/Trees ....4 CD Set $47.99
It's now over fifty years since Trees' formation and, although 'acid folk' has now become a sub-category in the lexicon of record dealers and music critics, and although founder member David Costa feels the original noughties reissue helped consolidate a gathering wave of curiosity, they themselves remain in the shadows. Earth's new Trees collection brings together both albums adding shiny alternate mixes of key tracks along with a selection of radio sessions and demos, all sounding brighter and cleaner than ever before. Trees first album, 'The Garden of Jane Delawney' (1970) snuggles nicely into contemporary nu-folkies' idea of the genre, and shares some of the pastoral-whimsy that characterised The Incredible String Band or Donovan, offset by some stunning interpretations of traditional material and Bias' own songs, which were somehow part of the tradition Trees had adopted. Readings of 'Lady Margaret,' 'Glasgerion' and the old standard 'She Moved thro' the Fair,' and the extended fade of the group's own 'Road,' presage the explosive instrumental duelling that would come to characterize the follow-up album, 'On the Shore.' There's a definite shift between the records, the second being darker and more ambivalent. Here Trees don't tell you what to think. You're left to formulate your own response to this odd, opaque music. The 'Streets of Derry' session version leans into the brain vibrating drone-groove they somehow found at the traditional tune's centre. 'Polly on the Shore,' another traditional tune, is one of the definitive moments of English folk-rock.
Various Artists/Sumer Is Icumen In: The Pagan Sound of British & Irish Folk 1966-1975 ....import 3 CD Set $37.99
Released in 2015, Grapefruit's 3-CD multi-artist British underground folk compilation Dust on the Nettles was widely praised, with a five-star review in The Times hailing it as "a delight from beginning to end." A long-overdue follow up to that set, Sumer Is Icumen In tightens the mesh by focusing on the point when traditional folksong and the burgeoning late Sixties counterculture collided, largely courtesy of seminal acts like the Incredible String Band, Fairport Convention and Pentangle. As Steeleye Span's Martin Carthy commented at the time, the scene had a strong pagan feel, dark and elemental, and progressive folk bands like Dr. Strangely Strange, Comus and Third Ear Band (who performed with the druids in dawn solstice ceremonies at Glastonbury Tor) were active at the same time as folklorists like Mr. Fox pair Bob & Carole Pegg and fellow husband-and-wife team Dave & Toni Arthur, whose commitment to the cause saw them dancing naked at a coven led by 'King of the Witches,' the notorious Alex Sanders. Showcasing all of the above names as well as a supporting cast that ranges from Mike Oldfield and Marc Bolan to unsigned bands who recorded demos in a barn, Sumer Is Icumen In features four hours of Albion hymns ancient and modern, including three previously unreleased cuts. Housed in a stylish clamshell box, it includes a 40-page booklet with track-by-track annotation, numerous band quotes and some very rare photos. The result is a secret glade in a darkly pagan woodland that's peppered with invocations of corn gods, wicker men, bright Phoebus and other non-Christian deities; magickal tales of daemons, sorcerers, false knights and faerie queens; the medieval England myths, legends and traditions of the May Queen, John Barleycorn and the Green Man; paeans to the natural world and the rhythm of the passing seasons; fables of sanctuary stones, scarecrows and buried villages alongside dread stories of purgatory, sacrifice, rape, bestiality and murder.
The Free Design/Butterflies Are Free - The Original Recordings 1967-72 ....import 4 CD Set $37.99
The Dedrick children, Chris, his brother Bruce, their sister Sandra and their younger sisters Ellen and Stefanie, were born into a world of music. Their father, Art, was a trombonist and arranger, their mother a music teacher who played French horn. Uncle Rusty, a jazz trumpeter with Red Norvo. Under the influence of the Hi-Lo's and Peter, Paul and Mary, The Free Design rose through the folk scene of the Greenwich Village coffee houses, achieving national prominence with the enchanting 'Kites Are Fun.' They would prove to be at least the artistic equals of such popular contemporaries as The Association, The Mamas and the Papas, The Fifth Dimension and Harper's Bizarre, but without quite matching their commercial success. Rather than be dictated to and diluted by the majors, they chose to commit to the artistic freedom and potential to develop offered them by the producer Enoch Light through his independent set up, Project 3. While his label might not have been able to provide the resources of a Columbia or RCA, he believed in the group, gave them carte blanche and hired some of the finest session musicians in New York to back them. The decision to put their art first was justified by the extraordinary quality of the seven albums recorded between 1967 and 1972. We have Enoch Light's vision and the group's brave decision to stick to their guns to thank for the fact that this splendid music exists today. With exceptions, The Free Design were at their most pure in recordings of their own compositions. 'Kites Are Fun,' 'Bubbles,' 'Kije's Ouija,' 'My Brother Woody,' 'Ivy on a Windy Day,' 'Starlight,' 'Daniel Dolphin,' 'I'm a Yogi,' 'My Very Own Angel,' and the 'Dorian Benediction,' each adorned by the baroque fantasy quality which is uniquely theirs. Breathtakingly original songs full of playful, nostalgic lyrical imagery; sometimes surprisingly dark; always enormously listenable. Whilst the arrangements reflected Chris Dedrick's classical training and eclectic taste, the beautifully detailed sound must be attributed - at least in part - to the legendary sound engineer Phil Ramone, a magician whose emphasis on subtlety and nuance in performance conceived such creations as 'The Girl from Ipanema' by Astrud Gilberto, 'Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard' by Paul Simon, the Bob Dylan album, "Blood on the Tracks," and, of course, 'Bubbles' by The Free Design.
Jimi Hendrix Experience/Live in Maui ....2 CD + Blu-Ray $29.99
Experience Hendrix announces a brand new collection that couples the brand new feature length documentary Music, Money, Madness... Jimi Hendrix in Maui with the accompanying live performances on both audio and video. The film chronicles the Jimi Hendrix Experience's storied visit to Maui, their performance on the dormant lower crater of Haleakala volcano on the island and how the band became ensnared with the ill-fated Rainbow Bridge movie produced by their controversial manager Michael Jeffery. Directed by John McDermott and produced by Janie Hendrix, George Scott and McDermott, the documentary incorporates never before released original footage and new interviews with firsthand participants and key players such as Billy Cox, Eddie Kramer, Warner Bros. executives and several Rainbow Bridge cast members, as well as it's director Chuck Wein. The Blu-ray will include the full documentary as well as the 16mm color film shot of the two afternoon performances captured on July 30, 1970 mixed in both stereo and 5.1 surround sound. Also included in the package will be Live in Maui - both of the aforementioned sets spread across 2 CDs, newly restored and mixed by longtime Jimi Hendrix engineer Eddie Kramer, and mastered by Bernie Grundman. The two sets finds The Experience - Hendrix, Billy Cox on bass, Mitch Mitchell on drums - at the height of it's powers playing flawlessly against a stunning natural backdrop. Included are breathtaking renditions of crowd favorites like "Foxey Lady, " "Purple Haze" and "Voodoo Child (Slight Return), " as well as then-unreleased songs like "Dolly Dagger" and "Freedom" that showcased the new direction Hendrix was moving toward.
Deep Purple/Live in Paris 1985 ....CD $14.99
Rare and collectable live recording from Deep Purple's legendary show in Paris 1985 - digitally remastered. Deep Purple's many sides are at their best here: the energy but also the groove and the great solo moments. The soft sides and their energetic heavy counterparts. Every member of the band is in fantastic form, the band being strong, and the performance seems to be driving the band through the songs as if audience and band were suspended in time.
Iron Butterfly/Unconscious Power - An Anthology 1967-1971 [Remastered] ....import 7 CD Box Set $59.99
Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce the release of Unconcious Power - An Anthology 1967 - 1971, a newly remastered 7 CD boxed set featuring all of the albums and singles recorded by the legendary American acid / progressive rock band Iron Butterfly recorded for Atlantic's Atco label between 1967 and 1971 and additional recordings made at the Fillmore East in New York City in April 1968. Iron Butterfly first came together in San Diego, California in 1966 with a line-up of Doug Ingle (vocals, organ), Danny Weis (guitar), Greg Willis (bass), Jack Pinney (drums) and Darryl DeLoach (vocals). After performing in the San Diego area the band relocated to Los Angeles in search of a recording contract, with Willis soon departing to be replaced by Jerry Penrod on bass. Jack Pinney also departed and was eventually replaced by Ron Bushy. The band's psychedelic and acid rock style was honed during regular appearances at LA venues such as the Whisky a Go Go and the Galaxy Club, which saw Iron Butterfly develop a loyal following and led to the band signing with Atlantic's Atco label in 1967. In October that year the band recorded their debut album, Heavy, but the group would endure further line-up changes prior to its release as Jerry Penrod, Danny Weis and Darryl DeLoach departed soon after recording sessions were completed. Faced with the possibility of the album remaining unreleased, Ingle and Bushy recruited 17 year old guitarist Erik Brann and bassist Lee Dorman to the band. Heavy was released in January 1968, entering the US Billboard charts and eventually earning gold disc status. The album In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, issued in June 1968, would break the band into star status. Dominated by the side long title track featuring the instrumental dexterity of the new line-up, it was a masterpiece of acid rock and reached a height of number 4 in the US charts and went on to sell a million copies. An edited version of the title track was issued as a single and reached the US top thirty. The band's third album, Ball, was released in January 1969 and was even more successful, reaching number 3 in the US and spawning the hit singles Soul Experience and In the Time of Our Lives. The band undertook a punishing touring schedule and a series on concerts were recorded in May 1969, finally to be issued as Live in April 1970. Erik Brann departed the band in December 1969 and was replaced by guitarist and vocalist Mike Pinera and additional guitarist Larry Reinhardt. This line-up would record the album Metamorphosis in May 1970 which saw the band take a heavier direction. The dominant track on the record was the excellent thirteen minute Butterfly Bleu which saw one of the earliest uses of a "talk box" on a guitar solo. Following a tour with Yes in early 1971, Doug Ingle announced his departure from the band. After releasing a final single, Silly Sally in April 1971, Iron Butterfly disbanded. Although they would reform in the mid-1970s and continue to perform and record sporadically afterwards, their recorded work for Atco Records remains their main legacy. Unconcious Power - An Anthology 1967 - 1971 features all of the albums issued on Atco, all newly re-mastered from the original master tapes, and additionally includes the rare mono mixes of the albums Heavy and Live, (the only true separate mono mixes of their albums), both previously unreleased on CD, along with two CDs of recordings made at the Fillmore East in New York City on the 26th and 27th April 1968. It also includes all of the band's US non-album singles and single edits and a lavishly illustrated booklet with a new essay featuring interviews with Ron Bushy and Mike Pinera and a poster.
Allman Brothers Band/Final Note ....CD $14.99
Live archive release containing the Allman Brothers Band's last show with founder and guitarist Duane Allman. Recorded October 17, 1971 at the Painters Mill Music Fair in Owings Mills, MD, the recording marks Duane's last show, as he was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident 12 days later. Recorded on a hand-held cassette machine by 18-year-old radio journalist Sam Idas. The Allman Brothers Band were riding a wave of great success in late 1971 and wrapped up an intense summer of touring with the two shows at Painters Mill that day. The July 1971 release of their breakthrough At Fillmore East live album had brought them critical acclaim, hordes of new fans, and even a little money. The band - Duane Allman, Gregg Allman, Dickey Betts, Jaimoe, Butch Trucks and Berry Oakley - had toured all summer long and were looking forward to some time off before heading back to the studio.
Traffic/Live in Birmingham 1974 ....CD $14.99
Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi, Dave Mason, and Chris Wood met at a club in Aston, Birmingham in the mid-1960s. At the time Winwood was performing with The Spencer Davis Group, but when he quit in April 1967, the quartet formed Traffic. They performed an extraordinary concert in their hometown in Birmingham in 1974, which was broadcast on FAN-FM and is featured on this CD. The quite superb performance all the hits: Heaven Is in Your Mind, When the Eagle Flies and Walking in the Wind.
Medicine Head/New Bottles Old Medicine [50th Anniversary Edition] ....import CD $22.99
Discovered, signed and enthusiastically promoted by John Peel via both his BBC radio shows and his Dandelion Records label, Medicine Head produced one of the enduring albums of 1970 in "New Bottles..." A blues-inspired, post psychedelia cycle of heartfelt, raw originals, the album was a forerunner of what we would now consider 'lo fi' production (the debut single, included here, was famously encouraged by John Lennon, who insisted it be issued in its raw state), and proved the beginning of long and fruitful careers for both John Fiddler and Peter Hope-Evans. Accompanied simply, with guitar, jaw harp and kick drum, the duo concocted something timeless, its heart firmly on its sleeve and its influences and aspirations to the fore. Presented alongside non-album singles, BBC recordings and live renditions recorded at The Marquee, this expanded version of "New Bottles Old Medicine" rightfully places this wonderful album under the microscope, freshly contextualised by the bonus material and an insightful, fittingly eccentric sleeve essay from Brian Banks. On-the-record enthusiasts for 'New Bottles Old Medicine' over the years include Bobby Gillespie, Nico, Joe Perry and Jack White, giving some sense of the broad appeal of this unique piece of work.
Sensitive to Light: The Rainbow Story [Martin Popoff] ....Book $31.99
The most comprehensive Rainbow biography to date and is based around multiple interviews the author has conducted with most of the key band members over many years including Ritchie Blackmore, as well as Roger Glover, Tony Carey, Graham Bonnet and Joe Lynn Turner, along with those who are sadly no longer with us, namely Cozy Powell, Ronnie James Dio, Jimmy Bain and Craig Gruber. From the raw and fiery Dio years, through the criminally under-rated Down to Earth album, the smooth crooning Joe Lynn Turner era and into one final somewhat forgotten record fronted by Doogie White, it's all examined here, track by track. 50% bigger than the 2005 original English Castle Magic, fully updated and revised, a whopping 318 pages including two swell colour photo sections. Canadian author Martin Popoff has written over seventy books on rock music and is one of the most respected authors within the genre. Paperback.

Albert Bouchard/Re Imaginos ....CD $16.99
For fans of Blue Oyster Cult, Blue Coupe, and Classic Rock! Albert Bouchard is best known as one of the founding members of Blue Oyster Cult. The original band sold millions of albums for Columbia Records with such classic songs as "Don't Fear the Reaper" and the #1 hit on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart "Burning for You." As a songwriter, he wrote many BOC songs including the very popular "Astronomy" which was covered by Metallica on their 1998's release Garage Inc and the live staple "Cities on Flame with Rock and Roll," which he also sang lead vocals. Today when not writing and recording in his home studio, he performs with several bands. His latest group, Blue Coupe, is a superstar combo which features his brother Joe Bouchard, also a founding member of BOC, and Dennis Dunaway, a founder of the Alice Cooper Group and a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Re Imaginos sees Albert revisiting the 1988 Blue Oyster Cult album Imaginos, which was originally intended as his solo album. The album weaves scripts and poems by the late Sandy Pearlman, a concept album about an alien conspiracy that is brought to fruition during the late 19th and early 20th century through the actions of Imaginos, an agent of evil.

Philip Glass/Dance Pieces ....CD $15.99
"Glasspieces" was originally performed in 1983, "In the Upper Room" suite premiered in 1986, and both accompanied a ballet performance. This is the only place you can find the ensemble version of the "Funeral" from 'Akhenaten,' which was a show-stopper from Glass's ensemble concerts of the mid '80s. There are a number of musicians on both pieces and "In the Upper Room" includes conductor Michael Riesman on piano and synthesizers. In addition to the keyboardist, there are a number of string, brass, and woodwind players. Although nearly all instrumental music, the additional voice (Dora Ohrenstein) on both pieces gives this works a very nice touch.
Blaine L. Reininger/Songs from the Rain Palace ....import CD $19.99
Blaine L. Reininger needs no special introduction. He is an American post-punk, new-wave and alternative pop singer, songwriter, musician, multi-instrumentalist (particularly violin), writer and performer. He is known for being a member of the group Tuxedomoon since 1977 after co-founding it with Steven Brown.
Sun Ra/Fireside Chat with Lucifer ....CD $15.99
Digitally remastered edition. An F-bomb saturated hip-hop call and response club cut... from Sun Ra?! While the most renown track in this omniversal opus is the atomic expletive-filled repartee Nuclear War, there is so much more to this dark mysterious journey through the mind of Sun Ra. The sprawling, suite-like 20-minute title track sustains a lyrical edge in spite of an open framework and textures, which encourage sonorities to surface and emerge from the band as if there was no human intention behind them. In opposition to 'Nuclear War,' Ra's organ playing here was built less on bombast and sonic terror than it is on whispers, stutters, shivers, and swells. Fireside Chat offers a wide stylistic array, as was the artist's intent, reflecting his eclectic, seemingly irreconcilable approach to compositional extremes. With Sun Ra you get everything... except predictability. First ever reissue of this iconic album!
Sun Ra Arkestra/Swirling ....CD $15.99
The planets align this October as the mighty Sun Ra Arkestra, under the direction of the maestro Marshall Allen, release their first studio album in over twenty years, 'Swirling.' Recorded at Rittenhouse Soundworks in Philadelphia, the new recording represents the continuation of a heartfelt rebirth of the Arkestra under Allen's guidance since Sun Ra left the planet in 1993, gaining new generations of followers from their regular touring across the globe. With a big band line-up featuring long-standing Arkestra members including Danny Ray Thompson (RIP), Michael Ray, Vincent Chancey, Knoel Scott, Cecil Brooks, Atakatune (RIP), Elson Nascimento and Tyler Mitchell, the album is a full-blooded celebration of Sun Ra's legacy.
Steve Roach/Tomorrow ....CD $15.99
Tomorrow's five deeply stirring transcendent electronic pieces draw from Steve's current high tide of creativity and introspection. Developed over the last six months within the stylistic mode he describes as "elegant futurism," cyclical melodic weavings flow and ebb in a graceful momentum infused with deep emotion. Tomorrow finds a rare balance between a feeling of floating and one of kinetic movement; this unexpected symmetry breathes life and energy into each piece. Primarily composed and performed spontaneously in the studio, there's an elemental quality - stately and masterful.
Jan-Peter Schwalm/Neuzeit ....CD $15.99
How we define the age we live in depends entirely on the frame we choose to view it through. On one timescale we're just getting settled into the 21st century; zoom out and we're deeply entrenched in the Anthropocene. We might be waking to the dawn of an enlightened, interconnected new era or teetering on the brink of a sixth mass extinction. Neuzeit, which German electro-acoustic composer J. Peter Schwalm views through his new duo outing with the Norwegian trumpeter Arve Henriksen, is generally taken to refer to the modern era that began in the 16th century and witnessed the rise of Western Civilization. Schwalm chooses to take the term on it's face, however; the fusion of "new" and "time" he defines as a period marked by sudden and drastic change. To borrow another word from the German, it ably yet dauntingly captures the zeitgeist of our tumultuous moment, one in which political upheaval, global pandemic and catastrophic climate change seem poised to usher in an uncertain new existence.
Mort Garson/Music from Patch Cord Productions ....CD $14.99
Archive release from the Canadian-born electronic music pioneer. Garson is best known for his albums in the 1960s and 1970s that were among the first to feature Moog synthesizers.
The Opening Performance Orchestra with Bill Laswell & Iggy Pop/The Acid Lands ....CD $17.99
The Acid Lands, created by the Prague-based Opening Performance Orchestra, was first heard in public in 2014 at the Movement-Sound-Space festival in Ostrava, to mark the centenary of William S. Burroughs' birth. The studio version of The Acid Lands was made in late 2019/early 2020 in collaboration with Bill Laswell and Iggy Pop, who undertook the role of the narrator. The piece, which pays tribute to William S. Burroughs, features fragments from the novels The Western Lands (1987) and Junkie (1953). In addition to the title composition, The Acid Lands, the record contains Bill Laswell's instrumental remix, as well as the collective piece "Naming Seven Souls," featuring samples of William S. Burroughs reading his own work.
Clive Wright/Breathe ....CD $15.99
Breathe was recorded between late March and June 2020. "Requiem for an Empire" and "Breathe" are reminiscent of Clive's work with Harold Budd from the Songs for Lost Blossoms album. The same distinctive Gibson Es 125 and ebo were used. There's a lot of familiarity in sound with those tracks from Blossoms where Clive was compared, or even mistaken for, Robert Fripp. "Freedom from Fear" features affirmations from the 1950s Mental-physics founder Ding Le Mei with Clive performing with an oud and percussion. "A Message of Gravity" is a remastered 432hz version of the original Spoke album release (2012). "Trio" was performed live with two plants and acoustic guitar. The final track Joshua Tree Voice is solely the voice of a Joshua Tree with added beats. We then have a continuation of live duets with the plant kingdom, often performed in the outdoors with indigenous plants.

Procol Harum/Something Magic ....import double CD $23.99
Esoteric Recordings is pleased to announce the release of a new re-mastered 2 CD edition of the classic album "Something Magic" by Procol Harum. First released in March 1977, the album introduced a new band line-up of Gary Booker (vocals, piano), B.J. Wilson (drums), Chris Copping (bass), Mick Grabham (guitar) and Pete Solley (organ, synthesizer) and was recorded in Miami with producers Ron and Howie Albert. Although the album would feature a host of marvellous tracks such as 'Strangers in Space,' 'Skating on Thin Ice' and 'Something Magic' and the Mick Grabham / Keith Reid composition 'The Mark of the Claw,' relationships between the band and their producers grew strained when the Albert brothers rejected a number of other tracks written for the new album. As a result, Gary Brooker suggested the inclusion of a lengthy piece he had been working on with lyricist Keith Reid; 'The Worm and the Tree.' This orchestrated piece would dominate a side of the album and was the first composition of this scale that Procol Harum had recorded since 'In Held Twas in I' (on the 1968 album "Shine on Brightly"). Following the album's release (and a final US tour with bassist Dee Murray replacing Chris Copping), Procol Harum disbanded, eventually reforming in 1991 with the release of the album "The Prodigal Stranger." At the time of its release Something Magic stood apart from the emerging punk rock movement and was unfairly overlooked by critics. However, the passage of time has revealed the excellence of the album. This new edition of Something Magic has been newly re-mastered and includes 14 bonus tracks comprising the rare B-side "Backgammon" and two live-in-the-studio recordings of 'You'd Better Wait' and 'This Old Dog,' originally written for the album. The set also includes an additional disc featuring Procol Harum's performance for the BBC TV and Radio series Sight & Sound in Concert from March 1977. This stereo BBC radio recording has been re-mastered from newly discovered masters and appears on CD for the first time. It includes the complete version of 'A Whiter Shade of Pale' which was cut in the original television broadcast of the set. The release also includes an illustrated booklet with essay and interviews by Procol Harum archivist Roland Clare.

Tangerine Dream/Sessions II ....import CD $20.99
In their imperial years of the 1970s, Tangerine Dream's live concerts were an electronic exploration, improvised and different every night, with little or no relationship to their smash hit albums, which were similarly esoteric. As the 1980s dawned, their recorded work contained more recognizable themes and they scored some of the biggest films of the decade (Risky Business, Firestarter, Near Dark, Thief, Sorcerer).
Galahad Electric Company/When the Battle Is Over ....import CD $19.99
Avalon Records is proud to present an unexpected 2020 album by Galahad off shoot project the Galahad Electric Company. During these strange Covid times in which we have found ourselves over the last few months it appears that Dean Baker and Stu Nicholson have tapped in to a rich vein of creativity resulting in a substantial collection of new music and songs. Therefore, the time seemed right to re-activate the Galahad Electric Company for the first time in over 20 years resulting in When the Battle Is Over. Most of the album was written between the middle of May and the end of June 2020 and is split in to two distinct sections, the first part being Suite 2020 a self-explanatory and somewhat ironic title which consists of five linked tracks. The second half of the album consist of five separate tracks, somewhat diverse in nature. Also, due to more constraints than normal as far as the recording process was concerned a certain amount of experimentation was involved with some of the songs, a few of which were ad-libbed and written in an almost stream of consciousness manner! The end result is an eclectic mixture of music and songs, examples of which are an adaptation of a poem by the famous 19th Century Dorset dialect poet and friend of Thomas Hardy, William Barnes and even Stu's cat Sammy Gorgeous contributes 'meows' to 'Mysterioso.' There are also nods to dance, folk, ambient, krautrock and even opera and gospel influences, all scattered throughout.

These idealized spaces became my inner world during this time." Features special guest artist, electronic musician Robert Rich who plays flutes on "Tale of the Egret."
Keith Jarrett/Budapest Concert ....2 CD Set $27.99

His later concerts are comprised of independent movements, each a marvel of spontaneous resourcefulness and creative energy.
Joni Mitchell/Archives Vol. 1: The Early Years (1963-1967) ....5 CD Set $62.99
Since her debut album arrived in 1968, Joni Mitchell's songs have been embraced across
generations, inspired multitudes of artists around the world, and earned every conceivable
accolade. She is now opening her vault for the first time to create the Joni Mitchell
Archives, a new series of boxed set releases that will span the next several years,
featuring deep dives in to unreleased content from different eras of her storied career.
Mitchell has been intimately involved in producing the archive series, lending her vision
and personal touch to every element of the project. The series debuts with Archives Vol.
1: The Early Years (1963-1967), which features nearly six hours of unreleased home, live,
and radio recordings that flow chronologically to paint a rich portrait of Mitchell's
rapid growth as a performer and songwriter during the period leading up to her debut
album. This treasure trove of unheard audio includes 29 original Mitchell compositions
that have never been released before with her vocals. The collection will be available as
a deluxe 5-CD set. The collection begins in 1963 with her earliest-known recording as a
19-year-old Mitchell performs at CFQC AM, a radio station in her hometown of Saskatoon,
Archives Vol. 1 reveals just how prolific a songwriter Mitchell was at the time. In addition to early versions of songs that would appear on Song to a Seagull ("Michael from Mountains" and "I Had a King"), the set also features songs destined for later albums: "Chelsea Morning" "Both Sides Now" (Clouds, 1969); "The Circle Game" (Ladies of the Canyon, 1970); and "Little Green" (Blue, 1971). More than a just historic document, these recordings crackle with energy thanks to a vibrant and enchanting Mitchell. On many, you can hear her tuning her guitar and telling a story about the song before playing it. That includes her rare 1967 cover of Neil Young's "Sugar Mountain," a song she says inspired her to write "The Circle Game." The 5-CD collection includes a 40-page booklet that features many unseen photos from Mitchell's personal collection as well as new liner notes featuring conversations between writer/filmmaker Cameron Crowe and Mitchell, who recently spent Sunday afternoons together discussing her archives. Crowe will continue to provide liners for future releases in the series. Looking back, Mitchell reflects on her early label of "folk singer": "The early stuff, I shouldn't be such a snob against it. A lot of these songs, I just lost them. They fell away. They only exist in these recordings. For so long I rebelled against the term, 'I was never a folk-singer.' I would get pissed off if they put that label on me. I didn't think it was a good description of what I was. And then I listened and it was beautiful. It made me forgive my beginnings. And I had this realization ... I was a folk singer!"

Suzzy Roche and her daughter Lucy Wainwright Roche shed some light on our troubled times on their third collaboration, I Can Still Hear You. Recorded from their New York City homes during the quarantine, this 11-track album showcases soul-searching, thought-provoking originals and perfectly chosen covers, along with guest appearances by Amy Ray and Emily Saliers of the Indigo Girls. The 11 tracks, 8 original and 3 covers, explore themes of good and evil, youth and mortality, the absurd and the serious, the real and the imagined, and the connection between what is present and what is gone. Each of their albums together have documented a specific time and this one, according to Suzzy, 'probably is the darkest, but at the same time, it's the most fanciful too. This time, there seemed an extra urgency about it.'
Various Artists/Kraut!: Die Innovativen Jahre Des Krautrock 1968-1979 Teil 3 ....import 2 CD Set $29.99
Progressive Rock from Germany! Never before has there been a comparable compilation!Towards the end of the 1960s, German bands began their first attempts to emancipate themselves stylistically from their US and British role models. Prog rock and psychedelia from our country were initially smiled at internationally and disparagingly called 'Krautrock' by cult DeeJay John Peel, among others. Unorthodox formations could not be pigeonholed, and so a scene with a wide musical range was created. This third part is dedicated to the south of Germany and presents popular bands such as Embryo, Kraan, Volker Kriegel, Guru Guru next to Action, Dzyan, Sahara, or Octopus and Orange Peel. Mostly remastered from digital tape copies by Marcus Heumann without wasting the original sound. Compiled and commented on 112(!) pages by Burghard Rausch (DeeJay, vinyl collector, drummer, radio presenter/author and book editor). PLEASE, NOTE: liner notes in German! With 'Kraut! Die innovativen Jahre des Krautrock 1968-1979' we will release a double CD every three months in 2020 with a booklet of about 100 pages and biographies of each band, an exquisite selection of the exciting and influential bands of those days, some of which caused a sensation far beyond Germany. The four editions are regionally structured. The third part deals with the South. All editions are compiled by Burghard Rausch and commented on in detail. The publisher of several books on 'Rock in Germany,' radio author and presenter, drummer (Agitation Free, among others), vinyl collector and DeeJay with enormous expertise has already been in charge of the NDW series for Bear Family. We are convinced that 'Kraut!' will be the most comprehensive CD documentation of this era, which has shaped the history of rock music in Germany, licensed by various rights holders!

Hawkwind Light Orchestra/Carnivorous ....import CD $19.99
Cherry Red are delighted to announce a brand-new studio album by Hawkwind Light Orchestra. Carnivorous (an anagram of Coronavirus), which follows Hawkwind's critically acclaimed 2019 album All Aboard the Skylark and effortlessly resumes the space rock voyage embarked upon by the full band. The album was recorded entirely in lockdown during the coronavirus pandemic, having started life as a solo project by Dave Brock during the winter of 2019, with contributions added by the band in January and February, before the lockdown began. Musically the stalwart trio of Dave Brock (vocals, lead guitar, keyboards and synths), Richard Chadwick (drums) and Magnus Martin (guitar, vocal and keyboards) have created a tight, futuristic but classic sounding record that emphasises Dave's exemplary song writing. Carnivorous is an album that by design had to be recorded without a full complement of Hawkwind members in their usual style. However, it is a testament to the contributing members' proficiency to end up with an album that bears all the hallmarks of classic Hawkwind while recorded under such testing circumstances. Hawkwind's 50th anniversary celebrations were due to continue throughout 2020. The band are monitoring the situation and will proceed with live shows as soon as possible.

The Residents/Cube-E Box - The History of American Music in 3 E-Z Pieces [pREServed Edition] ....import 7 CD Box Set $45.99
In the late 1980s The Residents embarked on what many fans still consider their greatest live project. "Cube-E - The History of American Music in 3 E-Z Pieces" spanned almost four years and proposed to do nothing less than its title suggested, telling the story of American popular music, from its birth around the campfires of a non-existent Old West to its death at the hands of Elvis and the British Invasion, all in three easy pieces. Performed on TV and on stage around the world between 1987 and 1990, the show saw The Residents fully embrace their loves of elaborate and imaginative staging, the latest in music technology and, of course, The King - Elvis Aaron Presley. It goes without saying that there was barely a dry seat in the house, and alongside live recordings and contemporaneous studio material this pREServed set includes the previously unreleased demos for the entire "King & Eye" album, which saw the group tackle twenty-something (you can count 'em!) of Mr. Swivel Hips' hottest hits. Spread across an inescapably unwieldy 7CDs at the group's insistence, "Cube-E pREServed" is the final word in Americana cool. Or so it says here! Remastered, expanded, and pREServed for future generations, this is the latest in a series of archival Residents reissues that will continue throughout 2020 and beyond. Look out for "Freak Show" and "Gingerbread Man" sets, coming to a record store near you!

Anthony Pirog/Pocket Poem ....CD $16.99
From Cuneiform Records, Anthony Pirog - guitar and electronics, Michael Formanek - acoustic and electric bass, Ches Smith - drums, percussion and electronics. While it might confound those fixated with an artist's niche in the marketplace, guitarist Anthony Pirog knows little of stylistic limitations - in point of fact, Pirog's latest opus brings to mind the beloved Duke Ellington adage: Beyond category. Initially based in jazz, Pirog's seeming objective is to be a "category" unto himself, embracing not only jazz but avant-garde and indie rock, noise, and ambient soundscapes. Pocket Poem, his second under his own name and his first since joining forces with 50% of DC's legendary Fugazi as Messthetics (with two releases on Dischord), is in a zone where stylistic "handles" matter little but the idea of music is vibrant, expansive, and kaleidoscopic. "Anthony Pirog's work is otherworldly - feverish in it's delivery and interstellar in it's complexity - but his feet have long been planted on the ground in Washington DC... But what's the most DC thing a DC musician can do? Well, they could start a band with members of Fugazi. That would do it... " - Guitar. Com "So this is what all the fuss is about... [regarding] Anthony Pirog's status as a Washington, D. C. area guitar god... and for all his technical prowess, Pirog possesses a skilled composer's knack for memorable themes and melodies."

Rhinoceros/The Elektra Albums 1968-1970 [Remastered Edition] ....import 3 CD Set $29.99
Esoteric Recordings is pleased to announce the release of a newly re-mastered 3 CD set featuring all the albums recorded by Rhinoceros for Elektra Records between 1968 and 1970. The concept of Rhinoceros was a suggestion of celebrated producer Paul A. Rothchild (The Doors, Love, Butterfield Blues Band etc.). Because of his recent success with The Doors, Rothchild was given the freedom by Elektra founder Jac Holzman to suggest projects he felt had merit. With fellow producer Frazier Mohawk (who had been involved with Buffalo Springfield), he decided to assemble a new band from scratch, selecting some of the finest musicians in the Los Angeles area. Following a series of auditions, Rhinoceros came together to rehearse and record their debut album with a line-up of vocalist John Finley (ex-Jon & Lee & the Checkmates), guitarist Danny Weis (a founder member of Iron Butterfly), keyboard player Michael Fonfara (ex-Electric Flag), guitarist Danny Hastings (briefly involved with Buffalo Springfield), keyboard player & vocalist Alan Gerber, bassist Jerry Penrod and drummer Billy Mundi (once with The Mothers of Invention). Despite the manner in which they came together, Rhinoceros proved to be a fine band, absorbing rock, blues and soul influences and their self-titled debut album (produced by Paul Rothchild) appeared in 1968 to good reviews. The band began to tour the USA and attracted a steady growing following. In 1969 the band recorded the album Satin Chickens, another fine example of groove-based rock with psychedelic and soul influences. By this time Jerry Penrod had departed nto be replaced by Peter Hodgson. The album gained enough traction for the band to be asked to perform at the legendary Woodstock Festival in August 1969, only for their management to reject the offer to appear without the band's knowledge. When the impact of this decision was realized morale with the band suffered and they underwent further line-up changes for their third and final album Better Times Are Coming (issued in 1970). This re-mastered 3 CD set gathers together for the first time the three albums Rhinoceros recorded for Elektra Records and features an illustrated booklet with exclusive new interviews with John Finley and Danny Weis and serves as a fine tribute to an unfairly overlooked band, who were a part of the American rock scene of the late 1960s.
Culpeper's Orchard/Mountain Music - The Polydor Recordings 1970-1973 [Remastered & Expanded Edition] ....import 2 CD Set $23.99
Esoteric Recordings is pleased to announce the release of a new re-mastered 2 CD set by legendary cult Danish progressive rock band Culpeper's Orchard, "Mountain Music - The Polydor Recordings 1971 - 1973." The band formed in Copenhagen in 1970 with an original line-up of Cy Nicklin (vocals, guitar), Niels Henriksen (lead guitar, piano), Michael Friis (bass, organ, flute) and Rodger Barker (drums, percussion). Englishman Nicklin had been living in Denmark since 1963 and had also recorded with Sandy Denny and the Strawbs whilst that act had been based in Copenhagen. In 1968 he had been a founder member of another legendary Danish band, Day of Phoenix, but had departed to form his own band with Danes Henriksen and Friis and English drummer Rodger Barker. Culpeper's Orchard signed to Polydor Records in Denmark and issued their self-titled debut album in March 1971. The album was a fine example of psychedelic, progressive rock, drawing on a myriad of diverse influences from rock, folk and the US West Coast bands of the time. The album gained a release throughout much of Europe and has subsequently earned it's place as a legendary psychedelic progressive album with original vinyl copies changing hands for three figure sums. Following this successful debut, the band recorded the album "Second Sight" in 1972, with drummer Ken Gudman (formerly with The Savage Rose) replacing Rodger Barker. The album was an equally fine work and took in more US West Coast acoustic influences as well as retaining a rock edge. Culpeper's Orchard performed regularly in Scandinavia on bills with many major artists, but the band's line-up would change once more by the time of their third and final album for Polydor, "Going for a Song," recorded in the autumn of 1972. Neils Henricksen departed and was replaced by Neils Vangkilde on guitar. Nils Tuxen was also recruited on pedal steel guitar and British drummer Tom McEwan replaced Ken Gudman. The album took in more influences from artists such as Crosby, Stills and Nash and earned critical praise but wasn't the wider breakthrough the band had hoped for. It would be the band's final album for Polydor records. A hiatus followed live performances the following year (which included an appearance at the Ragnarock Festival in Norway alongside acts such as the Pretty Things and Mungo Jerry). The band would record a final album in a different stylistic vein three years later, but their albums for Polydor, and in particular their debut, are those for which Culpeper's Orchard are most fondly remembered. This collection has been newly remastered and includes the band's three albums issued by Polydor along with four rare bonus tracks including two recorded at the 1973 Ragnarock festival. "Mountain Music - The Polydor Recordings" features an illustrated booklet with a new essay and exclusive new interviews with Cy Nicklin, Michael Friis, Tom McEwan and Neils Vangkilde.
Various Artists/Living on the Hill - A Danish Underground Trip 1967-1974 ....import 3 CD Set $35.99
Esoteric Recordings is pleased to announce the release of "Living on the Hill - A Danish Underground Trip 1967 -1974," a 3CD clamshell boxed set celebrating the so-called "underground" rock music scene that emerged from Denmark at the tail end of the 1960s. It was an era that saw huge changes, both musical and social and was a pivotal period for creativity in rock music throughout Europe. The influence of ground-breaking artists from Britain and the USA such as The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, Traffic, Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, Jefferson Airplane et al spread far and wide. In Denmark, as in many other European countries, the cries of change were made by students, radicals and hippies to a backdrop of emerging "underground" bands who were fusing the musical influences of psychedelia, jazz, blues, folk. From this upheaval came a succession of highly imaginative Danish groups who recorded a wonderful series of highly imaginative and creative albums. From the psychedelic jamming of Alrune Rod and Young Flowers to the harder edged music of The Old Man & the Sea, Hurdy Gurdy and Delta Blues Band to the progressive and jazz influenced bands such as Burnin' Red Ivanhoe, Blast Furnace, Culpeper's Orchard, Midnight Sun, Pan, Secret Oyster and Thor's Hammer, the diversity and range of the bands heralding from a small country was impressive in its excellence. Some acts such as The Savage Rose, Burnin' Red Ivanhoe, Ache, Midnigh tSun, Secret Oyster, Culpeper's Orchard and Day of Phoenix enjoyed some degree of success outside their native land whilst others remained destined to have a Scandinavian following. The common thread among all of these artists was an emphasis on experimentation and a desire to push the perceived musical boundaries. Over the ensuing years the music of these acts has attracted the attention of record collectors of the psychedelic and progressive eras with original albums changing hands for huge sums. Whilst the underground rock scenes in Germany have been celebrated for some years, the story of these Danish bands has been largely untold, although the early Dansk Rock had its champion in the UK with DJ John Peel and latterly, figures such as Julian Cope have celebrated much of this music. Living on the Hill is the music of the Danish counterculture and serves as a fine celebration of a creative period when rock music was evolving into a means of social change throughout Europe. Take your ears on a Danish Underground Trip.

Roger Waters/Us + Them ....2 CD Set $17.99
Roger Waters/Us + Them ....Blu-Ray $26.99
Roger Waters/Us + Them ....DVD $19.99
October release. Roger Waters: Us + Them, chronicles the acclaimed 2017-2018 tour of the iconic Pink Floyd artist. As the founding member, lyricist, composer and creative force behind Pink Floyd, Us + Them presents Waters powerful music in stunning form and highlights its message of human rights, liberty and love. Based around his acclaimed, sold-out Us + Them worldwide tour of 2017-18, comprising a total of 156 shows to 2.3 million people across the globe, it features classic songs from The Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall, Animals, Wish You Were Here as well as his most recent album, Is this the Life We Really Want? Waters powerfully demonstrates that he is at heart, a musical activist and one of the most passionate political commentators of his time. He has dedicated his life to fighting against those who seek to control our lives and destroy our planet. Welcome to the Machine and Another Brick in the Wall Part II, are a stark reminder of the bleak warnings that he gave decades ago about alienation, displacement, greed, suffering, destruction and loss. And yet the humanity of the songwriter cannot be more plainly seen than in Wish You Were Here, because, although he presents a grim picture of the state of the world, ultimately his message is one of hope through unity and love. Directed by Sean Evans and Roger Waters, the film provides a visceral sense of what it was like to be there. Using the most innovative digital and audio technology available, this state-of-the-art show encapsulates a series of breath-taking visual, audio and sensory experiences. It captures Waters' legendary live performances and takes the audience on an emotionally charged, thought-provoking journey.

Ray Thomas/Words & Music [Newly Remastered Compilation] ....import CD + DVD Set $24.99
Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce the release of a new CD + DVD collection of recordings celebrating the musical life and work of Ray Thomas. Ray was a founder member of The Moody Blues, a band whose legacy and classic albums need no introduction. He was a musical pioneer, introducing the flute into the context of a rock band before such luminaries as Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull. Ray's contribution to the Moody Blues was immense, and when the band went on a hiatus in the mid '70s, Ray recorded two solo albums for the band's Threshold label: "From Mighty Oaks" and "Hopes, Wishes & Dreams." When the Moody Blues regrouped to record the album "Octave," Ray was once again within their ranks and would appear with the band on record and on stage until he retired in 2002. The release of a limited edition boxed set of his solo work by Esoteric Recordings in 2010 saw Ray return to the studio to record the song "The Trouble with Memories" (co-written with keyboard player and arranger Bias Boshell). Sadly, Ray passed away in January 2018 leaving behind a wonderful legacy of work, including his very last song (co-written and recorded with the Welsh musician Ryland Teifi): 'Dada's Song,' a piece which lyrically paid homage to Ray's Welsh ancestry. This compilation gathers together a collection of songs from the first line-up of the Moody Blues, Ray's solo album and includes the first ever release of 'Dada's Song.' It also includes a bonus DVD (NTSC / Region Free) which features the 5.1 surround sound mix of Ray's 1975 album "From Mighty Oaks" (originally featured on the limited edition 2010 boxed set, unavailable for some years and included here due to much demand from fans), the 1975 promotional video of 'High Above My Head' and the new video for 'Dada's Song' exclusively shot for this release. The booklet features many tributes from those who worked with him, including former band mates Denny Laine and Mike Pinder.

Steve Miller Blues Band/Live from the Fillmore West 1968 ....import CD $15.99
The multi-talented and now venerable rock and roll Elder Statesman Steve Miller has steered an engrossing path through rock music, in a career that goes right back to his pre-teens in the 1950s to the present day. His career has been earmarked by moments where he has struck commercial high water marks with international hit singles such as 'The Joker,' 'Rock 'n' Me,' 'Take the Money and Run,' and 'Abracadabra,' but he has also released music that has excited positive critical appraisal - albums such as his 1968, London-recorded Children of the Future, through albums such as the second effort, Sailor, both examples of where he blended his blues-rock roots with elements of psychedelia. His third album, Brave New World, featured one of his first songs which created a character that defined him at that point - 'Space Cowboy,' a sobriquet he would later make reference to in his hit single, The Joker. However, he also moved with the times, and although primarily a cultured lead guitarist, his music has, at various times, incorporated the extended use of synthesisers, as well as taken advantage of studio and production innovations, rarely to the detriment of his overall likeable qualities. At heart, though, the blues has always been at the core of his music. This gritty live recording takes us back to the San Francisco of late 1968, when the bloom of the Summer of Love had long since wilted, but the restless churn and change of contemporary rock and roll was in full effect.

Dyble Longdon/Between a Breath and a Breath ....import CD $22.99
Dyble Longdon is a collaboration between iconic vocalist Judy Dyble (ex Fairport Convention, Trader Horne) and Big Big Train songwriter and frontman David Longdon. The album contains seven original compositions with all lyrics by Judy Dyble and music and production by David Longdon. The songs are, at times, haunting and, at others, beautifully fragile. This collaboration with David Longdon is something Judy Dyble has hoped for for some time. "I first heard David sing with Big Big Train at King's Place in London 2015 and immediately decided that I really wanted to sing with him someday. And here we are with a collaborative album, which I think is wonderful!" she said. David Longdon describes the experience, "Judy and I both knew that it was a good possibility that our album might be her last. She told me that she had been diagnosed with lung cancer at the conclusion of Big Big Train's UK Tour 2019. It had become a race against time to complete the album, so one week after the tour I began working at The Playpen recording studio in Bristol with Patrick Phillips and Sarah Ewing, making Between a Breath and A Breath. Thankfully we had recorded all of Judy's vocals for the album some months earlier at Real World studios in Box. Despite the realization that Judy's health was gradually deteriorating, we decided that we would make the record that we'd always intended to make. The words to these song were given a greater and more profound meaning in light of what she was going through. We both managed to sign off the artwork and the final mastered mixes together. Although she was accepting of her circumstances, she really wanted to read the reviews and see it's reception in the world. She said she was sorry that she had to leave me, to represent our album alone. I said that it would be my honour to bring our music into the world. Judy passed away on the 12th of July 2020. I miss her greatly." Fellow founder member Simon Nicol said, "Judy was ever a childhood friend to me first and foremost, and now cancer has taken her after a long fight. But she'll remain as I always saw her: kind and gentle, shy but hilarious, wistful but focussed. She surrounded herself with loveliness, loved her kids and grandchildren, and adored her rescued greyhounds. Farewell, lovely."

Samurai/Samurai [Newly Remastered & Expanded Edition] ....import CD $18.99
Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce the release of a newly re-mastered and expanded edition of the classic and highly regarded self-titled album by the progressive rock group Samurai. The band evolved from the equally excellent group Web (whose album I Spider is a classic of the genre), and featured Dave Lawson (vocals, keyboards), Tony Edwards (guitar), John Eaton (bass), Kenny Beveridge (drums), Lennie Wright (vibes, drums, percussion), Tony Roberts (saxes, flute, clarinet) and Don Fay (saxes, flute). The sole album by the band is truly a lost classic of the progressive era. Released on the short-lived Greenwich Gramophone label in 1971, the album was influenced by the experiments of groups such as King Crimson, Colosseum et al, but Samurai was more than a mere clone of other bands. The group successfully fused the worlds of jazz with rock, the musicianship on the album was excellent and Dave Lawson's compositions were ground-breaking and memorable. Sadly, the group disbanded shortly after the release of the record resulting in limited sales. However, the influence of the album was not lost as Dave Lawson soon joined Dave Greenslade to form the group Greenslade, effectively taking up the musical mantle laid down by Samurai. This Esoteric new edition has been newly re-mastered from recently discovered first generation original master tapes and has been expanded to include three live recordings made in 1971 and officially released for the first time. The release also features an illustrated booklet and an interview with Dave Lawson.
Day of Phoenix/Mind Funeral: Recordings 1968-1972 [Remastered & Expanded] ....import 2 CD Set $22.99
Esoteric Recordings is pleased to announce the release of a new re-mastered 2 CD set by legendary cult Danish progressive rock band Day of Phoenix, "Mind Funeral - The Recordings 1968 - 1972." The band first came together in Copenhagen in 1968 with an original line-up of Cy Nicklin (vocals, guitar), Ole Prehn (guitar & vocals), Karsten Lyng (guitar), Jess Staehr (bass) and Henrik Friis (drums) and recorded one single (a cover version of The Strawbs' 'Tell Me') before fracturing. Cy Nicklin departed and would resurface in the ranks of another fine Danish progressive band, Culpeper's Orchard and by the time the band came to record their first album Jess Staehr had also departed to join Burnin' Red Ivanhoe. He was replaced by Erik Stedt, whilst vocalist Hans Lauridsen also joined the group. The band's debut album, Wide Open N-Way, was recorded in June 1970 in Copenhagen and was produced by former Colosseum bass player Tony Reeves. The album gained a wider release when issued in the UK early in 1971 on the newly established Greenwich Gramophone label (part of the Chapter 1 Records imprint) with a revised running order. The band's blend of progressive and psychedelic US west coast rock influences came to the fore on the album's title track and the lengthy "Mind Funeral" and gained them a wider audience throughout Europe. The album was followed by the release of a European single ('Deep within the Storm' b/w 'Chicken Skin') before Erik Stedt died of a drug overdose in 1971. In 1972 Day of Phoenix entered the studio once more with Tony Reeves as producer to record their second album The Neighbour's Son with Jess Staehr making an appearance. The album appeared on the Chapter 1 label and featured shorter songs, but was another fine work. Despite the excellence of the band, their commercial fortunes failed to improve and sadly Day of Phoenix disbanded soon after. In the coming years their albums would become highly sought after by aficionados of progressive and psychedelic rock. This collection has been newly remastered from the original Chapter 1 Records master tapes and includes four bonus tracks taken from the band's two singles, with 'Deep within the Storm' and 'Chicken Skin' appearing on CD for the first time. "Mind Funeral" is a fine tribute to a unique band.
Linda Hoyle/Pieces of Me + The Fetch [Remastered & Expanded Edition] ....import 2 CD Set $22.99
Esoteric Recordings is pleased to announce the release of a new re-mastered 2 CD set featuring two classic albums by legendary vocalist Linda Hoyle: "Pieces of Me" and "The Fetch." Linda Hoyle first came to attention as vocalist with the excellent, but short-lived jazz rock band Affinity in 1970, after recording an album for Vertigo records, Linda then embarked on recording her first solo album, "Pieces of Me," for Vertigo in 1971. Collaborating with celebrated musician Karl Jenkins (of Nucleus and later Soft Machine) Linda Hoyle produced a wonderful and innovative album which fused many influences and was ground-breaking in it's direction. "Pieces of Me" also featured contributions from guitarist Chris Spedding and fellow Nucleus members John Marshall (drums) and Jeff Clyne (bass). Despite being a work of such quality and critical acclaim, "Pieces of Me" failed to make a commercial impression and Linda emigrated to Canada in 1972 where she continued to sing and also practiced as an art therapist. In 2013 she began work on another solo album, working with musician Oliver Whitehead and her former colleague in Affinity, Mo Foster. The album "The Fetch" appeared in 2015 and was also greeted with acclaim. This two disc set is a fitting celebration of the work of one of Britain's most gifted female vocalists and gathers together both of Linda Hoyle's solo albums and includes a bonus track previously unreleased in Europe,'Who's There,' recorded during sessions for "The Fetch." The set features a booklet with liner notes by Linda Hoyle.
Apple/An Apple a Day [Expanded Edition] ....import CD $18.99
They made one of the rarest albums of the psychedelic era (a copy recently sold on eBay for just under £4,000), while their two singles included one of the genre's most enduring surrender-to-the-void creations in the much-compiled 'The Otherside.' Nevertheless, so little information has ever surfaced about Apple that UK underground rock guide book Galactic Ramble described them as "probably the only legendary UK psych band still shrouded in mystery." Finally, however, we have some kind of closure with this first-ever band-approved reissue of "An Apple a Day," which also includes mono mixes of their aforementioned brace of single releases. More than half-a-century after they split, band leader Jeff Harrad spills the beans for the first time on their murky genesis in Cardiff, from their pre-Apple days on the local beat/R&B scene to the band's brief relocation to London and brushes with guitarist Caleb 'Baby Your Phrasing Is Bad' Quaye and Kinks/Troggs manager Larry Page, who signed them to his Page One label. Apart from the singles, "An Apple a Day" featured such psych-pop gems as 'Queen of Hearts Blues,' 'Mr. Jones' and 'Photograph,' whose combination of brass/orchestral arrangements and Alice in Wonderland-style lyrical surrealism conjured up images of Syd Barrett fronting The Kinks. With a new essay on the band that includes numerous quotes from Harrad, rare band photos and re-mastered sound quality, this new digipak edition of "An Apple a Day" is the definitive release of a classic, much-loved late Sixties UK psychedelic pop period piece.
Various Artists/Looking through a Glass Onion: Beatles Psychedelic Songbook 1966-1972 ....import 3 CD Set $28.99
A 3-CD set, "Looking through a Glass Onion" assembles these disparate strands into one cohesive package, with the studio day trippers, the cultural pranksters, the genre-benders, the folk club stalwarts and the hair-down-to-his-knees prog-rock brigade all grooving up slowly to the starting line. Though largely forgotten now, Liverpool quartet The Beatles were the toppermost of the poppermost in the Sixties, responsible for some of the biggest-selling singles of all time and a series of ground-breaking albums that dictated musical trends until their next LP emerged. With those albums containing numerous potential hit singles, it was inevitable that producers and groups would wait impatiently for the latest Beatles LP to land in order to rush into the studio and clone a track with the aim of scoring a cheap hit single. That process continued unabated for the rest of the band's career, but the results became more interesting with the arrival of the psychedelic and progressive era, when rock started to take itself more seriously and a more self-respecting, artistic approach was called for. Suddenly the cheap imitations were joined by more adventurous interpretations of Beatles material, including some startling re-imaginings of songs that dated back to the salad days of the Lennon/McCartney writing partnership, with early efforts like 'Every Little Thing' and 'You Can't Do That' given radical treatments to reflect the changing musical times. The result is the proverbial Magical Mystery Tour, a Fab Four parallel universe, a Looking-Glass world in which 'Strawberry Fields Forever' can be an Elizabethan garden party madrigal or a churning slice of Fudged-up sludge, where a spaced-out Duffy Power takes the lyrics of 'Fixing a Hole' perhaps a little too literally, 'Penny Lane' becomes avant-garde easy listening, the likes of Nick Lowe, Alex Harvey and Ritchie Blackmore try out early identities, and the Walrus was Lol. Containing nearly four hours of music and a 40-page booklet, "Looking through a Glass Onion" features 68 tracks from various UK acts, with tons of memorabilia and rare photos as well as the usual verbose smartarse annotation shamelessly passed off as informed musical commentary. A splendid time is guaranteed for all. Well, almost all.
Philip Glass/Songs ....import 2 CD Set $20.99
There aren't many semi-classical albums that can be played at full volume on a road trip. "Liquid Days" is one. Songs written by Paul Simon, Suzanne Vega, David Byrne and Laurie Andersen with the pulsing, emotive orchestrations of Philip Glass. The vocalists are an equally eclectic mixture, with perhaps Linda Ronstadt and The Roches the most unexpected performers. The three operas comprising Glass' 'Trilogy' are something special. The selections themselves, the pacing of the sequencing, and absolutely top-drawer performances make this a standout album. Glass' best work may be found in his opera scores; 'Einstein on the Beach,' 'Satyagraha,' and ' Akhnaten.' This album presents the cream of the cream.

Einsturzende Neubauten/Alles in Allem ....CD + DVD $19.99
2020 release. After more than 12 years, Einsturzende Neubauten's long-awaited studio album Alles in Allem is finally released. The album marks the quintessence of the band's output, opening yet another unexpected door in 40 years of ongoing sound research by a very experimental group of musicians around Blixa Bargeld. This band, like nearly no other, has managed to create a musical cosmos. It has, in fact, built up it's own genre by uniquely combining edgy sound with sophisticated poetry. Appropriately, in the Year of the Rat - the symbol of ingenuity and versatility according to the Chinese zodiac - the band is not resting on the laurels of its last four decades. Instead, it curiously continues to explore everything that the sound universe has to yield, with one eye on the future and with boundless playfulness. The unique sound and textual landscapes of the band, founded in 1980 in Berlin, reveal the timelessness that Blixa Bargeld, N. U. Unruh, Alexander Hacke, Jochen Arbeit and Rudolph Moser have continuously maintained. And yet, through experimental approaches to songwriting, instruments developed over four decades and collective input, the band sounds remarkably cutting edge within it's own time. Includes a DVD of exclusive live recordings filmed on November 3, 2004, during a special supporter gig at East Berlin's Palast der Republik. DVD is NTSC all-region format.
Mina Tindle/Sister ....CD $13.99
The third full-length from Mina Tindle, Sister is an album populated by mythic creatures of all kinds: lions on parade, lovers turned to cannibals, kings and Sirens and women with wings. Like any great fabulist, she threads her storytelling with a fragile wisdom, revealing essential truths about all the danger and wildness within the human heart. With each moment elevated by her spellbinding vocal work - a gift she's shown in recording and touring as a singer for The National - Sister ultimately makes for a transportive listen, at turns impossibly dreamlike and profoundly illuminating. Mina Tindle is the project of Parisian singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Pauline de Lassus. Mostly made in New York City the album's elegant detail balances the odd magic of the songs with a fierce emotional realism. During the last few years as she was writing and recording Sister, de Lassus has also been an integral part of the PEOPLE Festivals at the historic Berlin Funkhaus in 2016 and 2018, where she worked with a vast range of musicians and artists in the community. Sister achieves a potent complexity, arriving as her most imaginative selection of songs to date while wholly embracing the sometimes painful truth-telling she's long treasured in her most beloved artists.
