The slimmed-down 2004 edition of Guess Who guitarist Randy Bachman shows that he also has a jazz side to his musical personality, which he said is directly related to his first musical hero and mentor, guitarist Lenny Breaux. "Jazz has changed," he said." I was listening to a new jazz station while on vacation in San Diego. It had the usual Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis classical stuff, but there was some new, keyboardy type things, and I thought, 'hey, I can do this.' So, I hired a jazz trio, stand-up bass and drums, went in the studio, and four of the songs locked into such a groove, that is so undeniably cool. I got brave enough to do it, and I'm even braver now. Pardon the expression, but it really rocks. I think there's a niche for it out there." He dared even more to lens these performances (presented on this DVD) from Toronto in May 2004. They are more acoustic than in your face and focus on both Bachman the singer as well as Bachman the guitarist.

The second part of this historic video shows Pink Floyd after having signed their first recording contract with EMI records outside Abbey Road studios in April '67. Again Syd is trippin'. The mid-'60s formation heard and seen on this previously unissued Italian performance also features an all star lineup, with Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, long-time Messenger Wayne Shorter, trombonist Curtis Fuller, pianist Cedar Walton and bassist Reggie Workman. On drums, of course, we have the leader, the inimitable Art Blakey acting as a true engine throughout the performance. With the exception of Workman, the rest of the group had been playing together since mid-1961 (Jymie Merritt was the bassist until mid-1962). Thus, by the time of this concert they were already a well-rehearsed unit. The program includes four well known standards plus a Wayne Shorter composition ("Children of the Night") and a Cedar Walton tune ("Mosaic"), both of which had first been recorded in the studio for the album Mosaic on October 2, 1961. This Eric Dolphy release (like its companion volume IJ 511) marks an essential addition to the incomparable reedman’s discography, as it contains two of the rare occasions in which Dolphy was captured on film. Both of these clips feature Dolphy performing with the Charles Mingus Sextet. The first shows Dolphy in a rehearsal with the band (filmed the day after the Oslo concert presented on IJ 511), which explains the inclusion of two different takes of Mingus’ “So Long Eric”. For the rehearsal’s second tune, the band begins playing Mingus’ composition, “Meditations”. A brief false start, however, leads to a short conversation Between Mingus and Dolphy. The bassist can be heard here asking Dolphy what he is planning to do after the tour. Sadly, Eric Dolphy died in Berlin from undiagnosed diabetes on June 29 of that same year, nine days after his 36th birthday. Following their brief chat, the group performs a nearly 20-minute extended version of “Meditations”.

Europe was always receptive to the genius of American jazzmen, many of whom returned the favor by making the Old Continent their permanent home or living there for extended periods of their lives. Such was the case of both Dexter Gordon, who lived in Europe from 1962 to 1976, and of Ben Webster, who resided there from 1964 until his death in 1973. Both musicians were recorded prolifically during those years, and these filmed performances are perfect examples of the love and admiration they received. Gordon is featured in a quartet format backed by the great Kenny Drew on piano, the late Danish bassist NHOP and the relatively obscure South African drummer Makaya Ntshoko (Ben Webster is present and can be seen among the audience!!). Webster’s performance is also with a quartet, with the exception of “A Night in Tunisia”, in which English tenor saxophonist and famous jazz club owner Ronnie Scott joins the group.

In both settings the group looks relaxed, playing a combination of jazz standards and Wes's compositions. The music is typical of Wes; easy to listen to, elegant and sophisticated. As he explained during an interview, when asked about the avant-garde: "I really refuse to participate in something that I don't know what part I'm supposed to be playing. I don't think I quite understand it. If they say we're gonna play and you just come in, well, they've got to tell me what to come in with! If a person likes abstract things he won't know how to explain it so he won't be able to tell me, so where do you go... Me, I play the conventional way because I feel like I have to." These performances confirm the great skill, dedication and exquisite sensibility Wes Montgomery displayed in his art throughout his career.
