REICH; DARMON; MALLET - STEVE REICH: PHASE TO FACE     $25.98
A student of Darius Milhaud and Luciano Berio, Reich quickly developed a style all his own inspired by Baroque music, Bartok, Webern, and Stravinsky, as well as jazz, traditional music (especially African), and Hebrew cantilation. As a trailblazing exponent of minimalist music, Reich rejected the characteristic complexity of mid-20th-century classical harmony and tonality in order to make large-scale works from minimal materials - a single chord, a brief musical motif, a spoken exclamation. In this profile he looks back on the key stages of his 40-year career, from the formation of his own group to the American avant-garde he helped create, from new video performances to his quasi-religious music. Despite his success and wide recognition, Reich has never renounced his independent spirit. Included are clips from performances and concerts in Le Havre, Tokyo, Rome, New York, and Manchester.

Ed Sullivan Presents: Rock N Roll Revolution $14.98
In the 60s, a new sound came across the Atlantic from England, a musical invasion unlike anything America had ever experienced. In February 1964, The Beatles landed on Ed Sullivan’s stage and our world changed forever. The so-called British Invasion took American by storm and bands such as The Rolling Stones, The Hollies, and The Animals were crawling all over the record charts. They were cutting edge and far different from what we’d come to expect from rock n roll in the states. They had long hair, dressed in narrow lapel suits and looked scruffy, but they had a unique charm. Their beat - a newly reinvigorated brand of rock n roll was coming back to America and kids couldn’t get enough of it. How did America respond? We met the British head on with groups like The Beach Boys, The Mamas and The Papas, and groundbreaking artists like Bob Dylan and James Brown, all of whom appear in this program. Timeless live performances coupled with insightful interviews from the musicians themselves tell the story of the music that changed our lives.
