Amon Duul have had a long and varied career dating back to 1967. With three productive eras the band originally forming in Munich have come to release albums that to date are rated as some of the best of the krautrock genre. These four recordings date back to 1981. Featuring guitarist John Weinziel and bassist Dave Anderson with drummer Guy Evans and a host of featured musicians (including Ed Wynne/Ozric Tentacles), these highly recarded recordings contain strong psychedelic and progressive flourishes that found further expansion of their original fan base.

Recorded at Wembely Arena in 1973 this album finds Hawkwind at their peak. Featuring the classic line up of Robert Clavert, Lemmy Kilmister, Kik Mike, Nik Turner and Dave Brock, the recording features unique versions of fan favorites "Orgone Accumulator," "Sonic Attack," "Master of the Universe," "Welcome to the Future," with rare live renditions of "Urban Guerilla" and "Silver Machine." The album further includes two previously unavailable poetry readings by Robert Calvert.

This double CD was recorded at Brixton Sundwon December 1972. From the opening static of "Sapce" to the alien foreboding of "Welcome to the Future" through poems, riffs and electronic mayhem, Space Ritual was alternately terrifying, invigorating and utterly believable. This album by rock group PM was originally released in 1980 in Europe only. The band was formed by drummer Carl Palmer soon after Emerson, Lake & Palmer stopped working together in 1979. For his first post-ELP project, Palmer recuited vocalist Todd Cochran (from the band Automatic Man) and blues guitarist extraordinaire John Nitzinger. Although the group was short-lived (because Palmer went on to form the multi-platinum supergroup, Asia), in its brief time together PM made very energetic and powerful rock'n'roll. This record has long been a collector's item.

Formed by original Buzzcocks lead singer Howard Devoto, Magazine featured a line-up that included Robin Simon of Ultravox, and Barry Adamson who became a key member of Nick Cave’s Bad Seeds before launching a critically praised solo career. Magazine's combination of punk rock's nervous energy and art rock's experimentalism pushed the boundaries of music. Little wonder that this top postpunk group has been cited the by today's top post-rock group, Radiohead, as an influence, with Radiohead even paying tribute by performing Magazine's "Shot By Both Sides" during their Kid-A live shows. But Magazine's influence doesn't stop there. UFO's Obsession was to be their last studio record with star guitarist Michael Schenker. It did indeed contain lots of prime metal cuts, but some of the material ultimately fell flat. "Only You Can Rock Me" kicks off the album with a fun and carefree feel, while the funky "Pack It Up (And Go)" contains some John Bonham - like drumming courtesy of Andy Parker. The opening momentum is carried on through the slow Zeppelin groove of "Ain’t No Baby," but soon the band hits the skids. The group takes a crack at a power ballad, and "Hot 'N' Ready" & "One More for the Rodeo," both anchored by Pete Way's ultra-simplistic single-note basslines. But the album eventually gets back on track with the melodic rock of "Cherry" and "You Don’t Fool Me," the latter containing some tasty, fiery guitar solos. UFO hinted at their talents with releases such as Obsession and Lights Out, but it was their next release, the live Strangers in the Night, where it all came together for them.

Lights Out is probably the best studio document of what elevated UFO above the '70s hard rock fray. Within a Euro-blues framework, the classic lineup that lasted from Phenomenon through Strangers in the Night incorporated challenging dynamics, epic balladry, and a more than occasional sensitivity. On Lights Out, all three of these traits come together in powerful fashion, most notably on the space rocker-cum-ballad "Love to Love," where a ridiculously heavy intro gives way to flourishing poetics. "Gettin' Ready" and an oddball Love cover, "Alone Again Or," also showcase the band's sensitive ambiguities, never compromising the group's overarching hard edge. Not enough can be said either about UFO's standout individual performances, particularly Phil Mogg's street level vocals, which no doubt greatly influenced Joe Elliot and Paul Dianno. Then, of course, there's the matter of Michael Schenker's deservedly lauded lead guitar. Expressive and bluesy with a tone nearing perfection, even the more pedestrian tunes are made worthwhile due to a Schenker solo. Lights Out holds up well; its subtleties are worth mentioning because the band always make it a point to rock hard and the playing is always on. Almost completely overlooked stateside, Lights Out is a lost gem.

Unfortunately, this concert album is often overlooked when discussions of the great live rock albums of the '70s arise. UFO's Strangers in the Night deserves to be right up there with Kiss' Alive! and Thin Lizzy's Live and Dangerous, based on the excitement the group and its audience generates and due to the quality of the hard rock compositions. This is a band at its peak, with its prime lineup (led by German guitar-monger Michael Schenker) and all of its best songs. The group paces itself at the beginning, opting for some lesser material, but begins to hit a stride on the early track "Doctor Doctor." "Mother Mary" and "This Kids" combine all the elements of Led Zeppelin's best rock (concise riffs, mammoth drumming, etc.), while the introduction to "Love to Love" displays the talent of the instrumentalists. "Lights Out" is probably the band's best-known song, while the guitar solo-soaked "Rock Bottom" was an oft-requested fan favorite. UFO closes their set with the let-the-good-times-roll singalong "Too Hot to Handle" and the then-state-of-the-art heavy metal of "Let It Roll." A long-lost hard rock classic.

By the time Nadir's Big Chance was recorded, Van der Graaf had made the decision to reform (for Godbluff). Hammill tried to steer well clear of Van der Graaf territory, creating an album that is said to have helped glavanize the burgeoning punk generation, including John Lydon (Public Image Ltd.) who cites Hammill as one of his inspirations. This 1975 album has been digitally remastered with Hammill's participation and includes expanded liner notes. "Representing a stylistic left turn for Peter Hammill, this raucous, messy, rock platter was often cited as an influence by the first wave of punks in England. While essentially proving himself incapable of writing three-minute, three-chord rock & roll numbers, Hammill (taking on the guise of Rikki Nadir, i.e. dumb garage rocker) lays into his guitar with a vengeance, screaming out lyrics that are often unintelligible (the album did not come with a lyric sheet; this was the first Hammill album ever to make the listener depend upon the recording), while Guy Evans, Nic Potter, David Jackson and Hugh Banton thrash along behind him. During the early '70s, Lindisfarne was one of the hottest folk-based rock bands in England with chart placements on two of their albums that rivaled Jethro Tull and had them proclaimed one of the most important groups of the decade. With a sound that mixed plaintive folk-like melodies, earthy but well-sung harmonies, and acoustic and electric textures, the group was signed to Tony Stratten-Smith's Charisma Records, England's premiere progressive rock label, in 1970. They released their first album, Nicely Out of Tune, that same year. Their debut album captured the group's best attributes, a rollicking, upbeat, optimistic collection of hippie-folk music, somewhere midway between Fairport Convention and the early Grateful Dead, with a peculiarly urban, English working-class ambience. Founder and frontman Alan Hull was referred to in the UK press as the most important new songwriter since Bob Dylan and Lindisfarne was saddled with the designation as "the 1970s Beatles." Their second album, Fog on the Tyne, released in 1971, marked their commercial breakthrough - a collection of earthy, folk-type pub songs, the album entered the British charts in October of the year and began a slow climb into the middle reaches. In February of 1972, however, the group's label belatedly issued a single from the album, "Meet Me on the Corner." That record was #5 on the charts the following month while Fog on the Tyne suddently rose to the #1 spot. The Best of collection features their best known hits including "Fog on the Tyne," "Meet Me on the Corner," "Lady Eleanor" and All Fall Down."

For Five Miles Out, Oldfield drew his inspiration from a harrowing, near-death incident while piloting an airplane above the Pyrenees mountain range in Spain. Paddy Maloney, the leader of The Chieftans joins Oldfield on "Taurus II" the album's extended track. Vocalist Maggie Reilly sings Oldfield's best known pop composition "Family Man," which later became a Top Ten US hit for Daryl Hall and John Oates when they recorded it a year later.

Following on from the 2005 album 'Present,' Van Der Graaf Generator have put together a brand new album titled 'Trisector.' Van Der Graaf Generator now a stripped-down trio of members Hugh Banton (organ), Guy Evans (drums) and Peter Hammill (vox, guitar, piano), made a storming return to live performance in the spring of 2007. The band started recording their new album in July 2007 and after a period of mixing and overdubbing 'Trisector' is now ready for release. There are nine pieces on the album, one of them instrumental. Unusually for VDGG, only one of these is more than ten minutes long - indeed, five come in at under five minutes. There are, of course, passages of great complexity but there's also a confidence about the group which allows them to leave some simple things as they are. These are songs which dictate their own terms, often with a healthy dose of gallows humour, always with a measure of invention.
