Weather Report/Heavy Weather ....SACD $27.99

Weather Report/Heavy Weather ....SACD $27.99

"An all-time classic...Zawinul, Pastorius and Shorter at their zenith!"   Heavy Weather remains the touchstone - and easily the best-selling album by the pioneering jazz-rock fusion band Weather Report.  Formed in 1971 and continuing until 1986, the group's creative axis was keyboardist/composer Joe Zawinul and saxophonist/composer Wayne Shorter.  Borrowing tinges of earthtones from Cannonball Adderley's sanctified small groups of the 1960s and watercolors from the 1969 Miles Davis album In a Silent Way, Weather Report's musical palette could be as unpredictable and changeable as a New England spring, and as electrifying as a sudden thunderstorm.   Recorded in 1977, Heavy Weather added dramatic new tonal colors, from Zawinul's electronics to the innovative fretless electric bass pulsations of Jaco Pastorius. The music ranged from Zawinul's catchy crossover hit single "Birdland" to his haunting tone poem "A Remark You Made," and from Shorter's stately "Harlequin" to the rocking undertow of Pastorius' "Teen Town."

Santana/Lotus ....double SACD $35.99

Santana/Lotus ....double SACD $35.99

"...one of the greatest live albums ever recorded and one of the supreme achievements in guitar playing."  Lotus is a 1974 live album by Santana, recorded at the Osaka Koseinenkin Hall, Osaka, Japan in 1973. It was originally released in 1974 as a triple vinyl LP in Japan only. The first U.S. release was in 1991 as a 2-CD set. It features the "New Santana Band" and combines that group's jazz and spiritual influences. Some of the band's biggest hits are performed, such as "Black Magic Woman" and "Oye Como Va," but it is the extended, intense instrumentals that are the order of the day such as the breathtaking "Incident at Neshabur," "Every Step of the Way," and "Toussaint L'Overture."   Carlos' superpowered guitar is mesmerizing, the entire atmosphere is otherworldly, beautiful, modern jazzy and most of all, electrifying. His guitar tone is perfect, each solo has a central rhythmic and melodic structure that was used to express in a moment what can never be repeated. The greatness of Lotus is its ability to take all of Carlos' beautiful melodies and expand them each into a whole new creation.  Santana fans know there are "several different Santanas." This was the MILES Santana, the COLTRANE Santana. This is scary and amazing music played with so much mind-numbing passion. Carlos' guitar speaks notes on this recording that are nothing short of amazing. He manages to imbue a vibration that cuts right through your soul. Even on the familiar hits, the jazz fusion makes its way into the notes and Carlos delivers a new message. Lotus is basically Carlos Santana's "A Love Supreme." This was the top of Santana's spiritual-fusion era. Lotus is the Live Santana album that gives other Live albums a bad name. Amazing, breathtaking, emotional, spiritual...and it rocks!  Mastered by Steve Hoffman and Stephen Marsh at Marsh Mastering.  SACD Authoring: Stephen Marsh at Marsh Mastering

Spirit/Spirit ....SACD $27.99

spirit.jpg (14819 bytes)

Spirit's 1968 debut album spent more than six months on the Billboard album charts and received heavy airplay on underground FM radio. Their music was part of the core, essence, and heartbeat of the hippie, psychedelic, counter culture movement. The album is timeless... as fresh today as when it first appeared.  The band could play more styles than almost any other group. On "Spirit" they unveiled a melange of rock, jazz, blues, folk-rock, and even a bit classical and Indian music. Guitar prodigy Randy California is a clear standout, but the other band members are superb as well: John Locke's shimmering keyboards, Mark Andes' subsonic wall of bass, and Ed Cassidy's precision drumming. Big credit has to go to lead singer Jay Ferguson, whose phrasing is always just right with a wonderful spontaneous feel. The Marty Paich string arrangements are sublime.

Spirit/The Family that Plays Together ....SACD $27.99

Spirit/The Family that Plays Together ....SACD $27.99

"Every song is a riveting study in music without barriers."  Includes the hit, "I Got a Line on You" and FIVE bonus tracks!  The Family that Plays Together was released in December 1968. On this, the second Spirit album, the group put all of the elements together that made them the legendary band that they were. The Family that Plays Together displays the band's ability to play beyond the genre of psychedelic rock. jazz, rock & roll, and even classical elements combined to create one of the cleanest, most tasteful syntheses of its day. The album's hit single, "I Got a Line on You," boasts especially strong harmonies as well as one of the greatest rock riffs of the period.  Ed Cassidy's Spirit songs covered about every subject under the sun. The first half of the recording is a wonderful and seamless suite, and taken in its entirety, one of the greatest sides on Los Angeles rock. The SACD includes some excellent bonus tracks. "So Little to Say" is one of Jay Ferguson's finest compositions ever, and the jazz-inspired instrumentals such as "Fog" and "Space Chile" showcase pianist John Locke as one of the most inspired and lyrical players in the rock idiom. Tracks such as "It Shall Be" and "Silky Sam" demonstrate the ease with which the ensemble can incorporate jazz into their idiosyncratic form of rock, while "Jewish" and "Aren't You Glad" show the band's competence in exploiting both world music and jam rock.  The album's title was inspired by the stepson-stepfather relationship between guitarist Randy California and percussionist Ed Cassidy.  All in all, a classic album and a true landmark.

Blue Cheer/Vincebus Eruptum ....SACD $27.99

Blue Cheer/Vincebus Eruptum ....SACD $27.99

Rock & Roll had grown louder by leaps and bounds during the '60s, but when Blue Cheer emerged from San Francisco onto the national rock scene in 1968 with their debut album, "Vincebus Eruptum," they crossed a line which most musicians and fans hadn't even thought to draw yet. The album features a heavy, thunderous blues sound, which would later be known as heavy metal. It also contains elements of acid rock, grunge, experimental rock, blues rock, stoner rock, and garage rock. A commercial and critical success, "Vincebus Eruptum" peaked at #11 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart and spawned the top-20 hit cover of Eddie Cochran's "Summertime Blues."  No band could summon so much thunder with just three people. "Vincebus Eruptum" is still the Blue Cheer's album to own. It was their simplest and most forceful musical statement.

Grand Funk/All the Girls in the World Beware!!! ....SACD  $27.99

Grand Funk/All the Girls in the World Beware!!! ....SACD $27.99

A pop/rock mainstream hit album... includes the hits "Some Kind of Wonderful" and "Bad Time."  All the Girls in the World Beware!!! is Grand Funk Railroad's ninth studio album.  First there was the heavy metal power trio, then the powerful hard rock quartet and after years of loud, in-your-face rock albums and tours, Mark Farner, Don Brewer, Mel Schacher and Craig Frost went into the studio and made an album that has a lot more R&B combined with good ol' rock and roll and way ahead of its time.  The album's combination of high-gloss production and the band's energy resulted in a few impressive hits: "Some Kind of Wonderful" is an exuberant, organ-drenched soul song that highlights the group's strong harmonies while "Bad Time" mixes a delicate, string-laden melody with a pulsing beat from the rhythm section to create a one-of-a-kind power ballad.  All the Girls in the World Beware!!! has many inventive moments. The seven-minute "Good & Evil" is fascinating for Brewer's strange, processed lead vocal. "Look at Granny Run Run" is sheer, goofy fun and "Memories" is a serious stab at out-and-out balladry.  The album's artwork included taking the faces of the band members and manipulating them onto the bodies of famous body builders Arnold Schwarzenegger and Franco Columbo. The center spread art is a Neal Adams illustration of the buffed band surrounded by a crowd of female fans.

America/America ....Hybrid SACD $25.99

America/America ....Hybrid SACD $25.99

"America"was America's debut album released in 1971. The album featured two hit singles "A Horse With No Name" and "I Need You" along with the much played "Sandman" and "Three Roses." The album was a success worldwide. America featured exquisite harmonies with subtle acoustics, which would become America's trademark. This was the album that set the tone for all future America albums.   Dewey Bunnell, Gary Beckley and Dan Peek - each an accomplished vocalist and guitar player - first met in England in 1967 while stationed with their parents at a U.S. Air Force base. They soon began seriously writing and performing together, eventually taking the name of a homeland they hardly knew.  America quickly gained a reputation for incisive, evocative songwriting and appealing performances built around their distinctive three-part harmonies.  The album is produced by Ian Samwell with Jeff Dexter and America, (and engineered by Ken Scott).

Jon Anderson/Olias of Sunhillow ....Hybrid SACD $32.99

Jon Anderson/Olias of Sunhillow ....Hybrid SACD $32.99

"This album is not just good Progressive music, it's in a class by itself...a Prog masterpiece!"
"The joy in this music is undeniable...Few works of modern music have found such a powerful communion between form and content."

Jon Anderson's Olias Of Sunhillow was released in the summer of 1976 and is one of his most acclaimed solo works. It's one of five solo albums released by members of Yes around that time and one of the most successful of those solo efforts, reaching No. 8 in the UK charts and breaking into the US Top 50.  The music is written and performed almost entirely by Anderson using synthesizers, tape loops, ethnic instruments, sound effects and different voices. Some of the synthesizer sounds ring of those found on contemporary Vangelis pieces with whom Jon had just recorded the year before. He emphasizes his interest in Celtic and Central Asian musical ideas much more here than before and creates a rich, evocative world.  Anderson has stated the album's concept was inspired by Roger Dean's 1972 Yes "Fragile" cover art as well as works by J.R.R. Tolkien. It's all as detailed and rich as any fantasy novel. It is a progressive rock concept album which tells the story of an alien race and their journey to a new world, an interstellar exodus from Sunhillow on a spaceship designed by the architect, Olias.  Olias glides along seamlessly from one piece to another, showcasing Anderson's uncommon gifts for melody and harmony as well as for songwriting. Together with arrangements that veer from the rustic to sci-fi, the music appears to travel through Earth and Space, incarnating the elements of the material and ethereal worlds. The scope of the music is cinematic, freely pursuing concepts to every corner of its vision and fashioning an experience that is as breathtaking for its range as it is for its depth.  The packaging features a series of artworks by the artist David Fairbrother Roe. "Olias of Sunhillow" is a "must have" for any Yes fan!

Blood Sweat & Tears/Blood Sweat & Tears ....Hybrid SACD $31.99

Hybrid Quad 4.0 Multichannel SACD.  With the 1969 release of their self-titled second album, Blood Sweat & Tears - now with lead vocalist David Clayton-Thomas - catapulted onto the charts with their smash hits, "You've Made Me So Very Happy," "And When I Die" and the anthemic "Spinning Wheel."   Blending their many diverse styles into an altogether new pop sound, the record established Blood, Sweat & Tears as one of the most dynamic bands of their time. In 1970 the band won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year.

Blood Sweat & Tears/Child Is Father to the Man ....Hybrid SACD $29.99

Blood Sweat & Tears/Child Is Father to the Man ....Hybrid SACD $29.99

In 5.1 Surround Sound!  Exploding onto the scene as a band determined only to expand the boundaries of popular music, Blood Sweat & Tears immediately made their mark as virtuoso players with an important vision and statement. Calling on rock, R&B, jazz and even classical influences, the band, led by Al Kooper, made what remains one of the truly inspired, groundbreaking records of the late '60s.  The album introduced the idea of the big band to rock and roll and paved the way for such groups as Chicago. Child Is Father to the Man peaked at #47 on Billboard's chart. "I Love You More than You'll Ever Know" and "I Can't Quit Her" generated airplay on progressive rock radio.  This is the sound of a group of virtuosos enjoying itself in the newly open possibilities of pop music... the eclectic post-Sgt. Pepper era, a time when you could borrow styles from Greenwich Village contemporary folk to San Francisco acid rock and mix them into what seemed to have the potential to become a new American musical form.   Produced by John Simon; multi-channel recording produced by Al Kooper; multi-channel SACD 5.1 mix: Al Kooper at The Magic Shop NYC; multichannel SACD 5.1 mastering: Bob Ludwig at Gateway Mastering Studios; Stereo CD and SACD mastering: Steve Hoffman at Stephen Marsh Mastering .

Mike Bloomfield-Al Kooper-Steve Stills/Super Session ....Hybrid SACD $31.99

Mike Bloomfield-Al Kooper-Steve Stills/Super Session ....Hybrid SACD $31.99

Al Kooper was an A&R executive with Columbia Records in the early 1960's after leaving the group Blood Sweat & Tears. The Super Session album was conceived as a jam session with Kooper on keyboards and former Paul Butterfield Blues Band member Mike Bloomfield on lead guitar along with veteran studio musician and Wrecking Crew member "Fast" Eddie Hoh on drums and Barry Goldberg, also on keyboards. Bloomfield was available during the first day of recording for Side 1 (Tracks 1-5) of the LP. For the second day of recording, Kooper brought in former Buffalo Springfield guitarist Stephen Stills to perform on the music that became Side 2 (Tracks 6-9) of the LP. Recorded on a shoestring budget over a 2-day period in Los Angeles, Super Session went on to become a rock classic and earned the trio a gold record for sales of over one million copies.   The package includes new liner notes written by Al Kooper that tells the story of the Super Session album and the new 5.1 Multichannel mix. The 5.1 mix by Al Kooper with mastering by Bob Ludwig was never released and yet it has acquired some fame from industry insiders familiar with the Multichannel mix with comments like "excellent" and "it deserves to be heard."  The new mastering of the stereo tracks for new SACD Stereo and CD Stereo audio are by mastering engineer Steve Hoffman.

The Butterfield Blues Band/East-West ....Hybrid SACD $25.99

The Butterfield Blues Band/East-West ....Hybrid SACD $25.99

The Butterfield Blues Band had already shown on their first album that they had a definite command of the Chicago blues idiom. On East-West they open up and branch out without losing the edge and drive of their first recording.  East-West represented a watershed for pop music...more maturity, better musicianship, more exploration, more successful blending of other genres.  East-West stretches the boundaries of the blues, above any other extended piece of the mid sixties, a rock band finally achieved a version of the musical freedom that free jazz had found a few years earlier. It can also be heard as part of what sparked the West Coast's rock revolution, in which song structures with extended improvisation became commonplace.

In 1966 when this album debuted, it was nothing less than astonishing. A mixed-race band? A white guy singing blues? A Jewish kid and a southern farmboy sounding like Robert Johnson on guitars? The album was recorded at the famed Chess Studios in Chicago. It peaked at #65 on the Billboard pop albums chart. This album features traditional blues covers and the guitar work of Mike Bloomfield and Elvin Bishop. The edge this band had was it had people from Chicago, the home of urban blues, who had grown up and played with all the greats. East-West combines the emotion and power of the blues along with the swing and instrumental dexterity of a great jazz band. The two centerpieces of the album, the instrumentals "Work Song" written by jazz great Nat Adderly, and the title cut "East-West" are recognized by many as the first recorded versions of jazz-rock fusion put to vinyl.  "One of the greatest guitar albums of all time...A breath taking performance from beginning to end."  "One of the essential albums everyone must own...an American milestone recording."

The Paul Butterfield Blues Band/The Paul Butterfield Blues Band ....Hybrid SACD $25.99

The Paul Butterfield Blues Band/The Paul Butterfield Blues Band ....Hybrid SACD $25.99

In the early sixties, the prevailing wisdom was that the blues was a music based on the shared experience of African Americans and that any attempt by a "Caucasian" to play the blues would pale in comparison. In 1965, Paul Butterfield broke that color barrier. The Butterfield Blues Band debut album was released in 1965 and became an instant favorite among blues aficionados. Rolling Stone Magazine ranks the Butterfield Blues Band one of the 500 greatest albums of all time. Downbeat Magazine has the album listed as number 11 of the greatest blues album of all time.  Butterfield teamed-up with guitarists Elvin Bishop and Mike Bloomfield, added Mark Naftalin on organ and hijacked Jerome Arnold on bass and Sam Lay on drums from Howlin' Wolf's band. The music that pours from this album is unfiltered, clamored, and let loose, like blues music is supposed to be and played with an intensity and pure passion in every bent note. In front of all these instruments is Butterfield's harmonica, beautifully dictating a mood and a genuine feel that set the standard for harmonica blowing vocalists.  The album features a mix of folk, rock, psychedelia, and even Indian classical music played over an embedded base of good old Chicago blues. Each song captures the essence of Chicago blues in a different way, from the back-alley feel of "Born in Chicago" to the melting ease of Willie Dixon's "Mellow Down Easy" to the authentic devotion that emanates from Bishop and Butterfield's "Our Love Is Drifting." "Shake Your Money Maker," "Blues With a Feeling," and "I Got My Mojo Working" (with Lay on vocals) are all equally moving pieces.  The Paul Butterfield Blues Band is a Chicago Blues Masterpiece and the foundation of any great music collection.

Wendy Carlos/Disney's Tron - Original Soundtrack ....double vinyl LP $51.99

Wendy Carlos/Disney's Tron - Original Soundtrack ....double vinyl LP $51.99

Audio Fidelity is proud to announce the release of Disney's TRON Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. The 1982 film score was composed, performed and produced by the pioneer electronic musician Wendy Carlos.  The Audio Fidelity release will contain two 180g translucent blue vinyl records packaged in a distinctive gatefold jacket. The album includes colorful photos from the popular cult film and generous and informative liner notes written by the composer as well as music critic, Michael Fremer who, at the time, served as the film's music supervisor. Fremer also oversaw the Audio Fidelity mastering by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio working with the original master tape source for the first time since the initial release.  Carlos composed an electronic score which was later overlapped with symphonic backgrounds by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the U.C.L.A. Chorus. The result is impressive and dynamic and seamlessly fuses organic and electronic music.  The multi-Grammy award winning Wendy Carlos best-known for her popular "Switched on Bach," series of albums also composed and performed on the soundtracks of two Stanley Kubrick cinema masterpieces, "A Clockwork Orange" and "The Shining."  The TRON album includes three bonus tracks along with two songs ("Only Solutions" and the rock guitar-drive instrumental, "1990's Theme") provided by Journey, one of America's best-selling bands.

Billy Cobham/Spectrum ....Hybrid SACD $27.99

Billy Cobham/Spectrum ....Hybrid SACD $27.99

4.0 Multichannel - The 1970s fusion era allowed musicians to indulge their taste for different genres.  In the aptly titled "Spectrum," Billy Cobham revealed his interest in, and aptitude for, rock, jazz and funk, as well as considerable compositional skills. Cobham's tunes set fire to a stunningly tight quartet primarily featuring keyboardist Jan Hammer, guitarist Tommy Bolin, and electric bassist Lee Sklar.   Two tracks include Joe Farrell on flute and soprano and trumpeter Jimmy Owens with guitarist John Tropea, Hammer, bassist Ron Carter, and Ray Barretto on congas.   Cobham was fresh off his success with the Mahavishnu Orchestra when he recorded this debut album. The mood of this session is very versatile, containing moments of both delicacy and aggressiveness. The scowling, scurrying, skirmishing performance by the late rock-guitar ace, Tommy Bolin (who would later join Deep Purple), is particularly memorable. He merges beautifully with Cobham's Mahavishnu bandmate, Jan Hammer.  Over 40 years after "Spectrum" was recorded, there is still a broad interest in "funk jazz" and "fusion" especially now that digital sampling has exploded into the music world and musicians are trying to create music that is both danceable and sonically interesting.  "Spectrum" reached #1 on the Billboard Jazz Album chart as well as crossing-over to the Top 200.

Alice Cooper/Muscle of Love ....Hybrid Multi-Channel SACD $27.99

Alice Cooper/Muscle of Love ....Hybrid Multi-Channel SACD $27.99

Muscle of Love is the seventh studio album by Alice Cooper and it was the last album to feature the entire original band, and it was a true grand finale at that.  Cooper stated in an interview at the time that the album marked a return to a basic rock sound. "It's not complicated in any sense...It's very basic rock & roll throughout."  The two best-known tracks are undoubtedly the Top 20 anthem "Teenage Lament '74," which features none other than Liza Minnelli, Ronnie Spector, Labelle and the Pointer Sisters on backing vocals, and the rollicking title track. But other tracks are just as good - the Led Zep-stomping opener, "Big Apple Dreamin' (Hippo)," the gentle "Hard Hearted Alice" (a precursor to Cooper's future ballad-oriented direction), the raging "Working Up a Sweat," and "Man with the Golden Gun."  The 1973 release climbed to #10 on the Billboard 200 and as Alice stated the recording was a return to the band's more hard rock roots complete with the prog-rock/heavy metal workouts synonymous with the Alice Cooper legacy.  INCLUDES: Miniature replica of the Institute of Nude Wrestling book cover

Bob Dylan/Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. 2 ....double Hybrid SACD $56.99

Bob Dylan/Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. 2 ....double Hybrid SACD $56.99

"...an accurate picture of the depth and breadth of Dylan's talents...possibly the best compilation available by any artist."  Bob Dylan agreed to release a second "greatest hits" compilation, provided he could compile it himself, issue it as a double album, and include several older compositions which he had written but never issued. Dylan's first Greatest Hits collection included his most popular songs from the '60s, while this volume gathers most of the rest. "Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Volume II" is close to perfection. Five of the cuts are previously uncollected or unreleased. Three of them have been established as indubitable classics by other artists, and the other two begin and end the album.  There are sentimental romantic ballads ("Lay Lady Lay," "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You") and wordy rants ("Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues," "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue"). There are angry political rants ("Maggie's Farm," "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall") and spiritually uplifting songs ("I Shall Be Released"). Dylan shows both his folkie side and his rock and roll side and he's never been in better voice.   While the double SACD does contain several genuine hits, it is largely comprised of album tracks that became classics, either through Dylan's own version or through covers that were big hits for other artists, including "All I Really Want to Do" (The Byrds), "All Along the Watchtower" (Jimi Hendrix) and "The Mighty Quinn" (Manfred Mann), but nearly all of Dylan's versions remain definitive.   The big draw, however, are the previously unavailable tracks unique to this edition: "Watching The River Flow," "When I Paint My Masterpiece," and "Tomorrow Is A Long Time" don't appear anywhere else and "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere" and "Down In The Flood" are different takes than heard on "The Basement Tapes."  The songs flow nicely almost exclusively alternating between electric and acoustic. Some are obvious choices, others unexpected pleasures.

The Guess Who/The Best of the Guess Who ....Hybrid SACD $31.99

The Guess Who/The Best of the Guess Who ....Hybrid SACD $31.99

Hybrid Quad 4.0 Multichannel SACD.  The Guess Who were pure rockers. They didn't have street cred; they didn't look like stars; and they were't considered "cool" by the ultra hip and snooty underground FM rock crowd.  But over the course of their career, The Guess Who created some of the most transcendent and electifying pop music of the Seventies. The Guess Who stubbornly flew in the face of fashion, trends, and the flourishing progressive rock movement, and built and enduring body of work that illuminates their status as immensely gifted pop rock practitioners.  Though influenced by the British Invasion, The Guess Who were purely Canadian rockers. The band scored a string of Top Ten hits in the late '60s and early '70s, including the psychedelic-romantic smash "These Eyes" and riff-rocking anthem "American Woman," "Laughing," "Undun," "No Time" and "No Sugar Tonight.."  A huge success in the States, the band performed at President Nixon's inaugural ball (with the acerbic "American Woman" conspicuously omitted from the set list). Burton Cummings' throaty baritone vocals and guitarist Randy Bachman's theatrical riffs gave the band their versatile sound - and their rocking classics sound as vital today as they did when there were first released.

Sarah McLachlan/Touch ....Hybrid SACD $31.99

Sarah McLachlan/Touch ....Hybrid SACD $31.99

"Touch" is the 1988 debut album by Sarah McLachlan. The album showcases a distinctive sound combining the elements of folk and progressive rock and sets the stage for such memorable tracks as "Out of the Shadows," "Strange World," and "Trust." This is the album that first introduced Sarah to the world.   Only 19 at the time, McLachlan had years to go before she would become the seductive songstress and sensitive balladeer and yet she was already showing a sense of maturity.  Sarah's classical training and skilled playing ability shines through on this release. This is an impressive first effort, McLachlan's pristine vocals and intricate guitar work yield several memorable tracks, including the opening "Out of the Shadows" and the enchanting "Strange World." Her youthful romanticism is perhaps captured best in "Trust," a catchy tune that is embellished with male vocals, sparkling keyboards, bongos, and distant electric-guitar licks.  Other tracks, especially "Vox" and "Steaming," are beautiful tracks that have a light sense of yearning that she would later develop into the sensual crooning of her mid '90s work. And "Ben's Song," a piano ballad, would go on to be included in her live shows.  Touch was widely popular at alternative radio, vastly different from the material that would follow and serves as an interesting look back at the first efforts of a young singer, a blossoming talent that was in the early stages of blooming. Touch is a glorious surprise.

Renaissance/Scheherazade and Other Stories ....Hybrid SACD $25.99

Renaissance/Scheherazade and Other Stories ....Hybrid SACD $25.99

1975's "Scheherazade And Other Stories" is a beautifully crafted album, expertly sung and played by Renaissance. The recording is filled with lush, orchestral progressive pop-rock and considered by many music critics to be their best album.   Renaissance is a band that went through various permutations, the best known being the line up featured here and they shine throughout the album: Annie Haslam's soaring, pure vocals, John Tout's considerable piano prowess, Jon Camp's imaginative bass, Michael Dunford on guitar and Terence Sullivan on drums.  There are only four pieces on the album: "A Trip To The Fair" is a heavenly 11-minute dreamscape. "The Vultures Fly High" is a short but very effective prog-rocker. "Ocean Gypsy" is a gorgeous song, and one of the band's all-time classics. And then, of course, there's the 25-minute, nine-part epic, "Song Of Scheherazade," one of the highlights of rock history featuring the prog icon's unique interpretation of the Scheherazade legend accompanied by the London Symphony Orchestra and a chorus.  Aficionados of classical music will also appreciate the album.  Produced by Renaissance, mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio.

Rush/Counterparts ....Hybrid SACD $29.99

Rush/Counterparts ....Hybrid SACD $29.99

Rush's 1993 release, Counterparts is the band's fifteenth studio album and their highest charting album in the US, peaking at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. With the electronic era ending the band reunited with producer, Peter Collins and this album fully embraced the guitar as the main driver behind the music. Counterparts features some of Alex Lifeson's most inspired guitar playing. Geddy Lee's distinctive bass moved into a more traditional rock and roll sounding natural, smooth and powerful and his confidence as a vocalist allows him full control over his range. Neil Peart's groove oriented style drumming continued his transition from the progressive '70s and flashy '80s.  The primary focus of Counterparts' lyrics feature dark and emotional themes mainly about relationships between men and women and Neil Peart pulls it off with some of the best writing of his career. The classic, pure hard rock "Cold Fire" is one of the finest relationship songs he has ever written with line after line of great dialogue between the two main characters in the song. Some songs are heavy such as "Animate" and the #1 Mainstream Rock track, "Stick it Out." Other highlights include the mostly acoustic hit "Nobody's Hero" which provides the album's most gripping moment with an impassioned plea for HIV consciousness and understanding - "Between The Sun And Moon," "The Speed Of Love" and "Double Agent" with Geddy Lee's strange spoken word style and the funky "Leave That Thing Alone" that earned a Grammy nomination for "Best Instrumental."  Experimentation abounds on this fun album, with a lot of varied, intriguing, and successful material making it a worthy addition to any Rush collection.

Rush/Hemispheres ....Hybrid SACD $31.99

Rush/Hemispheres ....Hybrid SACD $31.99

Hemispheres is the sixth studio album by Rush. In many ways, it was the final album in a major chapter of Rush's career. The 1978 release was their last release of the '70s and their last LP that's unambiguously prog. Hemispheres was also the final album in Rush's grandiose period, which included "2112" and "A Farewell To Kings." Hemispheres has a brilliant concept to it, the brain hemispheres, reason and emotion, its complicated and smart - the music here is simply incredible, not your typical rock band and totally Rush.  The album contains examples of Rush's adherence to progressive rock standards including the use of daring, multi-movement song structures, complex rhythms and time signatures, and flexible guitar solos. Hemispheres contains a single, epic song broken into chapters, one of which is the tremendous virtuoso instrumental, "La Villa Strangiato." This instrumental remains one of the most complicated and well composed songs that Rush has ever produced.  The musicianship is nearly flawless and awe-inspiring, as the band is playing orchestral music - only in a hard rock/metal context. Neal Peart's one-of-a-kind drumming, Alex Lifeson's blindingly sharp guitar and Geddy Lee's amazing voice, these guys play their rock like no other band.  Rush is without question one of the most inventive and compelling groups in rock history, equally famed for both its virtuoso musicianship and provocative songwriting.  "#8 Favorite Prog Rock Album of All Time" - Rolling Stone Magazine-Readers' Poll

Rush/Presto ....Hybrid SACD $31.99

Rush/Presto ....Hybrid SACD $31.99

Rush were never a band known to play the same sort of thing for any extended period, they often pushed the boundaries of rock and their formidable list of albums helped to bring prog to a wider audience. By 1989 a change was inevitable and with their 13th studio album, Presto, it was a change for the good. Presto marked the beginning of a transition period, moving away from a sound dominated by synthesizers and toward more traditional rock instrumentation. The synths were toned back while the guitars were brought up to a reasonable level allowing the emphasis to return to the rhythm instruments, resurrecting the groove that Rush maintains so very well.  Geddy Lee and Neal Peart are in good form, but Alex Lifeson is the real story, he can be heard in grand force and even pulls out the acoustic guitar. Lifeson's leads in "Superconductor" are brilliant, Geddy Lee does great solo work on "Show Don't Tell" and Peart's percussion on "Scars" features a complex tribal rhythm drum pattern in which both acoustic and electronic drums are utilized - a synthesis of the two that's accessible without compromising. Each of these tracks, along with "The Pass," reached the top of the Album Rock Tracks charts with "Show Don't Tell" hitting #1. Presto climbed to #16 on the Billboard Top 200 album chart.  Rush made a stab at greatness with Presto and Rupert Hine's deft production had much to do with its success.  Produced by Rupert Hine, mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio.

Styx/Paradise Theater ....Hybrid SACD $31.99

Styx/Paradise Theater ....Hybrid SACD $31.99

Styx's 10th album, the 1981 release, Paradise Theater was the band's fourth consecutive triple-platinum album. A resounding success, Paradise Theater was their greatest commercial triumph and their only #1 album. It remains one of the best examples of the convergence between progressive rock and AOR which typified the arena rock sound of the top groups of the late-seventies and early-eighties such as Journey, REO Speedwagon, Cheap Trick and Kansas.  Styx was a great group of talented musicians - Dennis DeYoung, Tommy Shaw, James "JY" Young, Chuck Panozzo and John Panozzo. The album included three Billboard Hot 100 hits, "The Best of Times," "Nothing Ever Goes As Planned" and "Too Much Time on My Hands" considered among Tommy Shaw's finest singles ever. Another track, "Rockin' The Paradise" reached #8 on the Top Rock Track Chart.  The concept album is a fictional account of Chicago's Paradise Theatre from its opening to closing, used as a metaphor for America's changing times from the late 1970s into the 1980s.

Vangelis/Blade Runner ....Hybrid SACD $29.99                     Vangelis/Blade Runner O.S.T. (180+ Virgin Vinyl) ....vinyl LP $33.99

"..one of the most memorable and important soundtracks in movie history."   The Blade Runner soundtrack was composed by Vangelis for Ridley Scott's 1982 film considered one of the finest sci-fi movies ever made. It is mostly a dark, melodic combination of classical compositions and synthesizers which mirrors the futuristic film noir envisioned by Scott. The soundtrack holds legendary status and at the time was well-received by fans and critics including Best Original Score nominations for a BAFTA and Golden Globe yet, except for a few cuts, it was not released until 1994.  The movie remains a classic film with a long list of popular movie stars including Harrison Ford, Daryl Hannah, Rutger Hauer, Sean Young, and Edward James Olmos most of whom appear on this hybrid SACD in movie dialog samples mixed into the 12 tracks of nearly one hour of music. Vangelis makes each track flow into one another. The soundtrack features vocal contributions from Demis Roussos and the sax solo by Dick Morrissey on "Love Theme." The colorful 12-page booklet includes many stills from the film as does the gatefold jacket for the vinyl release. Blade Runner is a timeless classic on film and now on hybrid SACD and on 180g transparent red vinyl.  Mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio.

John Williams/Close Encounters of the Third Kind (OST) ....Hybrid SACD $27.99

John Williams/Close Encounters of the Third Kind (OST) ....Hybrid SACD $27.99

Close Encounters of the Third Kind is visionary director Steven Spielberg's now classic exhilarating 1977 science fiction film. The masterful score was composed, conducted and produced by John Williams. The soundtrack is a mixture of eerie suspense and tremendous emotive bombast, complete with hair-raising moments and the great big playful musical conversation between the mothership and the humans. Williams' "five-tone" motif for Close Encounters has become ingrained in popular culture (the five tones are used by scientists to communicate with the visiting spaceship as a mathematical language as well as being incorporated into the film's signature theme).  The album was a critical and commercial success, peaking at #17 on the US Billboard album chart and reaching #40 in the UK. John Williams won two Grammy Awards for his score (Best Original Film Score and Best Instrumental Composition). A disco version of the five-note motif, though not part of the original score, is included on the disc as a bonus track making this CD an essential acquisition for collectors and movie and music fans.

Yes/Close to the Edge ....Hybrid SACD $29.99

Yes/Close to the Edge ....Hybrid SACD $29.99

Close to the Edge is the fifth studio album by Yes. This 1972 recording set a trend for Yes of structuring an album around a single epic song. Here the centerpiece is the song "Close to the Edge." The album reached No. 4 on the UK Albums Chart and No. 3 on the U.S. Billboard 200 during a chart stay of 32 weeks.  Close to the Edge is pure progressive rock - thoughtful and intelligent compositions executed by the classic lineup of Chris Squire (bass, vocals); Rick Wakeman (mellotron, moog, Hammond organ, piano); Steve Howe (electric, acoustic guitars); Bill Bruford (drums and percussion); and Jon Anderson (vocals). All of the musicians in Yes are true virtuosos. The individual and group ensemble work on Close to the Edge is breathtakingly complex and the arrangements are incredible, everything flows flawlessly from one piece to the next.  There's a spiritual influence introduced by Jon Anderson, in the music and lyrics of all three tracks on Close to the Edge. Renewal and repetition are other main themes. The album works incredibly well as a complete work that fuses music, lyrics and Roger Dean's album cover art together in one seamless totality.  "Ranked No. 67 on the list of the 100 Greatest Guitar Albums of All Time." Yes/Going for the One ....Hybrid SACD $29.99

Yes/Going for the One ....Hybrid SACD $29.99

This is Yes at their very finest!  The music is splendid...soaring, lush, illuminating.  The band's return at the height of the punk rock movement was a successful one, with Going for the One topping the UK Album Chart for one week.  It peaked at number 8 on the US Billboard 200. The album spawned two singles; "Wonderous Stories" peaked at number 7 and "Going for the One" at number 24 in the UK singles chart.  Going for the One marked Rick Wakeman's return to the band and also a return to shorter song forms...after constructing epic tracks for the last few years, Yes felt inspired to scale things back a bit and recorded some of their most direct and concise material since Fragile. In many ways, this disc could be seen as the follow-up to Fragile. Its five tracks still retain mystical, abstract lyrical images, and the music is grand and melodic, the vocal harmonies perfectly balanced by the stinging guitar work of Steve Howe, Wakeman's keyboards, and the solid rhythms of Alan White and Chris Squire. The title track features Howe on steel guitar. "Turn of the Century" and the album's single, "Wonderous Stories," are lovely ballads the way only Yes can do them. "Parallels" is the album's big, pompous song, so well done that in later years the band opened concerts with it.  Wakeman also varied his sound by using the new polyphonic synthesizer the Polymoog and using church pipe organ on "Parallels" and the extended track, "Awaken." Wakeman's stately church organ, recorded at St. Martin's Church, Vevey, Switzerland, sets the tone for this "Roundabout"-ish track. The concluding "Awaken" is the album's nod to the extended suite. Jon Anderson and Squire are dead-on vocally.  Jon Anderson has said of the song "Awaken," "We had a hit record! I loved listening to 'Awaken,' at last we had created a Masterwork" and has indicated in some interviews that he considers it to be Yes's most complete composition.  Mastered for this SACD by Steve Hoffman at Stephen Marsh Mastering.
